Edtech is the fastest expanding industry in the world

Globally, education technology is expected to grow at 16.3% from 2019 to 2025, with total international spending reaching $404 billion during the period. Even at this level, by 2025, spending on education and digital technologies will only represent 5.5% of the global education market that is pegged to be worth $ 7.3 trillion.

The size of the Indian edtech market

As per data by the Statista Research Department, the market value of the Indian K-12 education market in 2020 was approximated to be worth $1.16 billion, compared to less than $500 million valuation in the development market for education skills. In 2020 the total market value was around $2.8 billion, but by 2025 this situation will change drastically, and the whole market size will reach $10.4 billion.

According to the Omidyar Network India and Redseer Consulting report, by 2022, online education services across Classes 1 to 12 are predicted to increase 6.3 times to form a $1.7 billion market. The post-K-12 market is set to grow 3.7 times to build a $1.8 billion market.

Byju’s is ‘taking space’ in India and the world

While Byju’s is growing its own services and platform rapidly, it is also overtaking new spaces and platforms at both national and global levels to become a genuinely international education and training company.

Starting, for example, from its acquisition of the US-based start-up, EPIC – the digital reading platform for children, at $500 million, Byju’s has made space for itself on the global start-up map. No wonder it is the 11th most valuable start-up in the world.

By expanding its US footprint, Byju’s is reaching for more than any other edtech company in the world. In many of its acquisitions, the edtech start-up retains the original teams and lets them carry their functions under Byju’s umbrella, making them a Byju’s company. EPIC co-founders Suren Markosian and Kevin Donahue have also been retained in their roles. They continue carrying out the company’s mission to ‘unlock the potential of every child through reading’.

New-age business and division of success – lessons for upcoming entrepreneurs

More people ought to be credited for Byju’s expansion and success, along with Byju’s co-founders Byju Raveendran and Divya Gokulnath and the company’s C-suite.

For instance, take Anitha Kishore, the maths teacher and Chief Strategy Officer driving acquisitions at Byju’s. Kishore is considered to be the driving force behind Byju’s massive expansion spree across international borders.

As head of the strategy, Anita Kishore works closely with Byju on inorganic growth strategies. She also plays the role of a strategic CFO, working on capital allocation decisions and fundraisers, along with investor management. This type of multi-level involvement of teachers in Byju’s growth is seen as the main force behind the edtech giant’s success.

Divya Gokulnath, Byju’s co-founder, was among the first people who started teaching on Byju’s platform. Despite being the company’s co-founder, Gokulnath counts herself as a teacher first. At Byju’s, she first started teaching easy hacks to get through campus recruitment and then shifted to mathematics, English and reasoning classes.

This goes on to show that teachers, as well as executives, at Byju’s are witnessing their renaissance as not only educators and subject matter experts but also as pioneers of business formation and market capturing. And new businesses in the segment can learn a lot from these recent trends.

In addition, Flipkart acquired Myntra in 2014 for $300 million. The move consolidated Flipkart’s position in the e-commerce market and placed it on the global map of tech start-ups that “made it big.”

In July 2021, Byju’s acquired Great Learning, a professional and higher education company, for $600 million, and US-based digital reading platform Epic for $500 million. In April 2021, it bought out Aakash Education Services for a whopping $1 billion, affirming its space in the traditional coaching segment. Most famously, in August 2020, Byju’s bought ‘coding for kids’ edtech start-up WhiteHat Jr for $300 million.

Byju’s acquisition spree is helping the firm increase its lead over its competitors such as SoftBank-backed Unacademy, Simplilearn, UpGrad, Vedantu, Amazon Academy and traditional education institutes.

How do small businesses and start-ups get affected by acquisitions and mergers?

Many financial and business experts argue that acquisitions by big corporates exhibit their predator behaviour as they buy out the competition to maintain a monopoly. And that seems true in many cases; case in point, Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram and WhatsApp. It made Facebook the world’s biggest social media giant with transcontinental reach and access to billions of people’s data.

But in many cases, acquisition mergers are beneficial too, especially for small businesses and start-ups. When a small business gets acquired, it either gets full money for the stake or gains access to its parent companies’ vast resources while maintaining authentic leadership. There are many examples of this, like Tata Son’s multi-million stake in health tech start-up CureFit, Flipkart’s acquisition of Myntra and others. This helps the business grow and proves beneficial for both, the mega-corporate and the new company, which can now have financial stability and support to fall back on.

EdTech start-ups have received $80 million in funding so far that makes them the market king with $9.5 billion. The process of studying smart and not in the conventional way has taken a toll on the GenZ and therefore parents are inclined towards these kinds of apps more for their kids’ overall development.

The closed doors of schools in the pandemic are the tailwind behind the EdTech sector and Byjus aspires to become the undisputed leader of it. According to RBSA Advisors Byjus is gearing to become the largest decacorn EdTech start-up worth $30 billion in 10 years. The recent infusion of funds worth $340 million from investors such as the UBS Group, Zoom founder Eric Yuan, Blackstone, Abu Dhabi sovereign fund ADQ, and Phoenix Rising-Beacon Holdings has increased its valuation upto $16.5 billion surpassing Paytm and inching closer to its ambitious plan of raising a total of $ 1.5 billion in 2021. In 2020, Byjus alone raised a lion’s share of $1 billion from the total funding of $2.2 billion in the EdTech sector, as per Venture Intelligence Data. After attracting a huge volume of investments, this begs a question: how is Byjus eyeing to own a larger pie of the EdTech sector?

Acquisitions and the International Market Dream

Byjus online learning quickly shifted its gears from personalised learning to gain foothold in online school classrooms and online tutoring platforms etc. by acquiring Vidyartha, TutorVista, and Edurite. Byjus made these acquisitions keeping in mind to launch new product offerings in online learning solutions to schools through Vidyartha and gain access to the international market leveraging the user base of Tutorvista.

Its acquisition spree did not end there. The year 2020 witnessed the biggest offline tutorial chain Aakash Educational Services getting acquired by Byjus in a deal worth $1billion to strengthen its presence in the engineering and medical entrance exam segment.

