In essence, what is the goodwill representative of a company?

For investors, this type of goodwill is known as “accounting goodwill” and plays a vital role in decision making during a merger or acquisition project.

Goodwill in the financial statements

Because goodwill is an elusive asset, it is recorded on the balance sheet as a noncurrent asset. A noncurrent asset is a long-term asset like fixed assets such as property, plant, and equipment. The goodwill entered in the books may not realise any cash profit in the future. Thus, a company’s valuation should be calculated using the book value method based on its total assets.

For example, if the company’s total assets are shown to be $1 billion on its balance sheet, and the goodwill value is $200 million, the net asset value is $800 million, and the net asset value per share is adjusted accordingly.

A vital conclusion that you can draw from this is that if it increases year on year, that does not mean that the company’s reputation in the market has improved. It only means that the company is involved in numerous take-overs and mergers.

In addition, a decline in goodwill does not necessarily mean that the company’s reputation has deteriorated from year to year. It just means that the corporation is gradually writing off the goodwill from its balance sheet.

Looking beyond the annual report

As we have established, goodwill is an intangible asset of a company that plays a phenomenal role in enhancing its earnings. It is a factor that gives a company an edge over the competition. It could be brand value, usability, product buying habits or customer loyalty. Goodwill reflects elements that you cannot measure. Hence, these are not a component of the company’s yearly report.

The value of such financial goodwill can be more than the equivalent of all company assets combined. Number crunching is essential, but the most critical factor in your investment decision is not a number. It is something that must be felt and analysed. New and seemingly revolutionary products in the market that make things easy for the masses are most commonly the multibaggers of the future. Some of today’s biggest companies, including Facebook and Amazon from the west, and Zomato, Paytm, and Zerodha from India, among others, are live examples of multi-baggers that rose from the space of easing public needs.

If you search in the estimates, you will not find the entire genuine commercial value there. Try to investigate a business with the potential of its intangible assets. Try to look for the channel of the company, the contentious influence it has over others. The annual report might state a company’s past and prospects, but it cannot ascertain its fate.

Things to keep in mind before investing in an IPO

Understand the business: Before beginning to invest, one must understand the nature of the business the company is in. The next step after understanding the business will be now to recognise the company’s growth opportunities and its capacity to capture the market share. An investor should avoid investing in IPOs if the business activities lack the clarity to an investor.

Recognise the risk: Risks are inevitable while trading. Understanding the risk associated with the company is an important factor that should be considered. The current market scenario, its competitors, quality of products and services, liabilities including the contingent ones should be thoroughly analysed to decode any potential risks associated with the company. Such details are available from the company prospectus.

Financial Health of the company: The financial health of the company should be assessed with its revenues and profits being consistent over the past few years. If the revenues and profits are showing an upward trajectory, then it is a green signal for investment. One should also check the valuations, since offer price can be undervalued, fairly valued, or overvalued depending on the industry parameters and profitability ratios.

Always read the DRHP: DRHP (Draft Red Herring Prospectus) is filed by a company to SEBI when it intends to raise funds from the company by selling shares of the investors. The prospectus elaborates how the company intends to use the money that will be raised, and the possible risks for investors. Thus, investors must go through the DRHP before investing in an IPO.

Study the strength and weaknesses: Investors can figure out the key positives of the company from the DRHP. One should try to find the company’s position in the industry in which it operates, it is positioning, and strategies. By reading this, one can find more about the company’s prospects.

The utilisation of the proceeds: An investor needs to check that how the funds from the IPO raised will be used. If the purpose of utilising the funds is to repay the debts, then the investment is not lucrative. But, if the purpose is to repay the debts and expand the business or utilise it for general corporate purposes then it shows that the funds will flow into the business making it a good share to invest.

Final word for investors

For investing in stocks, mutual funds, or IPO companies, investors first need to understand their financial goals. A wise investor should not make haste in investment decisions based on the market hype, publicity, and peer recommendation of someone else. Investors should do their research. If one can see future growth and potential in the company, then one should consider investing in its IPO.

