The Grand Slam organisers reacted strongly when Naomi Osaka prioritised her mental health by refusing to speak to the media after her first match at Roland Garros. While the world lauded her move, the reaction from Grand Slam organisers resulted in a ban of playing in the future tournament and a $15000 fine.
Naomi Osaka suffering bouts of depression was heard globally since she was a sportsperson. Imagine the fate of those where mental illnesses form a large part of the pie and yet remain understated. People with mental illness are not aware if they need to seek any medical help and live with it. In India, a national mental health survey revealed that approximately 10 percent of adults showcase symptoms of mental health conditions ranging from anxiety-related illnesses to severe mental trauma. A Lancet study estimated that a massive 197.3 million had mental disorders in 2017, including 45.7 million people with depressive disorders and 44.9 million disorders. In 2019, an average of 381 deaths were reported. The outbreak of Covid-19 exacerbated the problem of mental illness that resulted in a massive jump of 367 percent in mental health queries, with most coming from rural India
Unfortunately, the lack of mental health experts and awareness about keeping a healthy mind has kept mental illness unaddressed for a long in India.

The disparity and lack of mental health experts

The ratio of mental health experts available per patient is highly staggered. There are 9000 psychiatrists in India with around 700 psychiatrists graduating every year, so the ratio becomes 0.75 psychiatrists per 100,000 people, this ratio is far from a minimum of 3 psychiatrists per 100,000 people. Besides this, there is a huge imbalance in the availability of psychiatrists and psychologists. States like Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu have a high number of post-graduate training institutes in psychiatry whereas in states like Chhattisgarh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram where there is not even a single training institute. From this, it is evident that there lies a huge disparity in doctors and a large part of rural and semi-urban India remains underserved in mental health.

The NTMP will be launched as an open platform that will consist of digital registries of health providers and health facilities, unique health identity, and universal access to health facilities thus building stronger health systems. Can this boost the mental wellness startups now?

Can mental wellness startups scale now?

Mental wellness startups face hardships while securing funding from investors. According to the data provided by the industry tracker, Traxcn Indian mental health startups have raised only $20 million between 2016 and 2020. Investors, in general, have shown reluctance in funding such startups as they doubted the market size and the small number of qualified professionals in the sector, and the stigma associated with mental health issues due to which the startups found it tough to scale.
The paucity of healthcare experts can be bridged by these telehealth centres associating with mental wellness startups. Since such internet-driven ecosystems will enable users to find experts that best align with their requirements.

The glaring need for mental wellness in sportspersons came to the forefront when four-time grand slam winner Naomi Osaka, refused to appear in French Open’s post-tennis match conference. Facing pinching questions from the media, exhausted her that made her suffer through long bouts of depression. Sachin Tendulkar, in his 24-year long cricket career, too battled with anxiety issues for 10-12 years and dealt with many sleepless nights before matches.

For the audience or spectators, this might not seem to be a big deal due to their preconceived notion that sportspersons are celebrities. For them, handling anxiety and stress should be an innate quality, but in reality, it is different.

A sportsperson’s career progression undergoes multiple ups and downs. The constant pressure of performing well and being on top takes a toll on a player’s mental wellbeing. It just takes a failure in one or two match events where people begin to criticise a player’s competence and develop a negative atmosphere driven by public-led judgments and opinions for a player’s retirement.

Considering the mental wellbeing of an athlete to be paramount before such high-voltage sporting events, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), has announced its partnership with Dhyana, a meditation-tracking start-up for the mental wellbeing of its athletes for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. With this partnership, India has become the first country to do so.

Why was this partnership with Dhyana necessary?

The Indian Olympic Association felt it was necessary to prioritise mental wellness, improve focus, productivity and help players achieve their mindfulness goals amidst the ongoing pandemic.

Why was Dhyana Chosen?

In 2018, the International Olympic Committee summit in Lausanne raised concerns about the importance of mental wellness in sports. India has a rich heritage of yoga and meditation and the Indian Olympic Association recognised the need for mental wellness and decided to opt for a mental wellness solution that amalgamates technology with traditional yoga and meditation. Hence, Dhyana becomes the first official device to be used at the Olympics.

How was Dhyana Chosen?

Dhyana is the brainchild of India’s badminton legend Pullela Gopichand and Oxford University alumnus Bhairav Shankar. The Indian Olympic Association has acquired Dhyana’s health management services for the entire Indian contingent.

