This new behaviour is paving the market of nutraceuticals, herbceuticals, immunity-boosting supplements of both domestic and non-domestic brands. Amidst India’s, unorganised and fragmented pharmacy retails these modern retail pharmacy chains are expected to grow steadily, have low business risk and deliver good returns. Its bullish nature can be owed to the company’s efforts to reduce debt consistently. Moreover, the increasing FII holding has helped the stock. As of June 2021, the promoters held a 74.7 percent stake in the company against FIIs 5.9 percent. With oil and crude prices surging, an increased focus on cleaner energy solutions will add more gains to its stock. JSW Energy shares have recently scaled new highs after the company’s arm signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).

Considering the timeline from the start of 2021 the stock prices have grown from Rs 6.15 to Rs 16.60 – clocking around 170 percent. Here is how the conglomerates have been going with the stakes.
Reliance Retail has acquired a 52 percent stake in the luxury fashion brand Ritu Kumar which was its second investment within a week after acquiring a 40 percent minority stake in Manish Malhotra.
Equally wanting to firm its claws in the luxury and retail segment, Aditya Birla Fashion Retail Limited (ABFRL) in January 2021 took a 51 percent stake in bridal couture brand Sabyasachi followed by a 33 percent ownership in Tarun Tahiliani’s men’s ethnic wear range. Back in 2019, the retail conglomerate had acquired Finesse – an apparel brand from Shantanu and Nikhil.

This puts forward a question what is luring the conglomerates to own stakes in the luxury and retail industry?

Ethnic wear market: no more a blindspot for retail biggies

The total Indian ethnic wear market has a size of Rs 70,000 crore, according to Technopak in which almost 80-90 percent of the market is unorganised. Given its unorganised nature, several conglomerates found the ethnic wear market a tough nut to crack. But, in the past decade ethnic wear brands like W, Aurelia, Fab India, and Biba have changed the narrative by introducing an organised format. Today, the above mentioned have carved a niche for themselves by becoming Rs 1000 crore brands and have revealed the potential of the organised ethnic market to catch the eye of these majors.

Moreover, what makes it deliver profits, in the long run, is its strong resilience to apparel cycle fluctuations. As compared to western wear Indian traditional outfits such as sarees, kurtas, lehenga cholis, sherwanis, Kurtis, etc are hard to go obsolete in styles and are least impacted by global brands.

Aspiration for better lifestyles and high purchase power is also driving the migration of buyers from the unorganised to organised retail in tier II and tier IV market and the increased shopping from the e-commerce only brands.

Reliance retail under the brand Trends is its economic range. With its recent initiative to introduce its new brand Avantra, it wants to target the mid-premium ethnic wear category and with the recent stake in Manish Malhotra and Ritu Kumar, it will foray into the luxury segment. On similar lines, Aditya Birla with Pantaloons is now targeting the premium segments by owning stakes in Tarun Tahiliani and Sabyasachi.

Entering into the luxury and retail segment

The preventive measures to contain has impacted these luxury brands causing their businesses to shrink by 30-35 percent and therefore needed funds to stay afloat. This is where the luxury brands and the conglomerates formed a symbiotic relationship as now the brands will now be available at lower valuations. As India accelerates its vaccination rate the restriction on weddings and festivities will be eased and is expected to bounce back and grow by 20 percent in the coming 4-5 years.

There was an air of excitement in the Dalal Street since, the stock market this time welcomed an online food aggregator platform’s IPO launch, which was one of its kind.

Following Zomato’s suit, Pepperfry – an online furniture marketplace plans to file for an initial public offering (IPO) in June 2022, and complete the pre-IPO funding round by the end of this year.

Like many other businesses, the wrath of the subsequent lockdowns and pandemic was no stranger to Pepperfry. With most corporates adapting to a virtual workforce, it expected a bleak in its business but to its surprise, profits and sales began flowing with the recent virtual lifestyle making the furniture company inch closer to its IPO launch and unicorn dream.