You cannot open new places either in futures or in options if a trading ban is imposed.

Market-wide position limit (MWPL)

Market-wide position limit (MWPL) is a limit that shows the maximum number of unsettled option contracts for a derivative stock. Currently, the MWPL for Indian derivative stocks is 95%.

If the open interest of a share’s MWPL is greater than 95 per cent, the share is banned from trading in the futures and options market. Open interest is the final number of outstanding obligations held by market members at the end of each day. Open interest measures the fundamental level of activity in the futures market.

The concept of market-wide position limit is applied to securities in the futures and options (F&O) section. Every month, the stock exchange publishes data for MWPL of each security in the F&O section. Index derivatives are not subjected to the MWPL.

The MWPL of securities should be:

Less than (or equal to) 20 per cent of the free float stock, and

Thirty times the previous month’s average quantity of stocks regularly traded in the exchange’s cash market.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) gives a trading system that notifies when the open interest of futures and contracts in security exceeds 60% of the security’s market-wide position limit. These notifications are highlighted at the 10-minute time frame.

Exemplified explanation of market-wide position limit (MWPL)

To understand the securities ban, it is essential to grasp the basics of market-wide position limit (MWPL). MWPL is determined by calculating 20% of the free float market cap of a company.

Suppose a company has a 10 crore net share volume. From this market cap of shares, five crore shares are held by promoters and thus form the restricted stock. The remaining stock of five crore constitutes the free-float market cap, which is open for trade on the free market.

Taking the above example, 20% of the free float market cap will be,

20% x 5 crore = 1 crore

Therefore, the company’s market-wide position limit is 1 crore shares.

They can reduce the place by selling the original position. To put it simply, you cannot open a new position until the security ban is lifted in F&O Segment. However, traders may opt for intraday positions as it is not related to open interest.

Why is a ban on securities imposed?

The vital reason why exchanges impose a ban on security in the F&O segment is to reduce the volatility in particular shares on both sides. The ban saves retail investors from significant losses. It also gives time to investors for rethinking their positions. Traders are not permitted to open any new positions in securities during a ban period. But they can exit already opened positions.

Penalty for breaching the ban

If a trader breaches the F&O ban, i.e., raises or opens a new position in security during the ban period, they are levied a fine of 1% of the rising position’s value. The lowest penalty limit is set at Rs 5,000, and the upper limit is Rs 1,00,000.

Ban resumption and normal F&O trading

After the ban, regular trading in securities only resumes when total open interest on all exchanges comes below 80% or less of the MWPL. In simple terms, when the open interest drops to 80% or less, stocks come out of the ban, and regular trading resumes.

Suppose a company’s market wide position limit is 80 crore shares and open interest is 78 crore shares. By calculating the percentage, i.e.,

{Open Interest / MWPL} x 100

{78 / 80} x 100 = 97.5,

The open interest comes out to be 97.5%. As the percentage is above 95%, the ban will remain on the company’s securities. It will only come out of the prohibition if the rate slips below 80%.

So, if the open interest reaches, say, 60 crore shares, which will mean

60/80 x 100 = 75%.

Thus, the share will be under 80% and will come out of the ban.

In the end, it is essential to remember that securities in the F&O segment that enter a ban period are the ones that are highly speculative and risky. Such shares are not a promising investment choice, especially for retail investors just beginning their investment journey. Still, even if you have entered such a risky transaction, you can trade the stock in the cash segment, where no such limits apply.

Investing in the stock markets is only as successful as your due diligence in conducting research and analysis before going forward with the investment. One of the most critical aspects of designing an investment strategy is determining which stocks are performing well along with the diversification of portfolios. This is where one of the historically strongest stocks come into the picture- the banking stocks.

Most retail investors have banking stocks in their portfolios. Banks and financial institutions have significant free floats that give investors a sense of security and profitability in the stock market. However, with limited access to credit in India, financial companies still have a long way to go. This is reflected in the expanding popularity of banking and financial stocks.