Dhyana might have been chosen owing to the credibility of its founder Pullela Gopichand who has been a successful coach to give India, Olympic medallists like PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, and other players like Sai Praneeth and Parupalli Kashyap, winners of coveted International badminton titles.

How is Dhyana Intended to Provide Mental Wellness?

Dhyana has introduced rings, a wearable device that is capable of measuring ‘mindful minutes’, or the amount of time a person is focusing during a meditation session. The rings work by tracking a person’s Heart Rate Variability (HRV), or the gap in between two consecutive heartbeats, which is further broken down into the three fundamentals of every meditation session – the quality of breathing, focus and relaxation.

Dhyana’s rings provide bio-feedback to give a measurable and scientific way of tackling stress, increase focus and build a positive state of mind through the power of meditation.

What Lies Ahead for the Future of Mental Wellness Platforms in Sports?

Stress and anxiety are major hurdles that tend to impede a player’s performance. Mental wellness apps and devices in Indian sports are yet in their infancy in India.

But, there lies a potential market for data-driven mental wellbeing solutions which will be beneficial not only for Olympic athletes but cricket players as well. The mental wellness solutions also stand a chance to offer their services to grassroots levels of sports for players competing in national levels or state levels, this will aid young players to tackle anxiety and stress at an early stage and perform better in the future.

Although McAfee’s suicide was due to his run from US authorities on fraud charges, there are numerous instances of business tycoons especially in India who have lost their lives due to circumstances around their professional lives and finances.

What leads a successful business owner to suicide?

The lifestyle led by entrepreneurs is a precarious one that often clashes with their personal, professional life, as well as the business and political environment around them. There are many reasons that lead to successful business owners committing suicide including extreme outliers of the profession, stress, failure, competition, time away from loved ones and family, less social life, less sleep, and more recently business crashes mostly recently due to the pandemic and lockdowns.

The first factor that determines whether setting up a business somewhere is healthy or not is how far the local governing bodies and state departments are willing to encourage investments and entrepreneurship.

There was a sudden mistrust and hostility regarding business ownership in India especially around Swiss Bank accounts, and income tax returns. A lot of business owners suffered from unnecessary raids, harassment and extortions from malicious entities who are in power. This affects the mental health of entrepreneurs since they are perceived as greedy or distrustful by their own employees and peers. If the business environment is not conducive in this manner, it can affect daily operations. In fact, the state of Kerala has seen a number of entrepreneur suicides in the last 3 years due to this very reason. It ranks on the 28th spot in India’s investor friendly states out of 29 Indian states.

Entrepreneurs who lost their lives to suicide

CCD VG Siddhartha

VG Siddhartha established a coffee empire in the country at a time when a youth centric Starbucks style coffee shop cum cybercafé was a novelty. He paved the way for a modern hangout spot for Indian youth centred around delicious brews that were sourced from his own coffee plantations. But unknown to the public eye, Café Coffee Day’s V G Siddhartha was embroiled in a deep financial crisis, mounting debts, that led to an eventual downward spiral of the thriving entrepreneur. There are speculations that he was crushed under the intense stress and pressure coming from Private Equity investors and the tax departments.

Vineet Whig

Vineet Whig, the Chief Operating Officer of Encyclopaedia Britannica, a publisher of the online Encyclopaedia committed suicide in 2016 when he cited depression as the reason in a suicide note. His family said that he was an inspirational soul whose loss is irreparable in their lives.

Joy Arakkal

A more recent suicide is that of Joy Arakkal, a Dubai based businessman from Kerala who was the Managing Director of the ‘Innova Group of Companies’ in the UAE. He was a magnanimous person who involved himself in numerous charitable projects. However, Joy Arakkal embraced death to escape the financial woes that he faced in relation to his business.

Other notable entrepreneurs who died by suicide include Raj Travels’ owner Lalit Sheth, Ilya Zhitomirskiy, a Russian American entrepreneur and Mike Alfred, Founder and CEO of Cambrian Genomic.

Small businesses have been the worst affected and the mental health of their founders could not sustain the absolute destruction of their livelihoods. Business reasons are the biggest contributor of suicide rates in India. The State of Karnataka stood in the 3rd spot in 2019 in suicides among businesspeople.

There needs to be a sense of ownership among the small business and start-up ecosystem in India regarding mental health of entrepreneurs. Suicide risk is high in the business fraternity and owners need to guard against mental health impact of starting a business. Mental health start-ups need to cater to entrepreneurs. Until the social and political constructs are kinder to businessmen and women, the onus is on the founder, his kin, and well-wishers to prioritise mental well-being and safety measures to protect the company as well as your personal life from loss and devastation.