The IPO dream and profitability in the pandemic

Any company to launch its IPO needs to give consistent profits. SEBI ( Securities and Exchange Board of India) expects companies to have a track record of profits distributed for three out of the immediately preceding five years.
The profitability of Pepperfry resulted due to an increased demand for chairs, laptop tables, study tables as the makeshift offices and schools at home began growing. Its chair sales grew by 250 percent y-o-y and study table sales grew by 400 percent in August 2020, thereby contributing 25 percent to its overall sales.

Also, the shift in consumer behaviour from offline to online purchases, resulted in Pepperfry’s online purchases locking profits upto 120 percent of pre-lockdown levels by Aug-Sept 2020. The online furniture marketplace also witnessed first-time buyers that were more in numbers than the repeat buyers from Tier-2 cities.

Besides furniture, consumers these days are spending a significant time indoors and are thereby demanding mattresses, cushions, and bean bags that deliver adequate comfort while resting, sleeping, and working. Catering to this new behaviour, Pepperfry launched its mattress brand Clouddio that began contributing around 35 percent to its overall business just after its 6-month launch.

After experiencing the products at the stores, customers can order online. Once customers can visualise the products using VR and benefit from it, will elevate their confidence in Pepperfry’s offerings thus driving its sales.
Moreover, Pepperfry is changing its approach to modular business by standardising the customer experience at its new modular centres in cities of Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai, etc. The online furniture marketplace has plans to build 200 offline studios based on the FOFO model ( Franchise owned, franchise-operated) to penetrate into Tier-II and Tier-III cities in India.

Investing in Pepperfry’s IPO – a good deal for investors?

Whether investing in Pepperfry’s IPO will be lucrative or not is too early to say since the IPO is to be launched in June 2022. The company is largely focussing on growth and ramping up its offline presence by expanding its experiential stores in metros and smaller cities. The online furniture company registered a 26 percent increase in revenue to Rs 260.6 crore and has trimmed losses by 33 percent to Rs 122 crore in 2019-20. But, here investors need to take cognisance of the business vertical they are operating in.

Against the overall furniture sales that touched $700 million in 2019-20 the online furniture purchase had less than 3 percent share according to RedSeer Consulting. In addition to this, furniture purchase online is largely a metro consumer phenomenon and in India, it is largely an unorganised market, people yet like to purchase it from local carpenters. Although, Pepperfry has ambitious expansion plans to cover small Indian cities and can drive sales if hiring and employment increases since furniture is a non-essential category. There can be green shoots for the Pepperfry if offices again open up since India has now reached the 100 crore vaccination mark.

In addition to this, one must keep a tab on inflation and interest rates, Fed reserve policies and growth rates across geographies since these factors influence the currency movements.

The next step after understanding the business will be now to recognise the company’s growth opportunities and its capacity to capture the market share. An investor should avoid investing in IPOs if the business activities lack the clarity to an investor.

Recognise the risk: Risks are inevitable while trading. Understanding the risk associated with the company is an important factor that should be considered. The current market scenario, its competitors, quality of products and services, liabilities including the contingent ones should be thoroughly analysed to decode any potential risks associated with the company. Such details are available from the company prospectus.

Financial Health of the company: The financial health of the company should be assessed with its revenues and profits being consistent over the past few years. If the revenues and profits are showing an upward trajectory, then it is a green signal for investment. One should also check the valuations, since offer price can be undervalued, fairly valued, or overvalued depending on the industry parameters and profitability ratios.

Always read the DRHP: DRHP (Draft Red Herring Prospectus) is filed by a company to SEBI when it intends to raise funds from the company by selling shares of the investors. The prospectus elaborates how the company intends to use the money that will be raised, and the possible risks for investors. Thus, investors must go through the DRHP before investing in an IPO.

Study the strength and weaknesses: Investors can figure out the key positives of the company from the DRHP. One should try to find the company’s position in the industry in which it operates, it is positioning, and strategies. By reading this, one can find more about the company’s prospects.