Yet, a bank stock’s credibility differs significantly from the review of everyday companies or traditional industrial stocks. Unlike non-financial corporations, where metrics such as working capital cycle, gross margin and leverage are essential to analyse, banking stocks need to be analysed using completely different parameters.

Reading bank statements and documents as part of the fundamental analysis can be a dexterous task. Too many numbers cause more confusion than a clear understanding. And that is what we are here to discuss. To analyse a bank’s monetary statements, one needs to know the following metrics.

Current Account Savings account (CASA) Ratio

The Current Account Savings (CASA) ratio is the ratio of total bank deposits in current and savings accounts to net deposits of a bank. It is generally used to ascertain how much money is in a bank in the form of savings account and current account deposits.

A high CASA ratio signifies that most bank deposits are liquid and linked to current and savings deposits. If a bank’s CASA rate is high, it usually shows that the net interest margin is very high, which means that the bank has an excellent operating capacity model. A high CASA ratio is what investors should look for before investing in a banking stock.

It is usually defined as a percentage of average fixed-income assets. The net interest margin measures the profitability of a bank’s investments. It considers the interest a bank makes on its securities and loans, subtracts the interest payable on debt and deposits, and divides it across the value of those securities and loans. For investors looking to invest in banking stocks, a higher net interest rate is desirable.

Non-performing Assets

Non-performing assets (NPAs) determine the risk of loans repayment by debtors to a bank. If no interest or instalment of the principal amount is paid for 90 days, the loan becomes a non-performing asset. NPAs are divided into gross and net non-performing assets. Gross NPA covers the principal and interest on total debt, and net NPA is calculated primarily by deducting bank provisions from all bad loans under Gross NPA.

Credit problems and non-performing assets have threatened Indian state-owned banks in recent years. The State Bank of India, India’s largest public sector bank, recorded 11% of its debt as outstanding loans as NPA in 2018. Investors should consider a bank with low or no NPAs before investing in its stock.

Cost of Liabilities and banking stock relation

Banks carry out different types of activities. But they majorly make money from loaning money to debtors. Simultaneous to banks’ lending activities, the interest payments on the deposits form a significant part of their operating expenses. Thus, deposits are a bank’s liabilities as there is an interest cost they must pay on these deposits.

The banks also need funds to function correctly. For that, it must borrow other than the received deposits. These borrowings usually come from the Reserve Bank of India, other institutions, banks, bonds, etc. Any borrowings carry an interest component that needs to be paid at regular intervals without fail. This interest component that a bank needs to pay is a part of the Cost of Liabilities.

The lower the cost on the liabilities, the better it is for the banks as it will increase the margins and hence increase the profitability. A high liability price is generally considered bad for a company as it will reduce the margins and increase the company’s interest-paying obligation.

Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR)

The capital adequacy ratio (CAR) calculates a bank’s available capital divided by the loans sanctioned by the bank. CAR helps estimate the financial strength or capability of the financial institution to meet its responsibilities by using its assets and resources.

A higher the CAR is indicative of a better capitalised bank. In India, as per the RBI norms, Indian-scheduled commercial banks are expected to maintain a CAR of 9 per cent, while Indian public-sector banks are stressed to keep a CAR of 12 per cent.

A bank with a CAR is above the minimum qualifications needed to suggest stability. Therefore, the higher a bank’s CAR, the more likely it is to endure a financial downturn, and thus, it is a good banking stock to buy-in.

In such situations, governments and the central banks use the most viable option to avert an economic crisis- buying pre-ordered government bonds and other assets to fill the economy with liquidity. This process is called quantitative easing (QE), and quantitative easing plays a vital role in the topic at hand here, i.e., Taper Tantrum in the stock market.

Recently, with the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic hardship and destruction ensued in every economy worldwide. To tackle the monetary crisis, most central banks, including the Reserve Bank of India, took steps involving quantitative easing to revive the economy by lowering interest rates and sending monetary benefits to citizens.

In this light, the concept of tapering is linked to a central bank’s banking strategy involving the gradual completion of the quantitative easing process.