Gender and caste-based violence doesn’t seem to be ebbing and Indians are showing their worst side during lockdowns by way of domestic violence and abuse. As such, there is a need to step up access to mental health especially in remote areas for vulnerable sections of society. Mental health start-ups are seeing huge demand, and many are disrupting a space which has unfortunately remained nascent for too long.

What is a mental health start-up?

A mental health start-up is a company that is incorporated for the sole purpose of raising awareness around mental health issues. It provides a platform or services that initiate the right conversations among the target consumers, mostly youth. But the main goal of a mental health start-up is to provide access to reliable information and support around the problem it’s trying to solve.

What problem does it solve?

Mental illnesses lie around a spectrum and have become commonplace due to the kind of lifestyles that are rampant in today’s world. A start-up may try to solve a range of issues, most commonly depression and anxiety. Access to professional help is a major problem to be solved in this space. Mental health challenges are widespread, and the scope of the problem is large.

The boom in mental health start-ups

The biggest challenge around access to mental health in India is the stigma around seeking professional help. A lot of people struggle in isolation due the lack of access, and inadequacy of mental health facilities in their vicinity. Our country is suffering due to the severe paucity of professionals. It’s still seen as a luxury availed by the upper class since the ratio of professionals vs. countrymen is 1 to 100,000.

Anonymity – A big factor in their success

People need a safe space to talk about issues that are affecting their mental health. An online, anonymous platform is the best way they can do this which has contributed to the stellar success of start-ups. There is a need for anonymous conversations with trained, empathetic listeners online and start-ups providing this service have seen a massive volume in their app downloads or website traffic.

How did the need arise – Were we always this crooked?

As per statistics, 1 in every 5 Indians are susceptible to depression, and 150 million Indians who need immediate interventions are unable to avail them. Whereas in the private sector, about 42-46% of employees suffer from general anxiety, depression, and extreme stress.

Even with the increased conversations around mental health, it was astonishing how the true face of India’s toxic environments were unleashed during the pandemic. Many people, especially women, suddenly felt imprisoned in hostile domestic environments. While gender-based and caste-based violence and abuse in the home front were already present, the intensity of abusive circumstances came to the fore during the pandemic. The need for start-ups was always present but the need for its urgent access was validated during this time. Due to the end of physical mental health forums, the demand for online services increased.

You may need to self-fund the company and work in the bootstrapped mode initially if you are starting as a not-for-profit. In terms of pricing, keep the services affordable so that you can target institutions, corporates, schools, and colleges with customised solutions. You may also need to rely on donations, although donations received are free from taxation for non-profit organisations.

The scope for digital mental health platforms is large under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. In terms of products, self-help digital and wellness tools, or remote counselling services work very well for start-ups. In terms of your target market, the scope is diverse. You can offer your services to niche markets like housewives, medical professionals and Covid frontline workers, adolescents, the LGBTQIA+ community, people suffering from illnesses like Psoriasis that give rise to mental health conditions, the elderly who live in solitude, sexual abuse and rape victims etc.

For far too long, dental offices have struggled with having to juggle between multiple, complex and fragmented solutions.

The dental healthcare and wellness space has real needs in terms of maximising insurance reimbursements and patient payments. Health tech and B2B SaaS start-ups need to have significant capital at hand to venture into the dental space. However, the dental market is fragmented and has strong underlying demand drivers. The dental sector is one of the most complex sectors in healthcare. To build software workflows for such an industry, you need to get up close and personal to understand its nuances. Workflows and SOPs vary depending on the market. Dental practices vary from one market to the other.

Dental health is one of the most ignored areas in the Indian healthcare system. Indians refrain from approaching dental clinics fearing costs. There is also a shortage of dental workforce in the country. There is huge potential for dental health start-ups in India as CareStack has already demonstrated. The domestic market itself is huge since the demand is strong for dental tech among solo dental practitioners, individual clinics, as well as dental care groups.

She has to undergo an urgent dental surgery but her insurance won’t cover the cost of treatment.

While looking for options to undergo the procedure outside the United States, she comes across Fortis Hospitals’ Maxillofacial Surgery marketing campaign online. The hospital is offering a visa, stay and treatment package which is 50% lower than the expenses she will incur in the United States. However, Katie will need to travel to India which she can also afford. The only problem is regarding the ongoing second wave of Covid-19 in India and she is a little concerned about her safety during her travel and stay in India. She contacts the hospital who assure her of safe travel and even offer her an upgrade so that she can be rest assured of being safe throughout her medical trip to India.