The utilisation of the proceeds: An investor needs to check that how the funds from the IPO raised will be used. If the purpose of utilising the funds is to repay the debts, then the investment is not lucrative. But, if the purpose is to repay the debts and expand the business or utilise it for general corporate purposes then it shows that the funds will flow into the business making it a good share to invest.

Final word for investors

For investing in stocks, mutual funds, or IPO companies, investors first need to understand their financial goals. A wise investor should not make haste in investment decisions based on the market hype, publicity, and peer recommendation of someone else. Investors should do their research. If one can see future growth and potential in the company, then one should consider investing in its IPO.

Let us dig a little deeper to understand what sport price is and its mechanism.

What is the spot price?

A spot price is the current price of a security, or asset that can be bought or purchased at a particular place and time. The price holds more importance in the derivative markets since it acts as a based indicator for pricing a futures contract and represents the market expectations of a security’s future price. Moreover, it helps traders/investors to estimate the future price movement of stocks.

To understand spot pricing better, let us look at an example.

Say, we have a shop that sells sugarcane juice. For each glass of sugarcane juice, he charges Rs 15. The juice seller normally purchases sugarcane from the farmer at Rs 8 per cane. But, since his shop’s operations are expanding and the price of sugarcane has been volatile due to irregular rains hampering its production the juice seller goes for a future contract for sugarcane. The contract states that 100 sugarcane will be delivered next month and the juice seller needs to pay Rs 6.5 per cane to enter the contract. In this case, the spot price will be Rs 8 since this is the price that the juice seller will pay to get the sugarcane immediately.

The spot price is affected by the supply and demand of the underlying commodity or asset.

Let us dig deeper to know what are circuit limits and how are they of use to investors

What is a circuit limit?

A circuit limit or circuit breaker are limits that restrict the movement of indices or stock prices of a certain index on a particular day. In simpler terms, there will be no trading of indices if it goes above the set upper limit and falls below the defined lower limit, trading is paused at that time. It is a tool to protect the interest of investors that curbs extreme price movement, speculation, and market volatility with the sudden emergence of any positive or negative news resulting in panic buying or selling of shares.

These limits are based on the previous day’s closing price.

Circuit limits are defined by SEBI that are revised every day. Similar to circuit limits, stock prices have price band limits to control pricing. There are no limits set for the companies launching their IPOs.

Why circuit limits are placed?

The malpractices committed by Ketan Parekh forced SEBI to implement index-based market-wide circuit limits with immediate effect from 2nd July 2001. News and information whether positive or negative have a profound impact on the movement of indices. Any time of the trading day if news of the government’s new policy, any civic unrest, or war arises, it can result in high market volatility and panic sell or purchase of shares. Since, retail investors are almost always the last to react to the news, in case of a sudden market swing they will not have adequate time to exit the trade thereby, incurring significant losses. Let us imagine a scenario where there are no circuit limits and an investor has bought stocks of a fertiliser company priced at Rs 200 five years back. The same stock is currently trading at Rs 1000 but due to the government’s decision to refrain from the usage of Urea in fertiliser, the stock falls back sharply to Rs 100 or even lower, resulting in heavy losses for the investor. A lower limit here could have cushioned the losses.

The upper limit ensures that a stock price does not rise sharply and the lower limit restricts the stock prices to go lower.

How limits work for the Indian stock markets

The circuit limit system of the Indian exchanges is applied at three stages of the index movement. The limits are set at 10%, 15%, and 20%. When a stock falls or increases by 10%, 15%, or 20% the trading is halted at that moment and remains paused until it resumes to the normal trading range. The limits also pause the trading in all equity and derivative markets. It is generally applied if either the BSE Sensex or Nifty 50 breaches the limits. When a stock hits an upper circuit there are only buyers present and while hitting the lower circuit there are only sellers present. Limits also differ from market to market for example in the US markets limits are set upto 7%, 13%, and 20%.

