Several small businesses and brands have pivoted online to build their independent online store to become direct-to-consumer brands. The increasing number of small businesses going online is paving demand for logistics service post- covid a majority of them now will be heavily dependent on the doorstep or last-mile delivery services.

Challenges in the last mile delivery for MSMEs and D2C companies

The D2C business counters several bottlenecks in the supply chain while being a new player in online commerce. Here are the most challenges faced by the businesses :

Last-mile order tracking: It is cumbersome for small businesses to manage last-mile deliveries through multiple courier partners that also require customer care to be seamless and proactive.

Not catering to all geographic locations: Small businesses cannot do order fulfillment for demand coming from small towns and villages of India as their logistics partner does not service such remote areas, leaving those markets underserved and losing business opportunities.

Managing reverse logistics: Reverse logistics management is crucial for MSMEs to remain competitive and provide the best online shopping experience to customers. Most problems faced are during the pick-up point of the returns, as most delivery men are not available at the designated time slot.

To cater to the challenges faced by the small business and D2C in the supply chain, Ecom Express – a technology-enabled end-to-end logistics solution to provide for the e-commerce industry – has recently announced the launch of a self-sign-up portal called E-Zippie.

It will act as a one-stop shop for logistics services in less than 30 minutes. Also, benefitting Ecom Express, this initiative will help to simplify the customer onboarding process with various small businesses by enhancing user experience and providing more flexibility in terms of service plan and price selection.

E-Zippie will be leveraging the latest banking and identity verification APIs to reduce redundant manual back-end processes and paperwork for smooth onboarding and can start shipping orders instantly. For solving customer grievances, small business owners can submit requests at their convenience through their mobile that will be directed to the concerned department that handles the request without any manual intervention or re-keying of information.

How will E-Zippie prove to be beneficial for small businesses?

The backbone of India’s economic strength lies on the shoulders of 6.3 million small businesses. With online shopping becoming the norm in the pandemic, robust logistics and digital capabilities will be crucial for the growth of an online small business. What took 10-12 days for a small business to register with a logistic player, with E-Zippie will take less time.

Moreover, Ecom Express’s delivery network reaching more than 27000 pin codes, will enable small businesses to make their products available to rural and remote places of India and tap the underserved market conveniently. Small businesses can gain direct control of their shipments with maximum flexibility in managing their end-to-end shipment life cycle.

Kerala, fondly known as god’s own country is reopening its tourism gates to soften the impact of the pandemic on the industry. Tourism alone in Kerala accounts for 11.5 percent of the state’s GDP and employs 1.5 million people. The lockdowns in the pandemic have cast a spell of zero revenue on the tourism industry for over a year. With vaccination drives acing its pace, Kerala tourism is beginning to reopen its tourism by strictly adhering to the bio-bubble model.

What is the Bio-Bubble model that Kerala tourism will be adhering to?

Bio-bubble is a sanitised, safe and secure environment in which the tourists administered with a minimum of a single jab will be insulated from the external contacts. It is mandated by the government that all the possible tourist contact with locals right from cab drivers to tour guides and operators to the staff in hotels, resorts, and homestays must be vaccinated.

However, this secured cocoon model adopted in the recent Tokyo Olympics as well as in the 2021 IPL tournament has burst as around 70 athletes tested positive in the opening ceremony despite following strict protocols of RT-PCR tests. The IPL tournament had to be postponed as cricketers from the KKR team were posted positive. With this, the sustainability of Bio-bubble remains a question. Can this be implemented in the travel and tourism sector in a highly populous country like India? Can there be other ways of safe tourism practices?

After the virus breakout, travel and tourism will not remain the same as they used to be, but for revival, there is a dire need to implement safe tourism practices to instill confidence in people about safe traveling.

Introducing cycle trips: To establish social distancing, sightseeing on cycle trips can be implemented. The earlier manner of sightseeing in groups while walking has a high risk of contracting the virus. The travel companies can organise cycle tours for travellers during low traffic hours and following the tour guide on a cycle where they can experience the nearby local markets, monuments, and short hiking locations. This sustainable form of sightseeing has been implemented in Jaipur.