What is Medical Tourism?

Medical Tourism is the travelling of residents from their home country abroad to undergo advanced treatments and procedures that are either unavailable or not cost effective in their home country. It’s an opportunity for travel and tourism activities where patients can take advantage of their visit to a different country for a supposed ‘medical getaway’ or holiday.

Healthcare institutions and hospitals specifically cater to the medical travellers by offering admission cum accommodation packages. Special in-house hotel rooms are provided to these medical travellers to give them an opportunity to explore their surroundings alongside their scheduled appointments.

India’s key healthcare players are contributing to its growth

Fortis Hospitals India is one of the top contenders on the list of Medical Tourism Manufacturers across the globe who will contribute to the growth. Fortis at Bannerghatta, Bengaluru got an international certification in 2016 for being the country’s go-to destination for Medical Tourism.

Currently it’s the biggest healthcare player in the Indian medical Tourism sector alongside Apollo Hospitals, Manipal Hospitals, Narayana Health (famous for heart procedures).

Apollo Hospitals at Hyderabad, Telangana recently received the JCI (Joint Commission International) Accreditation for Medical Tourism.

Popular Medical Tourism Treatments

Every year, scores of patients from across the globe flock to prime medical tourism locations especially in India to avail state-of-the-art expertise from top-notch facilities. Popular treatments include:

Fertility Treatments

Cosmetic Surgery like Hair Transplant and Breast Augmentation

Dental Surgery

Oncology Treatments

Medical Tourism in India – Scope

Medical Travellers from countries like the USA prefer to travel to developing countries like India due to the low treatment cost for major surgeries like Hip and Knee Replacements.

Asian countries are now the top destinations for medical tourism mainly because healthcare innovations have gotten very advanced and the costs are much lower compared to the US, Europe, etc.

The scope for Medical Tourism in India is concentrated around Transplants, Orthopaedic, and Cardiac treatments. Due to the huge surge in patients, there is an option to avail a special visa category to make the process quicker and hassle-free under the Government of India’s ‘e-Tourism Visa Regime’. In India, the Asian Heart Institute is most sought-after for cardiac bypass surgery because medical tourists from most nationalities are welcome here and obtain access to top experts.

This year, non-Covid care and Medical Tourism declined in India due to the risk of Covid infection. However, the coming year will be better since Medical Tourism is steadily picking up pace. Standalone hospitals, multi-specialty hospitals, and regional hospital chains in the healthcare sector need to be prepared.

The low-income patient base from developed countries are your target market. By positioning your healthcare facility as an affordable destination of low-cost treatments, you can tap into the growing market.

There will be high demand for Orthopaedic Surgery in the coming years. Orthopaedic surgeries include knee and hip replacement surgeries. The high demand is due to active sport participation in developed countries as well as the high frequency of road accidents in these countries. Upgrade your medical equipment and offer minimally invasive knee and hip replacement surgeries for tourists.

If you are a private hospital, become an accredited healthcare provider.

‘Breathe Well-Being’ is a Gurugram based Diabetes, health-tech start-up which recently raised $1 M in a Pre-Series A funding round backed by 3One4 Capital alongside Angel Investors Sandeep Singhal, Ashish Gupta, and ‘Stanford Angels and Entrepreneurs India’. A new entrant to the health tech industry, this start-up was founded in 2020 and is rapidly scaling up.

Decoding the strategy

Breathe Well-Being’s strategy to reach out to 10 M Indians suffering from Type 2 Diabetes has been to follow a tech-abled healthcare delivery model since this approach has immense potential.

Their technology platform, the ‘Breathe App’ runs on a clinically proven digital programme. This programme follows a personalised coach-driven, community-first approach through interactive gamification to help patients suffering from Type 2 Diabetes bring down their blood sugar levels, lose excess weight and to reach a point where they can easily wean off medication.

Impact on the Industry

Breathe Well-Being’s D2C (Direct-to-Consumer) approach is unique in the healthcare sector. Their approach is also built on first principles and fundamentals which is strong and attractive to investors in healthcare.

The current healthcare industry that caters to Diabetes is based on medications that cause long-term effects on a patient’s health. Breathe Well-Being is making a significant impact on the industry by addressing the problem from its root and by taking a lifestyle approach to treat the disease rather than a symptomatic approach. The results they’ve achieved are tremendous even with their holistic approach.