WhiteHat Jr an online coding platform for kids is perhaps the first start-up that caught Byjus attention within 20 months of its launch in 2020. The platform will soon launch music, science, and English also creating native courses for the mobile. 70 percent of WhiteHat Jr.’s revenue comes from countries UK and USA. Therefore, holding on to Whitehat Jr expansive reach in international markets, Byjus is launching Byju’s Future School, an online live one-on-one learning platform for coding and mathematics for the USA, UK, Australia, Brazil, Indonesia, and Mexico markets. To tap the kid’s age group of 3-8 years in the US market, Byjus has acquired Osmo – a US-based educational games maker which will offer learning solutions in the US market by leveraging its physical-to-digital technology and content.

What does this mean for Byjus and India?

With the acquisition of several international and national medium-sized EdTech companies and offline tutorial chains, it can be inferred that Byjus does not want to keep any segment of the educational sector untapped nationally and internationally thus creating a high barrier for the new entrants. Right from kindergarten to high school to competitive exams, Byju wants to gain a strong foothold in the national and international markets. To penetrate deeper into India’s semi-urban cities, it plans to introduce subjects in vernacular languages, with a new mentoring programme where every student will have a dedicated mentor. The new mentoring programme will effectively assist in student’s doubt-solving.

India’s Edtech Curve?

In the absence of chalks and blackboards, learning online seems to be the only viable option for students. Though EdTech cannot replace classrooms, the online classes from Byjus will offer a gamified approach in learning, therefore, helping students to grasp each concept. The lines of online and offline learning will be blended and create an efficient educational system.

It is ironic that a company that seeks to distribute knowledge is named Unacademy. [Un (Not)-academy].

Gaurav Munjal had come across a concept of ‘Unconference’ during his college days. Unconference is everything that a conference isn’t. No specific agenda, anyone can attend, anyone can talk about anything interesting, you can wear whatever you want, you can attend whatever talk you want. This particular term remained embedded in the back of Munjal’s mind and was unearthed in 2010. This time it was not a college conference but the education industry.

Unacademy.in is supposed to be everything that a traditional academy isn’t and more, explains Munjal, who turned this vision into business in 2010 with two other co-founders – Roman Saini and Hemesh Singh.

Tapping Business Opportunity Behind Hobby

Unacademy had started out as a Youtube channel. Munjal, a college student, was no alien to the world of ‘Youtubing’, both for leisure and business. During his college days itself, he started posting educational videos about computer programming on the channel.

As time progressed he started his own real estate company, Flatchat, which later got sold to Common Floor in the year 2014. In the same year, Munjal began observing the niche of digital education, owing to the popularity of his videos, and decided to go full time with his channel.

To understand the potential of digital education better, he shared the start-up idea with his peer Roman Saini, who was at the time serving as an Assistant Collector of Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. Saini, who himself had once taken a loan from a friend to pay for his hefty coaching centre fee, was moved by the idea of learning from the comfort of home at much lesser fees.

Thus with the mission to make education accessible, break the restrictive classroom-learning structure and augment the teaching and learning process, he came on board. It soon became a trio as Hemesh Singh, who had been with Munjal since his Flatchat days, joined in as Chief Technical Officer (CTO).

Unacademy started out as a humble YouTube education channel, focussing on preparation of competitive exams. Seeing the massive popularity of the channel within a short span, the founders decided to officially register Unacademy as an e-learning platform under its parent company Sorting Hat Pvt. Ltd. in 2015.

Gradually, it was joined by 36 new educators comprising IITians, CAs, IAS officers, teachers who contributed in making 500 free lessons on a wide range of subjects. Within a year, the start-up received its first round of funding of total $500K from Blume Ventures, Rajan Anandan of Google, Sumit Jain of CommonFloor, among others.

“The big money is not in the buying or selling, but in the waiting” – Charlie Munger, American businessman and investor.

When investors put in their money in a start-up, especially the one that initially does not have a very solid revenue model, it’s evident that they don’t do it for the short term returns. Rather, they see a long-term potential. Unacademy was on the right track. The main reason being it wasn’t trying to replace the traditional classroom teaching model or a teacher per se. Rather, augment the same with technology. The investors knew that the future was virtual and Unacademy’s product offering was in the right books.

By the end of 2016, they had about 100 educators providing 1,500 lessons. The start-up quickly managed to raise its Series A of $ 4.5 million by the start of 2017. The line of investors included – Blume Ventures, Sachin Bansal, Binny Bansal, Kunal Shah, Stanford Angels India, Nexus Venture Partners among others.

What upped Unacademy’s game was the unique idea of providing tailored courses in the competitive-test-prep market, which has a huge potential owing to its popularity. With investors flogging in, the company came up with “Unacademy Educator” – an app for educators to help them create videos from the comforts of their homes. From time management lessons to motivational talks, the start-up managed to get personalities like Kiran Bedi, famous cricketers Brian Lara, Brett Lee and Jonty Rhodes, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and the star couple Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma, as its official educators, increasing its credibility as an e-learning platform.

Today, Unacademy has as many as twelve platforms in the market ranging from the Unacademy Learning App to test prep app Graphy, with a monthly visit of 6,295,259 users.

From Freemium to Subscription: Finding PMF

Initially, Unacademy distributed their content in the form of mini courses for free. This approach was quite similar to the one adopted by Jio – Free internet for all. This Freemium Model is generally adopted by companies to amass a user base and gain popularity in the industry. Unacademy followed the Jio suit and allowed people to have access to their videos for free. However, they kept a certain category of premium videos saleable. This strategy worked well for the start-up as they were able to garner around 15 million views, with more than 52K registered users within a few months of start-up’s official registration.

The start-up was pumping its user base each month, reaching different regions and delivering personalised content. During the entire course of its journey, Unacademy made sure that it comes up with new products/apps/content to retain that user base and keep the quality at check. This is extremely important for a start-up which is in a space of aggressive competition, with everyone wanting a share in the billion dollar pie.

At an early stage of their venture, Unacademy had identified their target audience, especially in Tier 2 and Tier 3 regions. Since a significant fraction of its learners were based in remote towns and villages, the team started to optimise its lessons to load on low bandwidth connections and mobile data. The start-up smartly turned the challenge into an opportunity with technological prowess.

Unacademy achieved a turnover of 1.8 Crores in December 2018, with seven times higher revenue compared to the previous year.

Every start-up reaches a point where they question themselves – What next? In one of his blogs, Munjal shared, even though they had great revenue, growing month-on-month, something was missing – Product Market Fit (PMF).