Introduce slot bookings: Travel and adventure companies can introduce online slot bookings for activities such as boating, forest safari, kayaking, etc. Travellers will come in the designated time slot to experience the fun in a less crowded environment.

Contactless hospitality: The probability of contracting the virus remains high in hotels. Adoption of contactless services by the hotel chains is imperative to establish minimum contact. Hotels can keep digital menus or food ordering in hotels can happen through apps. All communication to reception or room service can happen through chatbots or video chats. The check-in and check-out process can be digitised by scanning the QR code and digital payment will ensure minimum contact. The entertainment and cooling systems in the rooms such as TV and AC remotes to be replaced by virtual control systems. The restaurant lounges also hold a high risk of contraction, where they can install air purifiers. Cloud-based Internet of Things (IoT) can be implemented for seamless coordination with the housekeeping staff, assigning staff duties, and adhering to hygiene compliances.

What lies ahead for the small hotels and travel companies amidst high hygiene and zero contact?

Smaller hotels have enough born the heat of lockdowns. Therefore, their growth is critical for the state’s economic growth. As per the data from the Ministry of Tourism, the industry’s collective loss i.e. transport and tourism have been pegged at Rs 1.58 lakh crore.

The big franchise-type hotels can partner with smaller hotels and travel companies that will empower the small hotels to manage day-to-day operations with the help of contactless technologies ensuring hygiene and social distancing regulations. The state’s tourism industry can revive by targeting the millennials who can work virtually from anywhere and offer highly personalised experiences.

Those online grocery startups will emerge as winners, that other than offering deep discounts can offer seamless shopping processes and faster deliveries.

Much to the likes of online pharma platforms the online grocery startups are ramping up their operations to deliver instant deliveries and want to replicate the similar ‘instant-ness’ of offline shopping. Faster deliveries, also prevent grocery startups from frequent stock-outs. According to RedSeer consulting, quick commerce is expected to grow 10-15 times in the coming five years to become a $5 billion opportunity by 2025.

How will this 10 min grocery delivery model work?

Here is a simplified process of how this 10 min delivery will work:

The customer places an order of groceries on the app.

After the platform receives the order, the hub nearest to the shopper’s residence is alerted of the orders, which picks and packs them.

The app assigns a delivery partner

Delivery executive reaches the hub to collect the order.

The order is delivered to the customer.

Dependence on dark stores to develop faster delivery models

Online grocery platforms are shifting from the marketplace model to build dark stores or hubs in proximity to consumer’s residences as in the former model the delivery speed slows down. A dark store is a large warehouse or a network of warehouses that stocks inventory to sell directly to its consumers. Grocery startups Milkbasket and BigBasket have implemented this model.

Distribution from dark stores will help startups gain control more on quality and experience fewer stock-out scenarios.

With the click and collect model involved in dark stores, the startups get a clearer picture of stock levels and therefore have better product availability than a marketplace model. Here, the company does not need to spend on retail experience or store beautification. As a result, the cost is saved to stock more variety of items for less inventory. It improves distribution accuracy, avoids mix-ups, and solves perishability challenges, which are usual hurdles in online grocery delivery.

The online grocery startups can also expect slower expansion due to increased spending on distribution centres and hubs.

The couple who was to shift abroad, found the gifts irrelevant as the cookers were not induction cooktop friendly and the fragile crockery sets cannot be carried. These repeated wedding gifts will face the same fate as the Soanpapdi box received during Diwali, ready to repack and gift and the saga continues.

Unlike other generations the millennials are believers in living a sustainable life and are drawn towards philanthropist activities such as donating to charitable organisations, contributing to community welfare, etc. The same behaviour is exhibited in millennial weddings as well, where the newly married couples have donated the gift money received from guests to charity.

The millennial couples of today would like to receive gifts that will have high memory value and can cherish such experiences for a lifetime.

This changing millennial mindset soon became an opportunity for Kanika Subbaih, who founded India’s first gift registry platform- Wedding Wishlist. Weddings in India are a big affair, where people spend a third of their savings in creating king-size celebrations, out of which 15 percent is spent on gifts alone. The gift registry platforms with their origin in western countries, helps families avoid waste also helping the couple start their new life with all the essential things they require.