How the start-up is a competition

The team behind ‘Breathe Well-Being’ has deep expertise in healthcare, community and lifestyle management. The start-up is a competition because it’s perfectly positioned to create a healthcare revolution in the digital delivery space.

Why did the growth happen?

The company achieved a high growth rate due to strong ‘word-of-mouth’. The company reported 10000 success stories of pre-diabetic and diabetes patients losing weight and reducing their blood sugar levels. This tremendous achievement has surely accelerated their growth pace through good reviews and recommendations from users.

The fact that the founders of ‘Breathe Well-being’, Rohan Verma and Aditya Kaicker are both second time founders in the healthcare industry has also contributed to a 30% M-O-M (month-on-month) growth with a 22x rise in their subscription base within 12 months.

Right from how we used to carry out our day-to-day functions to something as common as embracing the care of our loved ones, the pandemic isolated all of us to the four walls of our home. As we remain inside our houses patiently, doing the best we can to help the world fight back the virus, the past year has taken a tremendous toll on our mental health.

The psychological effects of being isolated from our dear ones, staying inside for a prolonged period of time with very few resources to help ourselves, in addition to the heart-breaking headlines we come across everyday, has generated serious health concerns such as mental health problems. Reports of individuals, especially teenagers and young people, being diagnosed with mental depression, developing ill habits and in some extreme cases self-harm tendencies have surged.

In the view of Public Mental Health awareness, Dutch Uncles spoke to the founder of Lucid Minds – Sridhar Laxman – who interacted with us on the live show under the banner ‘Navigating the challenging times’. The weekly live show is part of the company’s ‘MentorED’ series.

Below are the few highlights from the show:

There’s a feeling that you are not able to think clearly that suddenly all your resources, your mental facilities and faculties have come to a halt. It almost feels like you held back and froze. Sometimes clients tell me they’re extremely impulsive when they’re uncertain and when they’re stressed. When they’re impulsive they end up making rash choices and decisions and thereby they experience consequences or outcomes that are not pleasant.”

Further, the speaker elaborated the experience of what it feels like to move from a place of stress to a place of calm in order to achieve mental health

One, maybe sit down some time, and make notes about what it is that you love to do, what comes to you naturally.

What would you do if your needs, financial needs, security needs and other needs were met? How would you spend your time? Look at what answers come up. Next, maybe go online and look for articles related to how to develop purpose. There are numerous articles by well-known personalities, psychologists, researchers, you would get some information on that. But I think it starts with listening to your heart, understanding and getting to know yourself better. What makes you come alive? What makes you feel like you’re at your best? What would you do if given a choice to do for the rest of your life?

I hope that again gives you something to work with.

How do I find the balance between analysis, paralysis and hasty decisions?

Speaker: Chase harmony, rather than balance, when you say how many, you know everything is not equal. But they flow with each other, sometimes. One is more, one is less, sometimes this is more, sometimes that is less, we are okay with the coexistence of these different parts in different proportions, rather than everything being equal, right?

Life is uncertain, we have no control, you’re not going to have everything exactly how you want. That’s the harsh reality. So, I think harmony is important.

The point that you raise around analysis paralysis is also to ask yourself what is the need? Where is this need coming from? What is it that you are seeking? What meaning does data have for you that you need to turn over and look into so much of analysis and it leads to as you call it, paralysis? What is driving this need? Then maybe try and manage that better. Again, you know, I’m aware, these are fairly intense, deep topics and it will take time to answer them. But for now, my point is in the simplistic manner. Ask yourself, what is driving this need for analysis? What are you not sure of, what is the fear or stress that’s causing you to analyse maybe something over and over again, and attend to the fear and the stress? Do that by opening the first door, which is to manage yourself, and then come back and see if the need for analysis is as high as before.

They feel insecure and demeaning to look out for advice from outside and even within the company whether the situation, for example, is of unprecedented spike in demand or slowdown in demand.

Founders shouldn’t feel that they have to go it alone. An abundance of support and high-quality advice can make all the difference in difficult times, which means the importance of getting the most out of your existing network of advisors and investors need not to be overemphasized. Research shows that most founders do not know how to ask, can’t ask, or do not want to ask.

Founders are aware that there are no tried-and-true play books available on demand for the difficult situations founders are facing during the course of their path. Advice is by no means a silver bullet. The truth is that no one person — founder, investor, advisor or otherwise — has all the answers to every problem. An ability to effectively seek and hear out different perspectives from various sources can make a meaningful difference as founders try to fix the things for their startup. In other words, the mere act of listening, collecting and evaluating advice, even if it’s ultimately discarded, can be a useful guide for founders when all are not good. .