They (team) knew live classes were working and learners were loving it but somehow they were hating the idea of buying different Plus Courses. The company needed a simple solution: One-stop-solution for cracking the exam. A solution where users could access the live classes in a structured manner by the best educators.

Following intensive brainstorming, the team decided to launch a subscription model, which would provide a structured and streamlined downloadable courses accessible to paid users.

The team started working on the subscription product on January 3 and made it live on January 29. The company had to build the entire framework, product and align 400 educators to launch subscriptions in 12 exam categories.

The revenue soured by 7x in 11 months. By the end of 2019, Unacademy was attracting a greater number of investors. However, an orbital shift in the start-up’s investment and numbers came after the pandemic, which brought in a tectonic shift in the online education industry. Edutech became a natural gainer as online learning moved towards becoming a necessity.

In May 2020, Unacademy touched an all time high with 3,50,000 subscribers. The start-up hit the iron when it was piping hot! Following the worldwide lockdown, Unacademy came out with blazing guns of intensive recruitment, scale up, fundings and new products to retain its position at the top of the Edtech space.

This gave the company the key to the billion dollar club. Unacademy hit the unicorn status in September 2020 after raising $150 Million from SoftBank Vision Fund.

Under my Umbrella!

As Edtech startups build a war chest amidst the fading galore, the natural course of action was acquisition to strengthen the product. In 2000 alone, Unacademy acquired six start-ups – Kreatryx, CodeChef, PrepLadder, Mastree, Coursavy and NeoStencil – in various sectors to solidify its position against its biggest competitor BYJU’S. Other deals included TapChief and e-learning site Handa Ka Funda.

Unacademy expanded its umbrella to accommodate a diverse user base, increase its market share and cashed in on the popularity of the acquired companies. Unacademy had been focusing on preparation for competitive exams (JEE, UPSC, NEET, CAT, etc.) and strengthened the same with smart acquisitions and tie-ups. There is also an advent advantage in this kind of content – scalability and wider adoption. The nature of the content (competitive exams) is easily replicable and scalable to be rechristened as multiple offerings.

Interestingly, in the second half of 2020, they started looking at the K-12 segment as well. Unacademy had started out with focusing on recorded content and creating tools for educators to create content. As interest for live learning space picks up pace, the start-up is also looking to venture into the segment.

Acing Exams!

No start-up has smooth sailing. When Unacademy started out, the industry saw less than 1% venture capital flow in India. A lot of experiments were ongoing – some developing, some sailing smooth while some crashing.

One of the biggest reasons why Unacademy has managed to survive and thrive to date is its ideation.

The reason why Unacademy didn’t fail like other edtech startups or aced its exam of revenue generation, was the idea behind it. This holds true for all the test-taking/preparation platforms. They didn’t aim to replace the teacher but to augment the teaching process.

Second, they picked up the aggressively popular ‘parallel education system’ as their core sector. Plus, they picked up courses/exams which need relearning like UPSC, which is an high-value intensive course.

The start-up faced stiff competition initially from BYJU’S, Toppr and Khan Academy, which at some point were also delivering free content. However Unacademy’s USP was the convenience with which educators delivered content. They kept bringing in more educators as collaborators with an exclusive app meant for educators, as popularity increased.

This provided content to be generated at the pace of its consumption, at the same time ensuring dynamism, something its competitors lacked. It is a very smart model where educators become the influencers and marketers for the company.

This makes Unacademy an extremely asset-light company. The educators app is the game changer. No need for fancy studios or attention capturing content. The app is unique as the – ‘Student is tutor, tutor is student’. Most of the educators are young pass-outs or teachers who have recently completed the same exams successfully. Unacademy is proud of its uniqueness and ability in making education accessible to the extent that people who earlier were its students have now turned into educators on the same platform.

The agility of the company in shifting its users to an app from Youtube channel is also commendable. This way they have been able to monetise the freemium model they had initially launched with the app-based subscription model.

Back in 2015, we saw a huge surge in ad spends by e-commerce start-ups like Myntra, Flipkart and Snapdeal as the industry boomed. This trend picked up pace over the years with start-ups riding a particular industry boom (e-commerce, e-retail, edtech) each year, putting in big cheques in advertisement.

This number was expected to rise in future. However, something has been unusual in the past one or two years, especially post pandemic. According to media buyers’ estimates, start-ups now account for 10% in India’s advertising expenses. The overall ad spend may hit Rs 80,000 crore in 2021. This means 8,000-8,500 crore (10%) has come from new-age companies. No doubt, the surge was expected, but not to the level of 10%.

Besides developing a big advertising appetite, the start-ups have gone a step further and overshadowed big brands across many platforms. What happened in the past one year? Let’s find out.

Big funding deals were seen for start-ups such as Byju’s, Unacademy, Zomato, CRED, Delhivery, Razorpay, Vedantu and Cars24 along with ballooning valuations.

This momentum refuses to slow down. Barely four months into the current calendar year and the sector has already birthed 10 unicorns (11 in 2020) with $4.4 billion funding in the January-March quarter of 2021.

This spells one major change. The curve ball thrown across sectors by pandemic was caught well by the new-age tech/digital start-ups, who are today in demand more than ever. This is their opportunity to grow.

Strike While the Iron is Hot!

Now what happens when you have large investment, fast- growing revenue potential and an addressable base? You look to invest in brand equity and go all in to capture the user base and create a brand recall, especially when the space becomes extremely competitive and digital (Lockdown).

This is in complete tune with flush of funds from venture capitalists. Following the pandemic, outdoor/below-the-line advertisement has become extremely limited, leaving the choice limited to digital mediums. Now, since the choice is limited with everyone flocking to the same medium to capture the screen time, companies are looking to associate with high-profile (expensive) properties for aggressive marketing and advertising.

Who will step up? The one who needs to (growing stage, competition, user base) and very well could (deep-pocketed investors) during these times i.e. start-ups.

Sports Leagues + Festive Season: Cherry on the Cake

Apart from usual ad mediums like television, OTT platforms, social media and websites, start-ups splashed cash like never before on sports league-IPL, Indian Super league (ISL) and Pro Kabaddi League (PKL)- which come as a one time opportunity in a year for companies to create a recall. This is especially significant during Covid times. The IPL also coincided with festive times.