The Wedding Wishlist – What is it?

Wedding Wishlist is an online gift registry platform that offers free service to couples. The wedding website allows the couple to create a portal for free, where they can fill in the function details, their story, gift preferences and RSVPs. The couple creates a Wishlist of items that they require. If a couple is planning to shift to a new city or shifting abroad their gift requirement will comprise of home décor items, appliances. The couple chooses brands from which it wants to be gifted. The platform has brands of luggage backpacks, grooming products, jewellery, crockery, beauty and spa, adventure getaways, holiday packages, etc. Wedding Wishlist earns commission from the brands from which the guests make purchases.

If a couple wishes to donate to charitable organisations such as orphanages, handicapped individuals, old-age homes, or pet dogs they can enter the amount they wish to donate to the charitable organisation.

As disposable incomes improved and more women joined the workforce, the mothers began looking for tiffin and snack options that can be made in no time or hardly involve cooking. Bread and biscuits, initially brought to our country by the British, soon began to rule the Indian breakfast tables and tea-time. In the future, India’s biscuit market, according to the Market Outlook report, is estimated to reach $7.25 billion by 2022 at a compound annual growth rate of 11.27 percent.

Moreover, the advent of fast-food chains in burgers, sandwiches, and pizza boosted the demand for bread.

80 percent of the Indian bakery market is dominated by bread and biscuits. As per a report titled, ‘Indian Bakery Market: Industry Trends, Share, Size, Growth, Opportunity and Forecast 2020-2025’ by the IMARC Group, the Indian bakery market is estimated to be worth $13.3 billion by 2025, expanding at an annual compound rate of 9.1 percent.

But over time, sedentary lifestyles are giving birth to diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. As people become more health conscious, they want to cut their sugar intake to a minimum while not refraining from eating them. With the rise of fitness social media influencers emphasising on fitness and minimum calorie intake, consumers, especially the millennials, are seeking bakery products that provide high nutritional value and are fibrous. This is making bakery manufacturers include more nutritious ingredients like oats along with minimal to zero use of artificial colours and preservatives and avoiding high fructose syrup completely.

What lies ahead for the Indian biscuit and bakery industry?

The pandemic has forced people to revisit their plates and shift to healthier foods and immunity-boosting foods. As health remains on top of the priority list, people are willing to pay more for additive-free biscuits and bread products. Besides, additive-free, organic bakery products in the market will also show strong demand as people are aware of the side-effect of excessive fertiliser induced crops.

Recently, FSSAI has limited the use of trans fat limit in bakery foods to 3 percent from 5 percent to prevent the risk of cardiovascular ailments. This will result in biscuits and bread manufacturers looking for fat alternatives such as unsaturated fats to adhere to regulatory requirements.

In a feat to achieve self-reliance and to fuel the burgeoning growth of startups, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced to expand the scope of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) for the corporates to increase funds for the incubators not just limiting to technology incubators located within academic institutions approved by the central government.

The new provision of Schedule VII of the Companies Act entails CSR of 2 percent fund to be spent on incubators that are funded by the central or state government or any agency or public sector undertaking of state or central government and to those incubators making contributions to IITs, national laboratories, public-funded universities and several autonomous bodies such as ICAR, CSIR, ICMR, DST and DRDO, DBT and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology engaged in conducting research in science, engineering, technology and medicine aimed at promoting sustainable development goals.

How will this expansion of CSR funds be beneficial to the incubators?

The incubators receive funds from government corpus and sometimes through philanthropic donations that are not sufficient for working capital. The incubators are constantly hunting for donations or investment. The situation is even grimmer for incubators housed within academic institutions, as the Institute directors are concerned with the bureaucracy that is blind to the understanding of an incubator. The investors show reluctance in providing funds to incubators by asking them to show results and maintain a healthy financial statement. Lack of monetary strength in incubators discourages students to enter into entrepreneurship, where they finally end up taking jobs from the campus placements.

Another hurdle for lacking funds in the incubator is the industrialist’s perception of startups. They believe that funding the incubators might result in mushrooming of competitors. Whereas startups work in a different way than traditional businesses, the startups leverage new-age technology and ideas that can solve the existing or future challenges.

