So, let’s see how learning from sports can help entrepreneurs succeed in business.

Starting is lonely and often discouraging

It is a fact that every beginner goes through the blues of starting something new. While the adrenaline seems amiss in delving into the new paradigm, be it a new sport or setting up a small business, the beginning seems more challenging due to that fear of new and unknown. But as the saying goes, “Rome was not built in a day”, the same is true for an athlete and a business. Starting is lonely, but it is temporary. As the journey proceeds, the struggle becomes a thing of the past. It is often replaced by a new set of challenges that can be overcome by the skills acquired in this process.

Set realistic goals – Know exactly what you’re trying to achieve

Just like some players, entrepreneurs sometimes set grand and lofty goals right from the outset. But it is a proven strategy for athletes to start small and take things one day at a time to reach the end-line successfully. Entrepreneurs, too, must follow this practice of setting realistic goals and working for them consistently, increasing their chances of success.

Consistency and perseverance

Along with clearly set and achievable goals, athletes work towards them consistently and perseveringly. It is the inherent nature of sports and practice that makes sportspersons competitive and, thus, successful. And this holds vital importance in the journey of aspiring business people as well. Entrepreneurs should imbibe these values of athletes right from the beginning of their entrepreneurial path to make a successful leap in their careers.

Discipline and dedication

If discipline were a book, it would be an athlete’s Bible. Even if they are not medal bearers or absolute champions, all athletes are strictly tuned to the daily schedules that they have to follow with discipline. The above two points of realistic goals and consistency are primarily driven by discipline. If one is to start a new business or learn about the business world, they must surely follow an athlete’s discipline and dedication.

Focus – Attention to detail

Every well-trained and serious player has one thing in common — an obsession with details. Players know every aspect of their sport as they all are crucial for a good performance. They maintain a rigorous training schedule and pay close attention to details as little details can make or break their performances. Entrepreneurs must also imbibe these values to capitalise on opportunities for advancement and other avenues of success and should be focused and detail-oriented.

Failure – Learn from losing

The fact of sports (and life in general) is that there are always winners and failures. All athletes know that they are not going to win all the matches and events in their life. It is what they take away from the experience of losing that finally propels them to win. Athletes turn inward and analyse their own performance, scrutinise their lapses and see their failures and missteps as possibilities for improvement.

The same is true for entrepreneurs. Losing is a temporary condition. Every day is a unique opportunity to take in new aspects, grow and succeed. True accomplishment comes when one learns from errors and grows past them.

Have grit

Indeed, the best athletes are the ones who have unique skills and talents and are the most flexible and adaptable – however, other things too separate good athletes from the great ones. The skill of grit makes a lot of difference. Grit is self-discipline accompanied by an emotional commitment to a task and a strong desire to accomplish it. To be successful, entrepreneurs must also cultivate grit, just like athletes do. They must have the ability to withstand adversity and have the grit and determination to achieve their goals.

Realising success and celebrating accomplishments

We can witness the apt comparison between business and sports in an expressive celebration of one’s success. When an athlete brings home gold, s/he is celebrated for the mega achievement, and the entire nation goes into celebration, just like Neeraj Chopra’s recent win for India. In business, too, entrepreneurs must recognise their and their employee’s success. They should find ways to cheer one another on when, say, a co-worker makes new record sales or wins a big client. Not only does this promote unity, but it also gives an incentive for others to accomplish their goals.

Parallels between an entrepreneur and Olympian Neeraj Chopra

The connections between sports and business are omnipresent. Entrepreneurs and aspiring businesspersons have been learning new teachings from sports for a long time. Whether referring to workgroups as “teams” or managers as “coaches”, sports analogies in the business world are applied everywhere.

Olympian Neeraj Chopra has been through a journey that was nothing short of a roller coaster ride. His quest began with the aim of shedding some weight as a kid; today, it has reached its summit with a historic Olympic gold in the javelin throw event. This is not to say that his journey has peaked forever. This is just the beginning. And so is every new day for entrepreneurs. They can do anything, anytime, any day – all they have to do is follow the rulebook of success and adopt an athlete’s skills to thrive and succeed in their world.

The world is a tough place for women. From the historical accounts of denial of the fundamental rights to the contemporary challenges in daily life that women face, their journey is far too different (and more difficult) than it is for the opposite gender in the race. More so, India is an even more difficult country for women to succeed in and navigate through life.