Looking at the advertising budget of some of the top start-up- Byju’s spent Rs 400-500 crore in advertising in 2020 while gaming firm Dream11 spent Rs 350-400 crore and My11Circle spent Rs 150-250 crore, as per a Pitch Madison Advertising report. Other new breed of sponsors include PhonePe, CRED, Paytm, Dailyhunt and Khatabook, Acko, WhiteHat Jr, Policybazaar, Netmeds and Upstox.

Given the thriving revenue, funding and valuation numbers of start-ups (digital, edtech platforms, payment gateways, gaming platforms, OTT players) amidst the current state of affairs, the 10% ad spend figure will continue to jump further.

Indian start-ups ended 2020 with about $9.3 billion fundraisings, much less compared to the record $14.5 billion raised in the previous year. The covid19 pandemic and a handful of other factors like the absence of big investors slowed deal making for start-ups in India in 2020 as elsewhere. However, Byju’s could raise over $1 billion in 2020 and is already inching closer to closing another 500 million dollars. We are now getting some answers as to why Byju’s raised this money. The answer is the news that Byju’s is acquiring Aakash Educational Services Ltd (AESL) for $1 billion in cash and stock combo at a valuation of $12 billion. Byju’s buyout of Aakash is one of the largest such acquisitions by an Indian start-up – bigger than Snapdeal’s purchase of Freecharge for $400 million in 2015 and Flipkart’s acquisition of Myntra for an estimated $330 million in 2014.

Byju’s is currently the most valuable EdTech start-up in the world and the second most valuable start-up in India from any sector after Paytm. Byju’s is also one of the only three decacorns (newly set up companies valued above $10 billion) in India at a value of US$15B (though valued at $12 billion for Aakash deal), the others being Paytm and OYO.

Glance through a bit of history of Byju’s and Aakash

Let us take a quick look at the journey of Byju’s and Aakash so far for us to get a better perspective of the deal and the road ahead.

A brief history of Byju’s Learning App (Think and Learn)

Byju Raveendran, the founder CEO of Byju’s was born into teacher parents and raised in Azhikode, a small, humble town in the Kannur district of Kerala. When Byju Raveendran was working as an engineer with a shipping company based in the UK, he started to help his friends prepare for the CAT exam, an entrance exam for getting into the best b-schools of India. To test himself out of curiosity, Byju also gave the exam and secured 100 percent in his first attempt. Surprised and thinking it was a fluke, he attempted once again. Again, 100 percent score! Maybe that was the first big turning point in his life.

Though he secured a score others would die for, Byju decided not to enter into India’s finest graduate programs known for their cut-throat competition and minuscule admission rates. Soon the two friends who wanted him to tutor them for CAT turned into 4, and then 8, all of a sudden 16. Between 2006 and 2011, Byju’s tutoring sessions went from 40 students to over 1,000 at crowded venues across various metro cities. By 2010, over 1,200 aspiring MBA applicants fought their way into this popular course through his classes.

An aha moment occurred for Byju when he realised that many of his college graduate students were struggling in math and science from a foundational perspective. He felt that the students didn’t have a core understanding of logic; their entire schooling was focused on exam grades, not learning the concepts and fundamentals. Pain point identified, the next big turning point for Byju.

“I was a teacher by choice and an entrepreneur by chance.” – says Byju Raveendran. In 2011, Think and Learn (Byju’s learning app’s parent company) was launched by him, and his wife and co-founder, Divya Gokulnath. Byju realised if he could raise the funds, he could create, package, and deliver the best educational content for students across India to solve the identified pain points because he had an uncanny passion and knack for teaching ideas and concepts the way which would later revolutionise such coaching.

He correctly identified the need for a product and platform that would appeal to the parents of the students, who prioritise quality education for their children over anything else. That meant that Byju’s would have to beat out the incumbent players in the conventional tutoring and coaching space that many traditional households were already paying for.

In 2015, he launched Byju’s – The Learning App which currently has over 80 million students cumulatively learning from the app, 5.5 million annual paid subscriptions, and an annual renewal rate of 86 percent. This was achieved by strategically pivoting from exclusively serving aspiring graduate school applicants to the larger untapped market: 250 million+ K-12 grade students in India.
In place of the traditional model of integrating physical classroom environments into digital tools or platforms, Byju’s decided to disrupt the outside-the-classroom digital experience. By investing upfront in content development and curation focused on the core subjects of Math, Science, English language, and Arts, Byju’s did develop a massively entertaining and engaging library of lessons in fundamental subjects for every student in the K-12 segment and undergraduate students aiming for admission to India’s premium graduate schools.

Rather than just offering a digital version of outdated learning methods/styles as has been the trend till recently, Byju’s strategy is to embrace everything that makes learning fun, entertaining and relatable. For example, students would learn about gravity via a neatly assembled graphic video of the earth, moon’s orbit, and an instructor walking quickly but articulately through an example of the moon’s relationship with the earth. Byju’s methods ensure that complex concepts and theories get delivered in easily comprehensible and digestible forms.

Byju’s co-founder Divya Gokulnath declared a $370M in revenue for the year ended 31st March 2020. The elite venture capital investors across the globe have started noticing Byju’s potential and strengths, and funds have started flowing in easily. Funding rounds have so far come from some big investor names like Tencent Holdings, Sequoia Capital, Qatar Investment Authority, Chan-Zuckenberg Initiative, Owl Ventures and Mary Meeker which in turn has boosted Byju’s valuation and enhanced its brand.

All these firms are chasing the first true EdTech company that has successfully reached such great product-market traction quickly. With the support and strategic reach of these powerful firms, Byju’s stands formidable in its quest to gain international access.
With lots of cash on hand, BYJU’s has been aggressive in constantly keeping the brand top of mind of households by roping in the likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Virat Kohli, Lionel Messi. Some of the big sports celebrities sport the Byju’s jersey in various Indian national matches of different sports which reach large numbers of viewers across India and the globe.

A quick history of Aakash Educational Services Ltd

From a tiny brick and mortar coaching centre started in Delhi in 1988 to a Rs 1,200-crore-plus annual turnover, Aakash Educational Services (AESL) has dreamed big ever since its launch.

Starting a coaching business was a novel concept when it started but founder J C Chaudhry ensured that the company stayed relevant to changes and trends in the educational needs of students. In 2006, Aakash Chaudhary, his son, also joined ASEL after graduating from Harvard Business School.

Aakash Educational Services has more than 215 test prep centres, which coach 250,000 high-schoolers and prepare them for the hard-to-crack competitive exams to enter India’s top engineering and medical schools.