The expansion of CSR funds to incubators will aid in developing better research facilities and will encourage more students to take up a career in startups.

With the expansion of funds, incubators can directly offer these funds as grants and investments in return for equity.

While reminiscing the good old days of the birthday celebrations of his college days, the friend sitting abroad surprises him with his favourite cake at midnight. The distant friend that day thanked the existence of online gifting, for which he could send across the cake to his friend that too at midnight.

Online gifting has been on a growth trajectory in India after people enjoyed the convenience of gifting from a distant location to choose from multiple customisable gifting options for numerous occasions or sometimes it cannot be any occasion. After all, who needs an occasion to showcase love and affection.

According to a report from TechSci Research, the online gifting industry in India is projected to grow from $119 million in 2019 to $159 million by 2025. Over the years, the occurrence of gifting occasions has increased due to the rising influence of a western culture that has birthed new occasions such as sibling’s day, grandparent’s day, pet day, etc, which otherwise was limited to birthdays and marriage anniversaries.

The online gifting industry is divided into three gifting segments namely: festive, corporate, and personal. According to Technopak, the total size of the Indian corporate and personal gifting market combined is Rs 250,000 crore. Of this, the corporate gifting owns Rs 12000 crore and is estimated to grow over 200 percent per annum.

New trends in the Online Gifting industry

Corporate gifting into wellness and WFH products

Owing to the health crisis caused by Covid-19, the corporates are not just limiting themselves to appreciation letters and flexible working schedules for their employees. Companies are offering more wellness and work-from-home products ensuring the well-being and safety of employees. Wellness products like immunity-boosting teas, ayurvedic products, Vitamin C supplements, customised masks, hand sanitizers are some of the top gifting choices for corporates in gifting. This also bolsters corporate branding.

Green gifting

Most individuals are choosing to give meaningful gifts such as indoor plants over disposable gifts. The majority of the gift plants include bamboo, succulents, money plant, medicinal plants, and bonsai. These plants are associated with luck and promote healthy surroundings.

The pandemic effects

The preventive measures of the pandemic have taken away the shine from our celebrations since only a limited number of people can come over. People who are staying distant are showcasing their affection for friends and relatives by sending personalised gifts via online booking.

e-Gift cards

Gift givers sometimes offer e-gift cards to their loved ones. An e-gift card consists of a digital code that is emailed to the recipients. It is the most convenient gifting option for a wedding occasion or house warming ceremonies as several times the gifts are repeated. An e-gift card gives recipients the freedom to make purchases from retail, restaurants, furniture stores, etc. With a validity of over a year or 6 months, they can use it at their convenience.

The video show format resembling Telebrands and Naaptol is an effective presentation of corporate gifting products explaining its features.

What lies ahead for the online gifting industry in India?

In the corporate gifting space, companies are realising the power of employee engagement and brand building, and now with a remote workforce, the surge in demand for corporate gifting will increase.

The local handicraft players can get a boost from the online gifting industry. Online gifting start-ups for more unique gifting options, can add terracotta products, mirror work crafts, wobbly head dolls and Channapatna toys.

Offering digital services of live musicians singing or playing an instrument of the recipient’s favourite song, or live dancers performing will give them an earning opportunity that has largely been hampered in the pandemic.

The situation was distressing. Loss of jobs, no food and water, trains and buses stalled, and a fear of contracting the virus, forced these poor migrant workers to reach home via foot and bicycle. Pained by such incidents, Sonu Sood emerged as the Samaritan, who arranged ten buses for the migrant workers staying in Mumbai to travel back to their homes in Karnataka in the nationwide lockdown imposed.

The saying necessity is the mother of invention stands in its truest form with Sonu Sood’s recent B2B entrepreneurial venture- Travel Union, in the travel and hospitality space catering to the travel needs of rural consumers.

The pandemic has wrecked several sectors, but the maximum damage took place in the travel and hospitality sector. According to a report from KPMG, the Covid-19 crisis might render job losses worth 38 million in the Indian tourism and hospitality sector, ie.70 percent of its workforce employed.

In terms of revenue losses, a report from Thomas Cook India reveals that the consolidated loss in FY 21 amounts to Rs 416 crore from Rs 69 crore in 2020.