The duration of the halt after hitting the limits

The lower limit comprises of sellers only and the higher limit has buyers only, as long as there is no balance of sellers or buyers no trade is possible. Therefore, the halt is imposed until buyers and sellers are available for the trade to take place

The halt depends on the number of times a stock breaches the limits and the number of times it falls. Trading can halt for as short as 15 minutes to the whole day. Here is a table that shows halt times against breaching of limits.

Not just limited to digital payments and sanctioning loans, fintech has extended its ambit to stock trading and investment. Stock trading and investment have long been perceived as a domain of subject experts. It was meant for those individuals who understood the complexities of stocks, currencies, etc. By saying this, it is not a denial that the stock market is not complex, but with the advent of fintech and the use of computer programmes in stock market trading also known as algorithmic trading, investment has become easier.

What is algorithmic trading?

Algorithmic trading uses computer programming to follow a predefined set of instructions for buying and selling securities. The said instructions are based on timing, price, quantity, or any mathematical model. It can generate profits speedily with a frequency that cannot be matched by a human trader.

Such automated trading was introduced in India by SEBI who first allowed direct market access facility to institutional clients. The direct market access facility allows brokers to provide their infrastructure to clients and give them access to the exchange trading system without any intervention from their part. This facility reduced costs and helped investors to skip the time invested in routing the order to the broker and issuing necessary trade instructions.

Why use algorithm trading?

Since algorithms are written beforehand and executed automatically, the main advantage is speed. Besides that, algorithmic trading provides the following benefits:

Convenient buying and selling of securities without letting emotions or assumptions interfere to realise profits or cutting losses.

One does not need to be present physically for trading securities. It is a low maintenance process where we can set our algorithms up and let them trade around the schedule, 24 hours, day or night.

The algorithms can be backtested and refined more against the historical data to confirm if it is a viable trading strategy and find the best combination of parameters to buy or sell.

Algorithms can be finely adjusted in a trading strategy to implement stop losses and limits.

Reduce risks of manual errors while buying or selling stocks.

The investor has the freedom to choose or create an algorithm according to the strategy, thereby maximising exposure to opportunities in the underlying market.

Through algorithmic trading can be timed correctly to prevent significant price shocks.

How does algorithm trading work?

Say, we might face a golden cross and death cross scenario where we feed instructions to the programme to purchase 100 shares of a stock when the 50-day moving average moves above the 200-day moving average and sell the securities as soon as the 50-day moving average goes below the 200-day moving average.

Using this set of two instructions, a computer programme can be written that will automatically monitor the stock price, and based on the commands given the automated trading can place the buy or sell stocks when the defined conditions are met. The investor does not need to be present physically to monitor the live prices and graphs or sell and buy shares by itself. The algorithm does its work for the investor or trader efficiently.

Top three strategies to sell and buy stocks using algorithmic trading

Here are the strategies where algorithmic trading benefits the investor:

Trend identification

Algorithmic strategies can help to decode a trend or early reversal of it. The strategies in algorithmic trading are based on price, volume, support, resistance, moving averages, and other technical indicators. These are the simplest strategies to implement since these strategies do not require any predictions or price forecasts. Trades take place based on desirable trends that are straightforward to programme using algorithms without needing to go into predictive analysis.

Position sizing

In stock market trading position management is crucial. How well one can manage its position is what differentiates an ordinary investor from a good one. Algorithmic trading has made position sizing easier since it does not have emotions and will execute the trade as per the pre-defined instructions set on the system. For instance, one can pre-decide the value of each trade to be not more than Rs 2 lakh. If the price of a share is Rs 400 the algorithm will automatically purchase 500 shares, and if the price is Rs 1000 then the system will buy 200 shares. This results in purchasing each stock of the same value irrespective of any bias towards any stock.