When Aakash wanted to expand and was in need of funds, there were plans to go IPO. When the IPO plans took a backseat, Blackstone picked up a 37.5% stake in AESL for $184 million in October 2019, valuing Aakash at $480 million.

Byju’s’s saga of acquisitions

The acquisition of the offline test prep leader Aakash Educational Services by Byju’s to accelerate offline growth is the current hot news in the business circle, particularly in the start-up community. The acquisition will create an online-offline omni-channel synergy to further consolidate Byju’s leadership position in the world’s second-largest internet market and accelerate its offline growth.

India’s online EdTech leader will combine forces with the three-decade-old, Blackstone Group Inc. backed Aakash in a deal that involves about $600 million in cash and the remainder $400 million in stock, according to the sources. Byju’s is an unconventional start-up looking for acquisition which is strategic for inorganic growth, integration, and taming competition.

Previous acquisition deals by Byju’s

So far, without counting Aakash, there have been 5 acquisitions by Byju’s, totalling over $650M. Byju’s recently closed the acquisition of WhiteHat Jr. for $300M. WhiteHat Jr. is an online EdTech firm in Mumbai that specialises in offering coding lessons, and certificates to young students.

Global Expansion: Previously, Osmo was bought out for $120M by Byju’s to accelerate its global expansion dreams by tapping into the niche physical + digital education market for pre-schoolers. It was part of their market penetration strategy; be niche, build vertically, expand across different demographics like the U.S, UK, Indonesia, and Nepal with their product’s proven value proposition and for getting a feel of what digital education customers are like in America and other countries.

However, the most strategic of all the alliances till then, according to me, is the partnership with Disney that Byju’s signed to build learning content integrating Disney’s most iconic characters to form a stronger footprint for younger audiences.

Securing Disney’s hand as the world’s first EdTech investment to package digital education in entertaining methods is a sure-fire way to create goodwill and trust by creating a roadmap for positioning Byju’s in the developed markets where Disney already captivates youngsters.

The big one – The bullish effects of Aakash acquisition by Byju’s

Byju Raveendran had said earlier that he wanted to go public with the IPO at some point. Aakash which almost went public once, has reasonable scale, is a recognized brand in India, and is profitable with over Rs 1,200 crore in revenue and its acquisition would help Byju’s go public successfully in addition to scaling up the business.

“As 12 months of the pandemic have shown, there’s a clear need to disrupt education by combining offline with online, which has low single-digit penetration,” said Byju Raveendran. “The future of learning is hybrid, and bringing students to a nearby offline centre provides rigour, intensity and human touch,” he said while announcing the acquisition. The roadmap to the power of omni channel education delivery is the major strategic reason behind this deal.

Blackstone, which invested $184 million in Aakash in 2019, is cashing out partly but remains invested in the merged entity, Aakash’s Managing Director Aakash Chaudhry said. The private equity firm and Aakash’s founders will exit the venture and become minority shareholders of Byju’s, they said in its release.

Aakash Chaudhry said the combined force of Byju’s and Aakash would start targeting the country’s smaller cities, towns and villages. He said the two firms joining forces will offer “very substantial and value-additive services to students.” Aakash will function as a separate entity and the leadership at Aakash Educational will stay with the firm after the acquisition.

Students who wanted to access physical classrooms have gotten that from Aakash and those who wanted to access content and learn online have been served by Byju’s. Together, the combination will be able to leverage the physical location, technology and online learning to offer students a unique experience and value. For several of Byju’s offerings such as test preparation, Byju Raveendran said, an online-only model is still a few years away.

Amit Dixit, co-head of Asia Acquisitions and head of India Private Equity at Blackstone, said that an “omni channel will be the winning model in test prep and tutoring, and we look forward to being a part of the partnership between the two foremost companies in Indian supplementary education – Aakash and Byju’s.”

Byju Raveendran said his start-up is looking to acquire more firms. It was reported that Byju’s is in talks with California-headquartered start-up Epic to acquire the U.S. start-up for “significantly more than $300 million.”

Jayanth Kolla, chief analyst at consultancy firm Convergence Catalyst, said the acquisition of Aakash will help Byju’s gain more brand recognition and reach more students in more areas in India and more geographies. “Growing fast organically on the web still plateaus after a certain point in a market like India,” he said.

This sounds absolutely true at least for Indian market for some more time but their ambition to penetrate the developed market would be a different ball game where online can be a better winner.

Becoming an iconic company for him is about changing the lives of billions of learners.

The marriage of two leaders in their respective space, online and offline, and synergy of strong leadership would go a long way in bringing more successes for the new Byju’s. This will also help bring more innovative methods and quality of content for the students from K-12 grade to those aspiring for admission for graduate programmes in premier engineering, medical and business schools.

To conclude, Byju’s’s acquisition of Aakash is a very strategic move toward a forward integration and as well as creating an offline-online omni channel educational services delivery. It is forward integration because Byju’s is now majorly a player in the K-12 grade segment whereas Aakash is in the post – K-12 space. The merger can create a scaling up model where Byju’s will feed Aakash with Byju’s students for the post – K-12 level entrance coaching. Most importantly, the power of omni channels to cater to small cities and towns the way the students in those places would like to receive their coaching.

What started as a standard coaching class 14 years back, turned into a ‘decacorn’, world’s highest-valued Edtech company, second most valued start-up in India, first in the consumer internet start-up space to turn profitable (in 8 years), raised $2.48 billion funding till date, 64 million registered user base on its leading K-12 app and so on. But most important of all, it is the company that made us “fall in love with learning”. What is it that this humble start-up Byju’s did to achieve such glory?

Sowing the Learning Seeds: Byju’s First-Mover’s Advantage

Over the years, founder Byju Raveendran has pivoted from being a mechanical

engineer to a teacher to a hard-core technology entrepreneur. Raveendran, who was working with a multinational shipping firm back in early 2000s, had become quite a hit among locals after he helped some of his friends prepare for CAT. Many of them ended up clearing the test with flying colours.

During his next visit, more students approached him for tutorials and the number kept growing till it reached an auditorium of multiple cities. By 2009, Raveendran was pre-recording his lectures and offering to students across 45 cities, milking the Byju’s brand that he had established. In 2011, Raveendran set up a company called Think and Learn to run a multi-city offline coaching class chain for competitive exams that offered classes and course material along with Raveendran’s video lectures, under the brand Byju’s. However, he had curated a team to create learning content for school children in grades six to 12, to tap the opportunity at the right time.