What is Travel Union?

Witnessing the difficulties faced by the rural travellers, Sonu Sood realised that the travel sector is highly unorganised in smaller cities and towns Travel Union is an assisted rural digital travel services platform through which a rural traveller can book a train, bus, flights tickets, and book hotels at competitive prices. The Travel Union app is available in English and Hindi language and plans to launch in 11 more languages.

How does it solve the problem for rural travellers?

When a rural traveller plans his journey, it is not pre-planned. The gap was more highlighted when during the pandemic, they had to interact with multiple operators. For a particular search, the travel app aggregates all the available price options and shows the Travel Union agents the lowest prices they can offer their customers. It provides inventory, competitive prices, and state-of-the-art technology directly from airlines, railways, hotels, trips, wholesalers, and aggregators. It also has the facility for online cancellations and refunds, eliminating the long wait customers usually have to endure.

How Travel Union is an employment opportunity for rural travel agents and small travel agencies?

Rural lodges and small hotels never came under the gambit of online booking. Moreover, the potential 38 million job loss is alarming for this sector to revive. Travel Union will onboard travel agents that will cater to the travel needs of rural customers at every district, block, and gram panchayat level. The travel agents to become a member of the Travel Union need not make any investment. However, if anyone wishes to become an IRCTC agent ID, a deposit of Rs 1199 will be needed which will be refunded within 8 months, making the ID free.

The small travel agents with Travel Union will have access to trains, more than 10,000 bus operators, over 500 domestic and international flights, and more than 10 lakh hotels. The revenue model for rural travel agents is through high margins generated from direct booking options with several travel service partners. It has a dedicated 24X7 customer care that will address the travel agent’s queries.

What lies ahead for the digital travel and hospitality platforms catering to rural India?

The launch of such travel tech platforms for the rural space will provide ample revenue opportunities to the small travel agents that are staring at unemployment. Also, it will give the rural lodges and small hotels an opportunity that has long remained untapped by online travel services. Foreigners, in general, are eager to experience rural India, thus in the future, there might be a chance for the rural travel platforms to ensure safe hospitality and hassle-free transportation for them in rural areas.

The broken wire and dental braces can cause internal bleeding resulting in possible dental infections.

Taking inspiration from the San Jose-headquartered AlignTechnology, the makers of Invisalign braces, and realising this to be a potential in the Indian market Dr. Arpi Mehta, co-founder, and CEO of Toothsi, founded Toothsi- a D2C smile makeover dental chain in 2018.

How did Toothsi happen to Dr. Arpi Mehta?

Dr. Arpi Mehta pursued a certification in lingual (invisible) orthodontics. Upon understanding that teeth alignment through metal braces is a painful process that also causes other dental problems, she partnered with three orthodontists, Pravin Shetty, Manjul Jain, and Anirudh Kale to launch smile makeover service Toothsi in Mumbai in November 2018. The startup’s target audience belongs to the age bracket of 18-35 years of individuals. The startup began with a bootstrapping amount of Rs 5 crore from friends and co-founders.

Dr. Arpi Mehta’s Toothsi is disrupting the dental braces market by providing invisible teeth aligners that are customised flexible plastic trays pre-programmed through software to move a set of teeth in a certain manner. Noticing Indian youngsters are highly conscious about looks and take efforts to look picture-perfect,Toothsi’s customised invisible teeth aligner stands perfect in the product-market fit.

Its invisible teeth aligners also guarantee smile correction within 6-8 months compared to 1-2 years from metal braces. Today, Toothsi is present in Delhi/NCR, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Pune and till date have delivered 11,000 smile makeover plans, and has ambitious plans to generate Rs 100 crore annual recurring revenue (ARR) in a few months.

The situation is even distressing in rural India or in orthodox patriarchal families, where women’s health issues are to be kept secret and must not be disclosed to men or doctors. At times, most women are unaware of certain irregularities happening in their bodies and tend to neglect it till the disease reaches its malignant stage.

Besides, the stigma of most gynecologists being men makes females hesitant to openly talk about their problems or feel shy when it comes to examining the body.

The onset of the pandemic has highlighted the need for a robust healthcare system.