Stop-loss control

We are aware of market uncertainties, hence we apply stop-loss to insulate from massive losses and manage the portfolios better. Algorithmic trading helps in modifying stop losses since markets are unpredictable. Putting stop-losses becomes a cumbersome task if the portfolio is large. Algorithms provide a convenient way to manage risk, where it can be fitted with strategies that change stop-losses on the movement of the stock in the portfolio. Any stop-losses be it trailing stop or 2% can be fitted with the algorithm.

For instance, we are putting a trailing stop loss at 3% on every position and stop-loss price changes on the positive movement of the stock. We feed this information into the algorithm that changes the price automatically. Suppose, initially if the price of a stock is Rs 100 then the stop-loss price is Rs 97, if the stock price increases to Rs 103 then stop loss becomes Rs 100, in this case, this continues until it reaches the point where stock price goes below 3% it automatically sells the stocks to help you safely exit from the trade.

Word of advice for the investors

Before plunging into algorithm trading there are few things that one needs to know:

Knowledge of the programming language is required, since formulating these algorithms requires sound knowledge of languages such as C+, C++, Java, Python, etc. This calls for a strong programming foundation.

Faulty algorithms have the potential to give unsurmountable losses for the trader. Recently, a company named Knight Capital launched a new algorithmic trading software which lost 10 pounds every minute due to a rogue algorithm, by the time the company wrapped its business it lost a massive 440 million pounds.

Lastly, it must be noted that not all algorithms work effectively in different market conditions.

Shares traded by investors do not affect the floating stock because this does not reflect any change in the restricted and closely-held shares.

The formula for Calculating Floating Stock

The outstanding shares of a company do not always signify the floating stock amount. The subsequent formula can be used to obtain the floating stock value:

Floating Stock = Outstanding Shares – {Restricted Shares + Institution-owned Shares + ESOPs}

Here,

Limited shares are non-transferable until the lock-up days after the initial public offering (IPO) is over. The shares are non-transferable.

ESOP is an employee stock holding policy in a corporation through which the workers get an ownership interest.

Significance of floating stock

The number of floating stocks determines the liquidity and volatility of the share. Small-cap companies, i.e., companies with a low number of shares available, have low floating stocks. Sellers or buyers for these stocks are not easy to find because fewer stocks are available to trade. Therefore, small float stocks tend to have more variations than larger ones.

A company’s free-floating stock changes over time. If a company sells more shares to raise more capital, the free float will increase. Conversely, if the company buys back the remaining shares, the free float percentage rate will fall.

A high percentage of floating stock represents fewer controlled shares. In such a case, stocks are less prone to the influence of institutions, management, or insiders who have confidential control.

A large number of floating stocks means more shares are available for public trading. Therefore, this facilitates buying and selling and attracts many investors. Institutional investors want to invest in large stocks in highly liquid companies. However, these significant acquisitions do not have a significant impact on the share price.

The stock prices of companies with substantial floating stocks are susceptible to company or industry news information. This volatility and liquidity provide more opportunities to buy and sell stocks in the market.

Limitations

Investors in small floating stocks companies are limited because insufficient stock prevents investors from investing. No matter the company’s business ability, this lack of stocks availability certainly hinders the opportunity to expand its investor pool.

The company may issue additional shares to increase the floating stock, even if no additional capital needs to be raised. This measure, however, may cause the share price to fall due to dilution, which will have a significant impact on existing shareholders.

Impact of floating stocks

A free float does not directly affect individual investors, especially those who invest in mutual funds, ETFs, and other securities. It also has no direct impact on investors investing in the company’s shares in the long run.

This is because the stock’s efficiency can be significantly improved by reducing the variable float stock. So, in that situation, it is the marketer’s responsibility to correctly assess the company’s future, its vision, performance, growth, and more such aspects.

However, low floating stocks directly impact investors who often buy and sell stocks as the value fluctuates a lot in the short term. In addition, when the size of the float decreases, investors may face the problem of lack of funds, which worsens the overall problem. Hence, if you are a short-term trader, it is not recommended to choose low float stocks; you may end up selling them at a lesser price when you invest in low stock floats.