Perfect Timing to Come Online

Finally, the app was launched in 2015 which garnered a massive response from the students with more than 5.5 million downloads in just one year. The company shifted from teaching only for exam-taking classes to teaching students across age groups. This was integral for the brand’s evolution from a test and exam prep teaching model to teaching and learning for students across age groups.

Raveendran saw an opportunity in the K-12 segment and gradually pivoted. Why the company pivoted is credited to the founder’s acumen, in identifying a market and business model that was extremely lucrative.

The app today has a subscription renewal rate of 90%. As per statistics, a subscribed student spends more than an hour on the app every day. The Edtech entrepreneur Raveendran, along with his wife Divya Gokulnath, never started with a business plan in mind, the venture followed its own course.

A Strong Core Offering

There is a certain liking for. the classes on the Byju’s app. They are enjoyable, easily understood and interesting. This is the major selling point as the videos are highly engaging with an amalgamation of animation, gamification, and live-action formats. It is interesting to watch pizza being used to teach complex math problems.

Therefore, the quality of the teaching material, the way of presenting it and the connection built with the students makes Byju’s a preferred choice for its target audience.

What also gives Biju’s an edge over its peers is the personalisation of the teaching material for every student it provides. A rich learning profile is built for each student and the app memorises the student’s learning fingerprint, enabling it to customise and personalise the student’s learning experience. Byju’s personalisation engine mimics the actions of a personal tutor, helping in tackling students’ weaknesses and enabling the students to learn at their own pace.

Everything has been built on this core offering of the company. “If you have a great product, it will sell automatically”.

Having said that, a good product also needs a “business brain” along with a mix of right marketing, right amount of funding and investors, sense of pivoting at the right time and grabbing the right opportunity, to survive and thrive. Byju’s managed to be the shining example of that, of course with certain glitches…

A Favourite of the VC World

Things started coming together for Byju’s as soon as it had launched the app. The company was bootstrapped by Raveendran who had put in over $2,500 from his earnings. Byju’s received its first funding of $9 million in 2013 from Aarin Capital, which is run by Ranjan Pai and Mohandas Pai.

This was followed by the entry of Sequoia Capital in 2015. They liked what they saw – the core content and the pedagogy of the company was strong besides the entrepreneurial spirit and vision of Raveendran, who had already started catalysing product development in the K-12 segment and building a strategy around device learning.

Apart from the right timing, Raveendran’s reputation as an educator worked in his favour in terms of investors’ faith. Later in the same year, it launched the Byju’s app targeting school students, which amassed two million users within a quarter.

2016 was a significant year for Byju’s with a line of investors, including Sequoia, Innoven Capital, Sofina Group, Times Internet and the International Finance Corporation, signing big checks. Byju’s raised four rounds of funding, quickly rising in the valuation charts. The internet boom was at its peak along with smartphone penetration which gave the investors the right proposition. In the same year, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan’s funding arm — Chan Zuckerberg initiative led a $50 million round and boosted the startup’s value to $462 million. This was a stardom moment for Byju’s in the start-up industry.

Vivian Wu, managing partner of Chan Zuckerberg Initiative appreciated the level of engagement from students (average 71 minutes are spent by students on the app) and the company’s research on how parents felt about the app which was reflected by the annual subscription renewal rate of 85%.

By 2017, the company’s growth with 3,00,000 annual paid subscribers helped turn it into a case study in Harvard. Its reported valuation was at $800 million.

In August 2017, it entered the elite group of “unicorns” with over $1 billion valuation. This made global VC firms sit up and take notice of the rapidly growing Edtech market in the world’s second-most populous country.

There was a high adoption and 85% annual renewal came from small towns and cities shows, which had set the vision for Byju’s scope for deeper penetration. There was a huge market.

Later in 2018, Byju’s raised a whopping $540 million round from Naspers Ventures and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board at a $3.6-billion-valuation, it became the world’s most valuable Edtech company besides turning profitable.

The company has hit $12 billion valuation in its recent round of funding of $200 million led by BlackRock and T Rowe Price. What also makes Byju’s investors’ favourite is the company’s usage of capital. In the first five years, the company utilised less than $350 million of the primary capital. Most of the recent fundraising has been utilised to finance inorganic growth. The company never raised money because it needed it, but to add the right propositions.

This is like Sample Sales. Students are allowed to see a sample video or a basic video. If they like the video, they can purchase all videos in bulk (subscription). It is a great method to attract students. Once they get to know how good the app and the content are, they automatically feel the need for subscribing to the paid services.

This reflects what an entrepreneur’s confidence in its product can do. Byju’s has always been confident about the quality of service provided on their platform and never hesitated to fight back. Raveendran knew that his material and presentation had the potential of affecting millions and gaining their attention.

The free service made students understand the quality of teaching provided by Byju’s, which started enrolling a higher number of students for their premium teaching services. The company also launched new products like Byju’s Online Tutoring and other learning programs to boost revenue growth.

It is impertinent to mention here that Byju’s has set its target audience right. Whether it is a student of grade one or a student who is trying to clear entrance examinations such as IAS, CAT, JEE, NEET, BITS, Byju’s has it all. It has chosen its target audience very wisely as it covers every exam which is crucial and trending.

A metric which is generally ignored by VC-backed companies is sales. Byju’s stronger focus on the same has allowed it to race ahead. Hence, the strength of core offering (learning platform) coupled with a deep sales network is Byju’s winning formula.

This assimilation seems to be a movement towards becoming a ‘Super App’ — multitude of offerings that will give students a variety of choices and a complete learning experience — besides expanding the market share in the crowded Edtech space.

Since the beginning, Byju’s has been on a lookout for companies that add strong product components to its existing user base or potential new customers in new markets, or companies that give it some kind of distribution so that it gets a head start to launch in new markets — especially English speaking.

It is making a serious effort in replicating its successful model in the US, UK and South Africa.

Smart Moves: What They Did Right

There are a lot of factors which placed the company at the top of the game. Most companies beginning to launch their Education technology platform have been facing the monopoly of Byju’s Classes. Let’s start from the beginning.