Quantitative Easing (QE) effect and interest rates

Quantitative easing lowers interest rates. This reduces the returns (ROI) for investors on safe investments, such as certificates of deposit (CDs), money market loans, corporate bonds, etc. Therefore, investors are forced to invest with reasonable risk to generate significant returns. As an alternative, many of these investors consider building their stock market investment portfolios which heavily alter stock prices and increase volatility.

Falling interest rates also influence the decisions of listed companies. Lower interest rates mean lower borrowing costs. This encourages companies to grow their business and borrow more often.

Taper Tantrum

Tapering is the decrease of the rate at which a central bank purchases new assets. It is a gradual reduction in the flow of significant acquisitions of goods and securities by a central bank. Once the tapering is complete, a central bank may reduce the balance sheet size. The goal is to remove financial rewards and incentives slowly.

Tapering is not a new phenomenon. However, the first time it occurred in a way that had a significant global impact was during the 2013 Taper Tantrum. The “tantrum” resulted from the overestimated fears of stock market participants after the US government announced aid cuts.

The 2013 Taper Tantrum

The 2008 financial crunch led to a prolonged recession. As a result, the stock market experienced an unprecedented atmosphere of panic selling shares and other securities. Using the quantitative easing strategy, the US federal government immediately took steps to purchase large government bonds to maintain some form of liquidity in the economy.

This assisted in keeping the lending charges low and increased liquidity in the economy, assuring the investors of a better future.

Low-interest rates encouraged many people to increase credit and spending and accelerated the growth of businesses. From 2008 to 2015, the US government’s investment in the economy was approximately $4.5 trillion, up from $870 billion until 2007.

It’s important to remember that government-led investing in the economy is a short-term solution to a financial crunch. A long-term liquidity infusion by the government can lead to a high inflation rate in an economy.

When the US economy started to improve, the federal government announced a plan to lower the quantitative easing program by 2013. The US market weakened and fell by 4%, fuelling an international stock market downturn. The ‘digitally super-charged’ investors blew it up worldwide, and international markets reacted negatively to an event they should have already been expecting.

Indian stock market

Due to low interest rates on loans during the QE phase in the US, borrowers were in an accessible position when the lending position was stressed. Even though there was more money to be borrowed, lower interest rates hurt lenders. The financial sector needed more consistency. Around this time, American investors began parking funds in Asian markets, including the emerging Indian market—this boosted foreign investment and FDI in India.

As the US government implemented tapering, US interest rates rose, and investors started returning home to get better returns on their investments. In doing so, they pulled out funds from the Indian ecosystem.

Following this rebound, the Indian Rupee fell significantly along with foreign investment returns. This pushed the Reserve Bank of India to raise interest rates overnight. The dollar continued to strengthen, leading to inflation in India. This put investors in a frenzy of crisis and disrupted the growing economy.

India and other emerging markets were hit hard by inflationary pressures. The pain increased as the currency depreciated against the US dollar. After tapering, investors expected a catastrophe on the stock markets. But the impact was cushioned and thankfully short-lived.

Impact of tapering on markets

As mentioned above, tapering often leads to ‘taper tantrums’, i.e., the common panic that accompanies the central bank decreasing its QE program. As central banks start to buy fewer assets, fears that liquidity would decline, and the global market could crumble generates fear waves among investors.

A taper tantrum often pans across bond prices. And when bond prices decline, bond yields grow. There is always a probability that shares and indices could accompany the trend since the bond market boosts stocks. However, in previous tapering scenarios, this has never actually occurred.

During the US tapering, interest rates and bond yields rose. The US stock market performed fine, while the impact on Indian markets was minor. Between 2013 and January 2020, before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sensex rose by a massive 105%.

COVID induced impacts on stock markets and investors

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated risks, the US Federal Government began acquiring government assets and bonds again in 2020. The Federal Government bought securities worth $120 billion from the market. But as the situation improves, tapering by slashing the bond-buying programme is inevitable.