Confident leaders are those who are prepared to admit they don’t have all the answers and are willing to ask for help. Acknowledging your fear to ask for help but moving forward in spite of it makes a leader who knows when to ask for help, learns how to accept it with grace and is willing to offer help in return.

Building a successful business all alone simply is not possible, yet many entrepreneurs shy away from asking for help are support even within the company. The main reason for this is fear of rejection. You may consider the following points to remove your fear of rejection and increase the chances of getting what you need.

People want to help.

Researchers, academicians, theologians, founders, investors, and leaders all agree that helping others gives them a greater purpose and makes them feel good about themselves. The want to help others is a natural instinct that some studies show is present at birth. Give others an opportunity to help you, it makes everyone feel satisfied and happy.

In the midst of uncertainty and shifting priorities, your advisors will be more than interested to give you a helping hand by involving in the decisions you’re making as a founder. But without the right structure in place for asking and receiving advice, even a well-intentioned advice can only create more noise that complicates your decision-making process.

Patrick Ewers, an early LinkedIn director and relationship-building expert, agrees that the concept may sound remarkably simple, but he rarely sees people taking advantage of it. Ewers introduced the idea of ‘value payloads’. “I love the term value payload because it sounds so tangible,” says Ewers. “Value payloads are anything you provide to people that could help them. They could be introductions to people they want to meet, articles about a problem they are trying to solve, a note saying you saw their work and sent it to someone else. Most of the time it requires sending one email, which is easy to make a habit.”

Allusion of transparency.

Thinking that others should see what you’re struggling with and voluntarily step in to help is referred to by psychologists as allusion of transparency. I have heard some founders talking about their belief that someone in their life should know what they need and that they shouldn’t even have to ask. This is a misplaced expectation that may lead to disillusionment at times. Just ask for help, it makes life much simpler because no one is a mind reader.

No one will stop liking or respecting you.

It is nice to be kind and respectful, but let them know that you will understand if they are unable to offer you help, and ask your question outright without beating around the bush or becoming overly apologetic.

There are numerous important decisions resting on your shoulders as founders. You feel the weight of your employees, investors and advisors trusting you to make the right decisions, often with imperfect information. Asking for help from one of your advisors or investors or peers or senior employees can feel like you’re admitting that you don’t know something you’re supposed to. The best way for building deeper and meaningful relationships with your advisors and investors is by being candid and vulnerable.

First of all, you need to stop thinking that asking for help will be inconvenient to others. Asking for someone’s help is a sign of respect and will make them feel good. Follow these rules: try to figure out the answer before you ask for help? Next, think about the problem. Lastly, make a list of questions to ask. This will help your preparation make it more comfortable for you to ask for help.

Check how your colleagues ask for help

Your fears may not be unfounded that asking for help where you work could be perceived as a sign of weakness. If that’s the case, then find the ways others ask for and accept help at work. Watch and even ask someone who could help you with this critical, simple but important question: “What might be the best way to ask you for help on this project?” Let people give their perspectives on how to do it.

Give them details.

Rather than living with the problem and waiting for the other party to jump in to save you, tell them exactly what you are looking for. Sure, it feels better if they step up and offer help without you asking for it, but it’s not fair to expect that from them.
Take the guesswork out of it for the other person; when you lay it all out you set them up for success and you’ll get what you need from them.

Instead of seeking advice, ask for their candid feedback, additional information, more data which is a whole different story. Look for someone who can help you think about a problem in a way that you haven’t considered.

Everyone needs help in life, no matter who you are. The important thing is knowing who to go to for help and doing your due diligence in researching the issue first. After that is completed, approach the expert and let them know what you have found during your research and then your problem. This will show them that you are in real need of their expertise.

Here are the four areas to navigating advice:

First, choose who is in your network of people giving advice

Second, manage the psychology of advice – both your psychology and that of the advice giver

Third, differentiate the types of decisions you are trying to make when getting advice

Fourth, make judgement about good advice vs bad advice

Maximize strong advisor relationships.

As a founder, you’re used to measuring the success of your business with quantitative numbers, from pipeline to revenue to customer retention. However, advisory relationships have limited metrics to measure success and rather feedback tends to be qualitative. Amy Chang, founder of Accompany (a networking startup acquired by Cisco) and current EVP and GM at Cisco Collaboration, has mentioned that she amassed many advisors over the years but struggled with measuring the effectiveness of these relationships and their contributions.