Case in point, one of today’s most successful entrepreneurs and amongst the biggest names in India’s business circles, described as the ‘original slumdog millionaire’, a compliment as backhanded as it is degrading – Kalpana Saroj. Saroj is an Indian Dalit woman who once attempted suicide to escape discrimination, poverty, and physical abuse and is now the Chairperson of a multi-million dollar company.

Here we attempt to document her journey, which is the epitome and an icon of the Dalit struggle, as well as the difficult life of a woman from the margins of society.

Rags to Riches: Story of the Woman who has lived this Phrase

Kalpana Saroj’s is a story that is seldom heard in India and is even rarer to become a sensation for not only women but an entire generation of entrepreneurs. Her life seems like the outline of a Hindi film, with a narrative that has overturned so many hindrances to resolve with a pleasant ending. The “rags to riches” cliché can be overused, but it goes some way in describing the story of Saroj, a woman who struggled on almost all the occasions on her way to the top.

Born into a family from the Dalit community, she was harassed at school, coerced into marriage at the age of 12, and fought discrimination and social pressures to leave her husband, before she tried to take her own life.

India’s caste system is an ancient orthodox social hierarchy still practised by a majority of Indians. This hierarchy puts people into different strata by virtue of their birth – people born into the lower castes have historically faced oppression and discrimination. As a Dalit woman growing up in a remote village, Kalpana’s gender and caste made her life more challenging as these identities hung like a double-edged sword over her in her journey to the top.

After being wedded off at the tender age of 12, she was forced to live in a Mumbai slum with her husband’s abusive family, only to be later rescued by her father. She went back to her village to live with her parents. There, she attempted suicide after being ostracised by the villagers.

She began working sixteen hours a day, a habit which she still maintains.

The next stage of her life was no different from the already escalating problems and challenges, but this time she was prepared. In the mid-1990s, after working in a hosiery shop for several months, she decided to open her own shop. While working, she often listened to the radio. There, she heard about various government programmes on the radio and subsequently applied for a loan under the Mahatma Jyotibhai Phule scheme. She used this little seed money of Rs. 50,000 to start a small furniture business and sold cheap imitations of luxury furniture from Ulhasnagar, Thane. On the other hand, she continued her sewing business.

When she started making some profits, along with the money from the grant, Kalpana founded an NGO that is now the Kalpana Saroj Foundation. After suffering from the pain of not finding a job despite numerous attempts, she wanted to save as many people as possible from this employment crisis.

Around the same time, an individual offered to sell her a disputed land at a discounted price of Rs. 2,50,000. After the case and litigation were resolved, the land value soared to Rs 50 lakh, paving the way for Kalpana’s entry into the construction industry in Mumbai.

The strange case of Kamani Tubes

Ramjibhai Kamani, a prominent businessman in the newly independent India, was a great admirer and disciple of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. After independence, he came to Kurla and set up three companies: Kamani Tube, Kamani Engineering and Kamani Metal. Everything was a fortune for him with these industrial enterprises.

But shortly after his death in 1987, a quarrel broke out between his sons and the workers’ union. The union then went to court and asked for a transfer of ownership to the workers because the owner’s behaviour was contrary to the company’s interests. Subsequently, Kamani became the first Indian company whose license was granted to the workers union by the Indian Supreme court instead of the founder’s heirs.

But if there will be three thousand owners, who will do the actual work?

This inevitable self-conflict soon erupted into a crisis in the company. Union leaders had no interest in the company; they just wanted to make a quick buck. As part of the reforms during the time, the company was inundated with loans, renewals and credits from banks. The government also provided them with various resources and services. As a result, they had a huge capital, but no one had the experience to use these resources for the company’s welfare and growth.

Thus, from 1987 to 1997, the company continued to survive one way or another. But as soon as the investors realised what had happened with the money invested as part of the reforms and credit, they came down heavily. Authorities stopped electricity and water supplies for Kamani industries. 140 cases were filed against the company, and it owed Rs. 116 crores to investors. Of the three Kamani companies, two had already gone under. The third, Kamani Tubes, appeared set to go down the same rabbit hole.

At that time, the workers came to Kalpana Saroj, imploring her to save their company and, thus, their livelihood. Her flourishing NGO and business acumen had earned her a decent reputation among business circles. Her knowledge about the industry was not much, but the thought of 566 starving families made her help the distressed company. She had nothing to lose, and the rest is history.

Turing Fate Around – the Kalpana Saroj Way

She took the company’s reins in her hands and formed a core team of ten, each an expert in their respective fields. Then she hired some consultants and created a proposal on how to go about fixing the damage. When Kalpana took her recommendation to the board made up of several IDBI and bank representatives, they agreed to go ahead on the condition that she sits on the board and undertake the responsibility of all liabilities. She agreed and was appointed company president in 2000.