The year 2011-14 was considered as the dark period for the first breed of start-ups who were all hoping to replicate the success story of Coursera. The founder had struck with the offline approach for this very reason. At the same time, he launched a tablet learning program to sidestep the issues with connectivity and devices, and waited for the right time to make his online debut.

Byju’s became the most sought-after platform for students during this pandemic and the company leveraged the same. With schools shutting down during the pandemic, the app offered content free for students, which brought in 30 million new users. The company offered personalised online coaching by introducing live classes that further garnered users.

This increased Byju’s growth estimates to over 200% in 2020. In 2017, Raveendran played another card that proved extremely crucial in bumping up the company’s brand image and valuation – bringing Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan as the brand ambassador. This was a bold move but an extremely smart one.

Analytics comes to the company’s advantage. Byju’s is able to tap into student’s behaviour with Amazon Web Services. The insights have helped Byju’s curate a customised offering for each student.

This was in contrast to Byju’s ‘Feet-on-Street’ marketing strategy in 2018, where the company reached out to individual potential customers in the small cities to pitch-in their products with home-to-home visits. This was an unusual approach for an internet-based company which usually depends on the online platforms to drive sales while tapping into the customer’s data.

This campaign began from the streets of Bengaluru and later extended to the cities of Hubballi, Dharwad and Mysore in Karnataka. Byju’s executives were successful in generating upto 50% conversions through these free counselling sessions.

Byju’s knows what connects the masses — Bollywood and cricket. It’s ‘Keep Learning’ campaign, launched in 2019, shows how the company clearly understands India’s love for cricket and knows how to use it in their favour very well.

Moving forwards, there is looking at an infinite headroom for growth in two extreme corners — small towns and international. Close to 60% of students at Byju’s come from outside the top 10 cities. The company has been laying heavy focus on regional content with its recent partnership with Sudeep Sanjeev to launch their first-ever campaign in a regional language (Kannada). The team has also created two ad-films in Telugu starring movie star Mahesh Babu.

On the other hand, the company is aggressively looking to take its products to the global audiences and is on an acquisition spree to speed up the same.

Building the eponymous edtech company, Byju’s, along with her husband Byju Raveendran, Divya Gokulnath is the one who brings compassion in the board room and takes every decision with a student’s betterment at the heart. “I believe that education is one of the most powerful tools that shapes and moulds the way our youth think,” the first line of Divya’s bio on social media reads. Divya’s belief of “making children fall in love with learning” is changing the way millions think and learn and pursue education.

Making Children Fall In Love With Learning

India has one of the largest school-going populations in the world. Our youth, which is the most valuable asset in a nation’s development, needs to be empowered with right learning opportunities. Though there is a huge improvement over the years in terms of quality education, challenges such as lack of access to quality teachers, lack of personalised learning, learning driven by the fear of exams and a system of rote learning still prevail.

To bridge this gap, Divya connected with her students on a personal level and understood the need to customise the company’s approach for each student. This is the reason why the company has centred its product around the needs of students. Divya clearly understood that the one-size-fit-all approach doesn’t work when you want children to become active and life-long learners.

This is reflected in the company’s teaching style where the focus is to explain the concepts contextually and visually with real-life examples.

Her style in simplifying concepts, be it for the educational materials that Byju’s produces or for presentations she makes, has helped the company excel. She studied at Frank Anthony Public School, and later went to R.V. College of Engineering to pursue her B.Tech in biotechnology. After graduating in 2007, she
decided to take the GRE, an admissions test requirement for graduate schools in the U.S. She had enrolled for Biju’s classes for exam preparation when she was offered the role of a teacher. She aborted her plan to go to the U.S. and started teaching mathematics, English, and logical reasoning for competitive examinations in 2008.

Since then, Byju’s has come a long way, posting revenues of ₹2,800 crore for FY20. Every student’s learning journey is unique and different. Not every student might feel connected to a particular subject. With her unique teaching style, Divya aimed to help students move from fear or exam-based learning to learning based on love and to something that fuels a learner’s curiosity. Today, she juggles multiple roles from content development and teaching to ideation, strategising and investors pitch and continues to transform the way youth approaches learning.

The Indian education system is infamous for being one of the most competitive and stressful times of a student’s life. When you consider all the testing, examinations and the mark-oriented structure that it enforces on its students, it is no wonder why it has garnered such a reputation. In light of such a scenario and the arrival of the NEET exams in 2013, the future of the formal education sector in India looked all but bleak and drove students and concerned parents alike to sink most of their life savings and countless hours into tuition, training and other forms of exam preparation in hopes of giving their child a shot at a better future. So, it is quite the understatement to say that a solution was much needed, and that solution presented itself in the form of BYJU’S, an online learning platform that turned the tide of education and training in the country as we know it.

The Beginnings: Where It All Started

The online learning platform was the brainchild of Byju Raveendran, a former engineer turned CAT (Common Admission Test) tutor. He started this venture after he found his passion for teaching during his time as a tutor where he helped some friends clear their CAT exams. This cultivated his interest in teaching and slowly the frequency and the size of those classes grew. This prompted him to take a better look at the structure of the syllabus and the education sector in its entirety. Upon seeing the severe gap in what was being taught and what was being retained by students, he took it upon himself to do something about this ever-growing distance between education and learning.

BYJU’S was founded in 2011 under its parent company ‘Think and Learn Pvt Ltd’ with a special focus on the K-12 segment (Kindergarten to 12th Standard). Initially, when the platform was launched it was primarily focused on test preparations, which is a far cry from where it stands today with its vast network of teaching staff, multiple scholarship and training programmes and immersive quality-oriented content. Soon after its launch, BYJU’S launched the ‘BYJU’S Learning App’ in 2015 alongside a re-structured syllabus from 6th to 12th grade and better accessibility to experienced teachers to carry the content forward.

Looking at it today, you might have to think twice about putting it into the start-up category as it currently stands at the top of its league in the Edtech sector. The reason for such a large-scale success is the brand’s approach to education dissemination, which puts all the focus on the content rather than the business aspect of the company.

Most Edtech businesses are exactly that, a business before anything else. Yes, the bottom line does matter at the end of the day, but it is not the only way. BYJU’S took the path less travelled and placed education above all else. Despite being a giant in the Edtech industry, education serves as the primary element while the technology is merely the vehicle through which students and teachers understand and share that information.