Since investment into India ever since the US restarted its bond-buying programme has not been notable, India may not have much to lose if a situation of investor outgo arises. Despite the announcement, the Indian markets cushioned volatility and fell by 1%, keeping its record-high performance.

As the news of a fresh round of tapering is breaking, many are curious about its impact on the Indian market. It is given even more importance due to the possibility of a third COVID wave.

The fact for the Indian market and economic conditions remains that the economy’s fundamentals are much better than what they were during the global fiscal crisis. So, experts anticipate that while there may be some short-term impact, the tapering process will not affect the Indian economy that much.

The impact on Indian equities may be negligent, as seen during the first taper. Internal institutional investors such as mutual, insurance and pension funds can step up the buying to reduce the impact. With the retail investors’ population increasing in India, prominent foreign portfolio investor (FPI) outflows may not adversely affect the market much.

Nonetheless, the stock market is unpredictable, and it is reasonable that investors remain careful of their positions on the stock market.

In simple terms, floating stock is the aggregate shares of a company’s stock available in the open market.

Floating stocks denote the total number of shares available to the public for buying and selling. Shares traded by investors do not affect the floating stock because this does not reflect any change in the restricted and closely-held shares.

The formula for Calculating Floating Stock

The outstanding shares of a company do not always signify the floating stock amount. The subsequent formula can be used to obtain the floating stock value:

Floating Stock = Outstanding Shares – {Restricted Shares + Institution-owned Shares + ESOPs}

Here,

Limited shares are non-transferable until the lock-up days after the initial public offering (IPO) is over. The shares are non-transferable.

ESOP is an employee stock holding policy in a corporation through which the workers get an ownership interest.

Significance of floating stock

The number of floating stocks determines the liquidity and volatility of the share. Small-cap companies, i.e., companies with a low number of shares available, have low floating stocks. Sellers or buyers for these stocks are not easy to find because fewer stocks are available to trade. Therefore, small float stocks tend to have more variations than larger ones.

A company’s free-floating stock changes over time. If a company sells more shares to raise more capital, the free float will increase. Conversely, if the company buys back the remaining shares, the free float percentage rate will fall.

A high percentage of floating stock represents fewer controlled shares. In such a case, stocks are less prone to the influence of institutions, management, or insiders who have confidential control.

A large number of floating stocks means more shares are available for public trading. Therefore, this facilitates buying and selling and attracts many investors. Institutional investors want to invest in large stocks in highly liquid companies. However, these significant acquisitions do not have a significant impact on the share price.

The stock prices of companies with substantial floating stocks are susceptible to company or industry news information. This volatility and liquidity provide more opportunities to buy and sell stocks in the market.

Limitations

Investors in small floating stocks companies are limited because insufficient stock prevents investors from investing. No matter the company’s business ability, this lack of stocks availability certainly hinders the opportunity to expand its investor pool.

The company may issue additional shares to increase the floating stock, even if no additional capital needs to be raised. This measure, however, may cause the share price to fall due to dilution, which will have a significant impact on existing shareholders.

Impact of floating stocks

A free float does not directly affect individual investors, especially those who invest in mutual funds, ETFs, and other securities. It also has no direct impact on investors investing in the company’s shares in the long run.

This is because the stock’s efficiency can be significantly improved by reducing the variable float stock. So, in that situation, it is the marketer’s responsibility to correctly assess the company’s future, its vision, performance, growth, and more such aspects.

However, low floating stocks directly impact investors who often buy and sell stocks as the value fluctuates a lot in the short term. In addition, when the size of the float decreases, investors may face the problem of lack of funds, which worsens the overall problem. Hence, if you are a short-term trader, it is not recommended to choose low float stocks; you may end up selling them at a lesser price when you invest in low stock floats.

As an investor, you need to understand what depositories are and what is their role in the stock market. They are, after all, the most fundamental players in the market’s functioning. Depositories are entities that hold your shares or securities in electronic or intangible form (dematerialised format). They guard and store any type of stock market security.