From 2000 to 2006, Kamani Tubes ran in and out of courts. After numerous high-level meetings, requests, and diplomatic considerations led by Kalpana, the penalty and interest amounts imposed on the company were eventually forgiven, and 25 per cent of the principal amount was also deducted. Courts almost halved the company’s debt as compared to the original sum. In 2006, for leading the company out of a literal existential crisis, Kalpana Saroj was appointed as the Chairperson. The court transferred ownership of Kamani tubes to her.

In restarting the company and shedding the past weight, Kalpana and her team needed to focus on revamping manufacturing and getting the firm back on its feet. They started by replacing all the machinery which either had been stolen or fallen to disrepair. In 2009, they shifted the factory to Wada, and the company began its uphill path from there.

Today, Kamani Tubes is a growing business worth more than $100 million. Moreover, according to numerous estimates, Kalpana has a personal net worth of $112 million.

“No, I don’t eat breakfast. I want to be effective in my day and dependency on the three meal a day regime reduces my energy. I want to add more working hours,” replies Prabhu Ram, Co-founder and CEO, Payswiff when I started the interview with his morning routine. On being given the chance to describe Prabhu Ram, he summarises, “I would like to be not known or called as an entrepreneur, to be honest, but someone who tries to make a difference in people’s lives and guide them. I’m from southern Tamil Nadu, I lived next to Thanjavur. There, from a small age, I was fascinated by leaders from all walks of life. The ability to change people’s lives is quite big. Hence, ideally, I wish I can be called a leader more than anything else.”

The Early Days

Necessity is the most righteous drive for any goal in life. For Ram, when he saw that it was the time for him to do something different, he took it more as fate than as passion, “See it would be a lie, if I say here that, I was super passionate about entrepreneurship and that is all I wanted. After a certain age, I decided that things had to be changed for me and my family and so did business happen.” A keen observer often finds his inkling at the earliest. Ram, back in the days, visited a get together of families of employees of a corporation. It was a Diwali meet. He saw them having dinner together, exchanging gifts and smiles. He was quick to conclude the powers of starting something big that can potentially lead many lives to a prosperous future. Mind you, Ram back then was just 14.

In 1995, a wedding invitation card came in the hands of Ram. He found it ‘very colourful, very different’. He tried to then understand how it was made and got to know that the whole process is rather cheap. With all his friends from college, he formed his first team. Then with Ram, the whole bunch toiled day and night to make it a successful business. “From childhood days, I had a liking for every business that had ‘scale’. I researched a bit and saw that not many people were involved in the printing business in the neighbouring towns. That means, people around me can become a part of what I want to do and it can be expanded.”

Networking in its classic form was never Ram’s cup of tea. He believes in trying out new things, new kinds of business ideas which will eventually bring people together. He does not believe in the hype of networking as the core of one’s business. He asserts the kind of networking he would rather prefer, “Coming together of people for ideas is a natural process. You attract people who are like-minded. The market is always on the lookout for such scalable businesses. You build one, people will notice and they’ll connect you to other important people.”

Identity Crisis And Entrepreneurship

Till he was 24, Ram’s life was harried by two emotions adults face when the decision taking phase in their life takes over. Peer pressure and Identity crisis. “I think we all carry something like an identity crisis for a long time. Let’s say I was facing the same situation in that time. And to couple that, people started telling me, ‘he is going outside for this course, he is doing that course,’ and that leads to peer-pressure as well.” Ram believes that such moments of stress are necessary for the personality in an entrepreneur to shape up and come out. For himself, he wanted to be seen as someone who is into the business. Ram remembers his mother’s words regarding the same, “Taking time in finding yourself is like choosing the right battle to fight for. My mother used to say, never pick a small fight. She would convince me every time in different languages that I am meant to do something big.” I ask him back if he still chooses his fights conscientiously, he promptly replies, “I very much do it every time, yes. Not the fistfight like childhood but the real ones (chuckles).”

After the printing business reached a saturation point. Ram moved to Chennai. He started working in a computer assembly business. Him leaving one well-set business to another has a clear logic behind it, “I think an entrepreneur has to have a thirst for one thing that is the scale of a business and second, the visibility of the future. Future has to be here at least 12 to 36 months. Not having the ability to think this way, cannot give you success.” says Ram. He also advises the entrepreneurs to have a clear differentiation from becoming a businessman in the process. “It is also about what kind of journey you want to take as an entrepreneur. An entrepreneur who just wants profit or the one who realises that entrepreneurship is just a level below leadership. So, the opportunity is big, that should be realised.”