Tell them why you chose them specifically.

In some instances, it’s a good idea to let the other party who is the advisor know why you chose them for help in the first place. You preempt the advisor by saying that it’s sometimes difficult to do everything for yourself. By stating the facts and your needs up front you can avert any attempt on the part of the advisor to dismiss your needs. He also knew exactly which of his many skills you are depending on to help you out.

When a specific someone comes to mind, be forthright about it. They will feel good about your observations and it helps to move the conversation right to the point.

Thank them but don’t make it transactional.

Like all successful relationships, advising is a two-way street. As a founder seeking advice from your mentors, investors and advisors, it’s crucial to make sure that you are demonstrating appreciation for those that help you tackle the twists and turns of running a startup. However, right now things are so chaotic that just saying “thank you” to those that have provided game-changing advice can get lost in the midst of other to-do list items.

Offering a favor in return for a favor can backfire on you as it can seem manipulative because we all know that offering a return favor makes it harder to say no. Thank them tactfully. A small gift card in the mail, flowers, or an otherwise meaningful token of your appreciation are all appropriate gestures.

Your friends, colleagues, peers, investors and relatives all have good reason to help you since they respect and care for you. Give others an opportunity to lend a hand, because it can make everyone happy.

Know what it means to follow up

This is one of the most important things that many don’t care about much. Whatever advice someone gives you, give them feedback on how it was considered, acted on or applied, and what happened as a result. Your advisors care deeply about giving advice or creating connections that make an impact for your business and want to know their time is being well spent. Letting them know that their guidance had an impact on you and your business is a critical best practice that will help you, them and other founders. However, one of the challenges involved in the follow-up process is staying organized and keeping track of where advisors have been helpful, especially when you spread your search for help across multiple advisors, investors and mentors.

Advice Paralysis

A piece of caution here. One of the best pieces of advice about advice I have heard came from Dennis Hightower, the former head of Disney International. “There are 13 ways of doing anything, and 11 of them will work. Just pick one and do it,”. In other words, there is not usually only one right choice. So most of the time, making a decision quickly and moving forward is the best way to take advice. Don’t worry about finding the one true path because often there may be many paths that can lead to success. Don’t get caught in advice paralysis.

“I have spent a fortune in setting up my online garment business. Earlier I was getting orders, but there’s hardly any growth from the last few months,” says Sushmita, owner of Sampoorna collections. “Besides that, it is a lonely road,” she adds. She is joined in her endeavour by her husband, M Biswas, who also works in a private office. “These are difficult times, and it is difficult to sustain.” He also echoed his wife’s fears of being lonely and how it impacted their peace and mental health.

It is said that “it’s lonely at the top”, but the fact is, as Sushmita mentions, “it can be very lonely on the way up but much worse at the bottom.” In COVID times, with working from home, online meetings, and no connection with the outside world, “it is like living in a bubble and is lonely.”

Human beings need associations. Author Johann Hari writes in his book – Lost Connections – “humans need tribes, like bees need hives”- and it would not be wrong to say that the cocktail of all things that happened in the last one year has made everyone, more so entrepreneurs, with their ventures suffering losses, susceptible to various mental health issues.

Just the Absence of Mental Health Problems is Not Enough

Mental health is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as not merely the absence of mental health problems but as a “state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and can make a contribution to her or his community.” During recent COVID times, entrepreneurs are facing challenges to sustain. They are unable to cope with the stress, and financial stress has subdued their excitement and courage. Their productivity has decreased, and often family relationships get impacted.

Dr Mridula Seth, author, development communications professional and mental health activist, says, “Life satisfaction is connected with our work, family and environment. And for entrepreneurs, it is connected with their work and self.” Her nephew is an entrepreneur and runs an online store.

As per the WHO definition of mental health, the community’s role becomes vital in tackling the rising mental health issues. A study by the University of San Francisco researcher Michael Freeman while dissecting the number of mental health issues, opines that the impact is more visible among the entrepreneurial community. The findings of the research are pretty shocking. The study points out that nearly 49% of entrepreneurs suffer from one form of mental health conditions in their lifetime. His research mentions that start-up founders are:

Twice as likely to suffer from depression

Six times more likely to suffer from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

Three times more likely to suffer from substance abuse

10 times more likely to suffer from bipolar disorder

Twice as likely to have a psychiatric hospitalization

Twice as likely to have suicidal thoughts

Job Satisfaction for Entrepreneurs: Is the formula different?