There are two major depositories in India: National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) and Central Securities Depository Limited (CDSL). These two depositories facilitate your Demat transactions and make trading in the stock market easier. Opening a Demat account and a trading account is imperative for starting the investment journey. And these depositories are responsible for the opening and management of your accounts.

Understanding depositories

Both National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) and Central Securities Depository Limited (CDSL) are depositories that maintain stock market participant’s financial records. They communicate with investors through Depository Participants (DPs). The DP acts as the intermediary’s representative between depositors and their clients. DPs are authorised by a depository under the relevant legislations of the SEBI Act.

You need to open a Demat account to use depositories’ financial services. Usually, depository participants are the brokerage and trading platforms like Zerodha, Upstox, Groww, etc. These companies provide the demat account opening services along with market activity reports and other value-added services.

National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL)

The National Securities Depository Limited is affiliated to the National Stock Exchange (NSE). NSDL is the oldest and largest depository of electronic securities in India. It was established in 1996 and is based in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is the first depository in India to exchange and pay for securities electronically or in Demat form. NSDL has around 1.7 crore investor accounts and 30,500 points of service in 2000 cities.

Central Depository Securities Limited (CDSL)

Central Depository Securities Limited (CDSL) trades on the Mumbai Stock Exchange (BSE). CDSL is the second depository of securities in India after NSDL. It was set up in 1999 in Mumbai. It is the second largest securities and stock market accounting depository in India. CDSL operates over 19,000 DP service centres with investor accounts of approximately 1.6 crore people.

The question of superiority is thus rooted in an investor’s preference of the stock exchange they want to indulge in, i.e., either the National Stock Exchange or the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Moreover, the investor does not have the liberty of choosing the depository they want to open their Demat account with. A broker or depository participant selects either NSDL or CDSL by analysing which depository will be more economical and conveniently accessible to open a Demat account.

For clients, the brokers can debit or credit securities from either of these depositories, given that they hold valid power vested in them by an attorney permitting them to do so.

Investor’s concern

There are no major concerns for investors regarding the depository with which their account gets registered. However, some brokers outline specialised benefits in opening CDSL or NSDL accounts as further leverage. This is just a marketing ploy to get you to create an account with them.

As an investor, you can easily open a Demat account and a trading account, with a DP linked to one of the depositories. If you are starting your investment journey in the stock market, never forget to choose a trusted and reliable broker. Always look for features like a free online Demat account and no annual maintenance fee (AMC). They can offer you the most advanced trading platform and the best Demat services.

When buying or selling shares, you have to select either Day or IOC to initiate your trade.

An immediate or cancel order (IOC) is the purchase or sale of securities intended to execute all or part of the order immediately and then cancel the leftovers. An IOC order is one of many long-term orders that can determine how active the order is in the market and under what conditions it has been cancelled.

Immediate or cancel orders attempt to execute immediately and cancel any unfilled portion.

Basics of an IOC Order

Investors can place either a limit or a market order using the IOC option based on specific requirements. The IOC limit order is placed at a specific price, while the IOC market order has no specified purchase price, and the shares are traded at the best selling (or buying) price.

An IOC order specifies that it must be executed as soon as it is published in the market. This ensures that you sell or purchase a stock almost immediately. If this is not done, the order is cancelled, post which it does not have the pending status. The order is cancelled immediately, and no action from the investor is needed.

An IOC is a ‘period’ order, which means that the investor chooses how long the order will stay in the market. IOC is a ‘zero duration’ order as the time between placing the order and execution is only a few seconds.

An IOC order may be set as a market or limit order. A limit order delineates that you can sell or purchase security only when it reaches a specific price. The transaction is done at the current price point when you initiate a market order.

Example

The current price of XYZ’s shares is Rs. 145 per share, and you set the buy price at Rs. 143.70 or below per share. When you reach the validity portion of your buy process, you get to choose between DAY or IOC for the order’s validity.