Till 2003, Ram kept himself with the computer assembling business in Chennai. Just like the printing business, the saturation point was approaching as well as competitive advantage started declining. At this point, Ram decided to move ahead in life as he believes that anything lacking a Unique Selling Proposition (USP) will anyway mushroom into many small similar businesses. To the same fact, he now looks back with contentment. He voices, “I’m very satisfied. People remember us for that time. They call me from the US and Europe, even today. See, even employees starting up with their own businesses is an inspiration that you provided. It is a pleasure to see them doing well. Seeing people take interest in entrepreneurship is a different kind of peace.”

Ram exited the business with a sense of satisfaction and moved on to a journey that catches on to the technological advancements India was going through. His childlike curiosity about the modern communication systems resonated in his voice as he says, “I don’t know about you but the sound that comes from the modems is quite different. The connection of a dialling modem on connection gives a sound, I liked it. All this had so much potential, it was so fascinating.” This statement of Ram are words of a person who absorbs himself in his work and related culture. 14 years from then, I asked him, if he is still curious and updated, he says, “In fact I’m better updated since I’ve a team now. I get time to read. Also, information dissemination is so rapid. I think it is essential to know what is happening around you.”

Ram’s Digital Payment Conquest

Next, Ram finds his way to the e-commerce transactions world through another of his businesses, a website building company. Website building again as per him did not have the USP but the e-commerce requests that he was receiving intrigued him. He tried to fulfil those requests through payment gateways that were already available in India but they were charging exorbitant charges. “Then we decided to start a payment gateway company. I met one of my partners in Chennai. And we were all new with the idea and thought of a company. We did not know how to raise funds. Or fetch venture capitalists. We simply posted an advertisement in the newspaper. We are a payment gateway company; we need capital of 3 to 4 crores.”

As fate would have it, their shot in the dark did create the buzz they wanted. And through that Ram came in contact with a realtor from Mumbai, Kanu Bhai Shah. That was when Ram finally had that one mentor every entrepreneur needs to learn the walk of life. “He took a bet on me. Two guys from South India with no previous experience in entrepreneurship get a check of 2-3 crores on the basis of vision. I learnt a lot from it. The idea of risk.” Ram shares.

Following the cue, I asked him about risks, on which he shared an excerpt from an army general’s interview, “I read somewhere, that you don’t always have the luxury to take the right decision. Sometimes you need to do your own math. Which is, if I’m 40 percent sure about something. I do it. So, entrepreneurs should always take this measured risk and have multiple approaches in mind. Hence, risk-taking is part of an entrepreneur’s life. As the business will scale and more data is at hand, this math will change. 60 percent data reliability, 40 percent of gut instinct. 70-30 and even when we have all the data, there should be some show of guts, be it 10 percent.”

I also strongly believe that ethics and the idea of righteousness is instrumental.
Ram today is Group CEO of Payswiff, India’s leading payment gateway service provider. Ram started working with Payswiff as founder with the same set of people he had been working with since 2005. This long association with each other, per him, played a role in their success. “Between the co-founders, there is no ego, there is complete understanding, an ease of communication and as I said earlier, you know who is good at what.” So, it’s like working with friends? He’s asked, “No we fight a lot, like cats and dogs (chuckles). Though, as in arranged marriages, you still fall in love, right? So, you always see good for the company in the end right,” Pankaj answers.

Values To Excel

Lack of integrity, articulateness and perseverance in entrepreneurship can all three in combination or individually could prove to be a spectacular failure as per Ram. Which is the most important out of three? Ram says, “Integrity, which leads to humbleness. People around you should feel confident that what you are speaking is what you are thinking too. There’s no time to play around.”

Entrepreneurship in India has witnessed several changes in its culture but there’s scope for more. “I talk to entrepreneurs here and they talk about what they’ll do in the next three years or five. That is very narrow. I have talked to some entrepreneurs from countries like say China, and they tell you beautifully where they see the company in 30 years. That is vision. We need vision in entrepreneurship,” Ram adds.

Ram ends with a recollection of his packed schedule and tries to amusingly explain why he isn’t sleeping better, “Well, I try to be in bed at 11 come what may but I get up at 4 and I read. I sleep again and get up again at 8 o’clock. So, 4 to 5 at night, it is best for reading. Also conscious wise, at times, like any human being, I have fears and anxiety of what is going to happen and what not. That is life, isn’t it?”