For entrepreneurs, job satisfaction is more closely related to satisfaction with life, family and self than it is for employees, reflecting the centrality of work in their life. Entrepreneur Shikhar Pabi began his entrepreneur journey in 2019. His company Purple Rabbit is into digital marketing and has an e-commerce portal. He says, “It is very challenging to be an entrepreneur. Yes, it does affect our mental health. There is uncertainty, and nowadays, investors are not coming forward. And to survive these difficult times, one needs to have inner strength and conviction.” To overcome obstacles and maintain a healthy mind, he motivates himself by seeing autobiographical films. “Motivational films help me to maintain sanity and give me strength to chase my goal.”

He emphasized that entrepreneurs face working conditions that are more challenging than those of salaried employees. “Being an entrepreneur means uncertainty, responsibility, and complexity. As an employee, one is sure of the salary at the end of the month. But as entrepreneurs, we have to generate income to support ourselves, employees as well as to think about the scalability of our projects.”

Often entrepreneurs are trained to ignore the qualitative needs of their well-being measured in meaningful relationships, satisfaction and happiness. As an entrepreneur, they believe in the traditional sermon – ‘no pain, no gain.’ They have internalized this advice from elders and believe that success can only be measured in quantitative returns. “What matters is how much we invest and the return it gives us,” says Rakhee Singhi, an entrepreneur based in Chennai. She runs a health and body fitness centre. She began her entrepreneurship journey immediately after college. It has often given her sleepless nights. “I began a boutique, experimented with many other projects, but today I am a health and body expert.”

Entrepreneurship satisfaction and happiness depend on return on investment and profit. There’s a constant tussle between quantitative returns and qualitative sustainability. And in this puzzle, many a time entrepreneurs crumble, their mental health deteriorates in the cutthroat competitiveness.

After college, he, along with his friend, began an IT firm. For the initial two years, they hardly had clients. The loan mounted. They picked up all sorts of work, and in front of the employees, they pretended. But their calm demeanour masked a secret. Alone, they would discuss their fears. Their ship was sinking deeper into the debt. Then came the boiling point when both of them reached the brink of financial collapse and nervous breakdown. Both of them saw their dreams crumbling. From employers, they became employees. “We were completely broken. Our mental health was bruised,” recalls Rahul. It was because of their understanding families that both of them were able to pay off the loans. This happened five years ago, and they have not forgotten their dream. They hope to restart their entrepreneur journey once normalcy returns.

Unlike them, not everyone who walks through darkness sees the sunshine. On 27 January 2013, well-known founder Jody Sherman, 47, of the e-commerce site Ecomom died by suicide. A few days later during the board meeting, a shocking financial fact was shared – the company was broke. Its liabilities were far greater than assets. Ecomom was shut down. The company that began with 28-people, managed to raise more than $12 million total – ran out of cash. And surprisingly no one at the company knew anything about it. Jody Sherman’s death sent shivers down the spine of the start-up community.

Globally, the business forums began to show concern for entrepreneurs’ mental health and the associated stigmatization of mental health issues. Unfortunately, even now mental health issues are discussed behind closed doors. Families are still labelled and often isolated. And entrepreneurs are part of this society and mindset. “All said and done, mental illness and mental health issues are still unacceptable to families and society,” says Dr Mridula Seth. In her book- Minding the Mind: A Volunteer’s Insights on Mental Health, she writes, “Media plays a pivotal role in the stigmatization of mental illness and therefore could also play a role in the de-stigmatization process.” According to her though awareness is essential, concrete steps are needed to minimize the mental health risks of entrepreneurs “who day after day are caught in the conundrum of quantity, quality and investment return.”

Despite the road to top being full of challenges and bumpy, many view entrepreneurship as glamorous, full of excitement, a dream career where one is one’s own boss. True. But the journey is full of potholes and often gives birth to fragile mental health. In this scenario, many young entrepreneurs feel that there should be healthy competition, and each should make other competitors less lonely. “Only this can make entrepreneurs less vulnerable to mental health issues,” agrees Shikhar Pabi.

It has dimmed the distance between entrepreneurs and employees. “By being honest on social media, one passes a message to employees that by being honest about my mental health, I respect their mental health status, too,” says Shikhar Pabi.

We talk about Inc 500 companies. We worship successful entrepreneurs. But we forget entrepreneurs like Sachdeva and Jody Sherman who couldn’t make it. We forget about their mental health.