Here, DAY means that if you initiate the buy order with the DAY option, your buy order will only be executed if the share’s price reaches your desired limit or is below it. Your order will stay pending for the entire day of trading (i.e., till 3.30 PM). But, if the price does not reach your set limit of Rs.143.7 by the day’s end, this order will expire (or get cancelled) on its own.

On the other hand, if you choose the immediate or cancel option, you will be able to buy the shares that are immediately available at your set price. If the number of shares you are looking to buy is available immediately in the volume, your IOC enabled order will fulfil the trade altogether.

But suppose you have placed an order of more shares than what is available. In that case, you will only be able to buy the ones available immediately, and the order for the remaining shares will get cancelled or expired immediately.

The availability of shares is shown in the market depth of the particular share you are interested in buying.

So, if you place the order for 100 shares using the IOC option and there are only, say, 42 shares available immediately at a price set by you (Rs. 143.7), you will be able to buy the 42 shares, and the order for remaining 48 will get cancelled simultaneously. It basically means that if your price is matched, the order will get placed immediately. If not, it will be cancelled immediately.

The difference between an IOC order and a day order is straightforward. If unfulfilled, a day order cancels after the trading day, whereas an IOC is ended when the security is unavailable.

When to use an IOC order – Benefits and importance

Investors use IOC instructions while submitting a large order to avoid having it filled at an array of prices. An ICO order automatically removes any part of your order that has not been processed.

To understand an IOC order, you need to understand the stock market better. When you open a Demat account and make a purchase or sell order, there is no guarantee that the transfer order will be fulfilled. It can take a long time between buying and selling the securities. If you place a purchase order but there are not many buyers, the wait for order completion will be longer. The waiting time results in many active positions, which can be confusing and challenging to monitor. Thus, the Immediate or Cancel Order comes in handy in such situations.

When is the IOC option effective?

Unlike an all or none order, IOC guarantees that you get access to whatever is available in the market as part of your buy or sell trade. You can add the IOC option to your online trading account. IOC enabled trades are also helpful if you use algorithms or trading programs with free investing services. This allows you to act faster and not have to track all the large orders you place.

Words of wisdom

With correct use, immediate or cancel orders can be highly effective. Multiple IOC instructions may be executed without having to keep track of their status for an extended period. Nonetheless, it would help if you used it sparingly because many partially completed IOC orders will throw your calculations off. If you keep putting IOC orders that only partially or never execute, your order/trade ratio will rise. SEBI closely tracks this to record market uncertainty. Thus, to the degree practicable, use IOC orders with caution and vigilantly.

Leveraging their knowledge and money they conduct share transactions of high value. There are two types of transactions done by large and institutional investors – block deal and bulk deal. Let us delve deeper to know what they are and how such heavy deals impact the market.

What is a block deal?

It is a transaction that involves either a minimum quantity of 500,000 shares or a minimum order value of Rs 10 crore between the two parties. The agreed parties buy or sell shares at a predetermined price. Block deals have two separate trading windows of 15 minutes each meaning within the said time the deal needs to happen. The first trading window opens in the morning from 8:45 AM to 9:00 AM and the second trading window opens in the afternoon from 2:05 PM to 2:20 PM. The idea of keeping separate trading windows is to ensure confidentiality of the large trades, transparency, and curb unnecessary volatility while trading such a large number of shares.

Block deals are transacted concerning a block reference price. For the morning trading slot, the reference price of the share will be the previous day’s closing price of the stock. The reference price of stocks for afternoon trading will be based on the volume-weighted average market price (VWAP). This deal is a single transaction and does not appear in the normal trading window for retail investors to see.

Before initiating block trades, the parties are supposed to inform the stock exchanges.

However, sometimes such trading does not necessarily mean the stock is profitable as it could be the last shot in luring retail investor’s interest towards a stock. Such investment is used as bait to attract more investment. Many investors sometimes report the bulk deal to be 0.5% of the total shares, but actually, it is traded lower than the reported, to build up the investor interest in a particular company’s stocks. Therefore, investors should not blindly believe in such voluminous deals and do a detailed study before investing.