While adaptive learning is good, necessary even, considering the state of the world in the post-pandemic era and how it has fundamentally altered how we communicate, it is more important that the content being delivered to students is worth their time and energy. Thanks to this way of operating, BYJU’S can compete and even lead the pack by giving students content they can understand and deliver it to them in a fun and engaging way. This improves their levels of information retention and contributes to the learning process rather than relying on the rota system that we have come to know and despise in the Indian education system.

The Core Benefits Of BYJU’S Learning App

The BYJU’S Learning App which was launched in 2015 is a cross-functional online platform more than just an app with a syllabus loaded onto it. The learning prospects cater to two broad categories: exam preparations and grade school subjects for Math and Science related subjects.

In terms of the exam preparations, the students can use the platform to prepare for some of the country’s toughest and most competitive exams like CAT, NEET, IAS, ICSE, CBSE, Government exams and even the State Board exams.

When it comes to the grade school arena, the app covers subjects such as Math, Physics, Chemistry and Biology for classes 4 to 12 with the recent addition of Social Studies for classes 6 to 8.

Additionally, given the fact that many of these topics can be a little daunting to take on your own, the app acts as a platform that connects aspiring students with some of India’s best teachers including Byju Raveendran himself. The lessons and the syllabus are centred around a comprehensive delivery system that is carried out through an approach that combines engaging video lessons with personalised learning methodologies. Each and every student can adapt their learning process as per their preference and pace as the application also offers adaptive practice, revisions and intensive tests to make sure that students actually retain what they learn.

With that said, let us have a look at some of the features that this wonderful app has to offer:

Easy learning and engaging videos

As mentioned above, the diverse range of subjects and the complex concepts are made easy for students to understand by heavily incorporating visual aids in the form of videos. These video lessons can be customised as per the learner’s convenience and pace. This visual forward approach helps in both learning and retention thereby ensuring a higher level of success as opposed to the traditional verbal dissemination and monotonous classroom setting that students have become accustomed to. Apart from the videos, the app also provides learning and testing in the form of fun games and interactive quizzes that stimulate the mind, rather than numb it with lectures that go on for hours on end.

Revision

Repetitive adaptive testing is presented in a fun, gamified form to let students test and reassess their strong and weak points at any point in time. Users can also opt for a chapter-wise test which allows for a compartmentalised understanding of a subject as learners can stop and re-learn a particular chapter that they might find challenging. If they have not understood it, they always have the option to revisit chapters and gain a good understanding of that particular section.

Mapping the learning curve

The application offers a comprehensive analysis of the user’s progress through the learning of any particular subject. It highlights areas of strength and areas where there needs to be improvement through real-time reports. Additionally, the learning curve is mapped relative to the student’s grades and the syllabus in question, be it in the K-12 segment or competitive exams. To help in the mapping and growth curve tracking, each and every chapter is broken down into small and simplified concepts that as a whole make up a comprehensive knowledge pack.

Lesson prompts

As learners make their way through each lesson, there are bound to be mistakes as is commonplace with the process of learning anything. To address this, the BYJU’S Learning App provides lesson prompts that help learners identify and correct their mistakes through the countless practice sessions.

Graphs

With the exception of the earlier mentioned video learning approach, the app has also recently added visualised graphs known as ‘Knowledge Graphs’ which is also accessible through the BYJU’S web portal.

Looping in parents

BYJU’S recognises how invested parents are in their child’s education and they know the lengths parents are willing to go to see their child succeed. That is why BYJU’S introduced a relatively new feature called ‘Parent Connect’ on their learning app. This feature helps parents track and understand what their child is learning, the growth curve they have achieved and the areas that need improvements. All this monitoring and feedback happens in real-time.

Addressing gaps in information

Now the question remains, “What if there is a doubt that cannot be clarified through standardised videos or structured chapters on the platform?” Not to worry, BYJU’S has thought of that as well. Since the platform is already connected with such a vast network of highly-qualified teachers, it recently added a feature for one-on-one mentoring in which teachers can instantly clear any and all doubts that learners may have.

This also has the added benefit of learners getting personalised guidance on a subject from a dedicated mentor.

With all these features in-tow, the app stands as a strong and reliable platform on which students can gain a foothold for their future. Beyond all these digitally enhanced features the syllabus side of things stands just as strong. BYJU’S provides a wide range of free study materials, the latest in question papers and even aids in preparing students for school level exams and classroom projects (relative to the subject of course).

The app which was launched in June of 2019 was a project done in collaboration with Disney India. This sub-platform makes use of the beloved Disney characters as vehicles to reach and pique the interest of young children. With the aid of thousands of animated videos, games, stories, interactive quizzes and experimental/workable study sheets, it gears young children up for the trials of student life down the road.

Other Noteworthy Qualities

Something that makes BYJU’S so attractive to such a large audience of parents and students is the freemium approach of the platform. This makes it a very democratised and accessible medium for everyone, whether they want to just try it out and experiment or if they are thinking of investing a considerable amount of time training and preparing through the apps or platform.

For learners who wish to delve deep into the features and benefits that BYJU’s has to offer there is a membership fee that is charged in the form of annual ticket packages which amount to roughly Rs 24,000 a year for class 4 to 10 student and anywhere up to Rs 160,000 for class 11 and 12 competitive exam packages.

Though it may seem high at first glance, it is actually less than the average cost parents spend on tuition classes and with double the results as per their stellar track record. The proof is in the pudding as they say. The BYJU’S learning app itself has been downloaded over 50 million times since its launch.

Another good sign that this platform lives up to the hype is the investors it has backing its venture. Some of the biggest names like General Atlantic, Tiger Global Management, Sequoia Capital India and even the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative have stepped up to the plate and invested a total of $ 2.48 Billion, bringing the total valuation of the company to $ 12 Billion.

Having said that, the most noteworthy aspect of the BYJU’S platform is not the clout, the funding or even the massive growth it has seen over such a short period. It is the fact that despite it being relatively new to the game, it was able to penetrate the Indian Edtech sector like no other before it. The reason behind that is the focus of the brand, which is giving students a chance at an affordable course that prepares them for the gauntlet of exams that the Indian education system will throw at them and helping them rediscover a love of learning that traditional schooling has all but crushed. This just goes to show, there is no compromise when it comes to a quality education and it is for this reason that the BYJU’S platform stands as one of, if not the largest platforms in India today.

For more inspiring stories like this, do check out our Inspire section.
