To own a share from each company one needs to invest a massive Rs 5.49 lakh. To solve this, some broking firms or trading platforms provide a fractional trading facility where one can buy less than one share as well, which means they can be the shareholder of 0.00001 shares of FAANG.

Otherwise, the second manner to invest in FAANG stocks can be through the mutual fund route to invest overseas. Investing in FAANG stocks can be profitable since the companies are well-established and are safe to invest in. This also goes without saying that one should always assess their risk-appetite level. In addition to this, one must keep a tab on inflation and interest rates, Fed reserve policies and growth rates across geographies since these factors influence the currency movements.

It is open to companies registered in 200 cities and towns in India.

What is Facebook’s Small Business Loans Initiative?

Facebook’s Small Business Loans Initiative aims to give small businesses access to business loans and narrow the credit gap in the Indian SME sector. This programme allows SMEs to obtain loans between Rs. 5 to Rs. 50 lakh in 200 cities across India.

Getting a loan on time is especially difficult for small businesses that are just starting or have a bad credit history. Facebook’s strategic partnership with Indifi is critical in resolving that hurdle. Indifi is a major digital lending platform for providing business loans to Indian SMEs and Facebook’s partner in providing loans to small businesses. The initiative is set up with the potential to draw more partners.

With this, Facebook has shown its commitment to creating financial opportunities for Indian enterprises.

SMEs and SMBs working on using Facebook as a business platform

As per a survey done last year by Facebook in collaboration with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the World Bank, in 2020, almost one-third of small and medium-sized businesses operating on Facebook cited cash flow as their most significant problem in working. The small business loans initiative is designed with these figures in view.

India has 1.5 million (15 lakh) SMB Facebook pages, and such businesses on Facebook have grown more than 70% year over year. The commerce body supports closer partnerships with the private sector to develop Indian MSMEs. It backs companies like Facebook that are helping small businesses and making it easier for them to get credit access.

How can businesses get benefits from this initiative?

Indifi will not charge small businesses enrolling in Facebook’s Small Business Loans Initiative a processing fee. Indifi will make the funds available within five business days of receiving the small business application and all completed paperwork.

Many small businesses find it challenging to get low-budget loans because they cannot convince lenders of their repaying credibility and business mettle. But small businesses can get loans between Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 50 lakh through this programme. Small companies, wholly or partly owned by women, can also get a 0.2% discount on Indifi lending rates.

Moreover, Facebook will not be monetising this partnership and will help connect small businesses with Indifi. At this point, companies seeking aid do not need to advertise on Facebook, thus making the assistance smoothly available. This is undoubtedly a promising phenomenon for small and medium-sized enterprises and new entrepreneurs looking to fuel their ideas in the current economic climate.

Somewhere in India’s rural town, a housewife struggles to pay her electricity bill online using her smartphone. After hours of hassle, she finally gives up and jumps on to her social media apps. Surprisingly, she scrolls her way through three different apps without a hitch!

This ‘social media comfort’ and its ever-growing base was together mixed with e-commerce popularity by start-up Meesho, which ‘double tapped’ this billion dollar opportunity six years back.

E-commerce has been relentlessly making inroads in every corner of the country, providing small businesses and entrepreneurs a platform to buy and sell. The convergence of social media with the same pushes the success rate, convenience and most importantly adoption of such platforms. Imagine if you give a platform to an aspiring entrepreneur housewife to buy, sell or resell products through a medium she is most comfortable, familiar and connected with.

This has given rise to “social commerce”. In simple terms, it means selling products directly through social media networks and Meesho stands at the top of this game in India.

Bringing Business in ‘Social’ Culture

In social commerce, the buyers are connected with the sellers via social media and can directly interact with them. The former can make a deal by interacting on various social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp.

According to a report by Bain and Company, the social commerce market in India was estimated to be at $2 Billion in 2020 and is aimed to hit $16-20 Billion in 2025. This meteoric rise is credited to the smartphone penetration across the country, especially Tier 2 and Tier 3 and the declining cost of mobile internet. There are about 400 million internet users in the country and the number is ascending by seconds. This has been complimented with the parallel growth of payment gateways and its adoption.

Hence, the opportunity to enter ‘anything digital’ has never been so ripe. Vidit Atrey and Sanjeev Barnwal planned to combine the two opportunities — social media and e-commerce— and hence the inception of brand Meesho.

Meesho had, however, culminated out of another start-up started by the duo, called Fashnear.

In 2015, India was witnessing a rise of “e-shops”, an online business that sells a variety of products and services. They were just like any other retail store, but online. The duo came up with a similar hyperlocal online platform/store for fashion and named it Fashnear, which unfortunately did not see success. The founders started working on a prototype to let offline retailers sell through social media platforms. Thus Meesho (Meri-shop) was born.

Creating ‘Digital Entrepreneurs’

According to the founders, the most special thing about Meesho platform/app is that it allows any person to be an entrepreneur without any investment, from the comfort of their homes. It’s a ‘zero investment’ proposition which creates ‘digital entrepreneurs.

How does the app work? To begin with, starting a business on Meesho app doesn’t require any investment or qualification. The start-up follows the concept of reselling. Once the user enters the app, there is a well-established catalogue of products ranging from clothing to kitchen equipment. All a user needs to do is resell those products to their contacts by sharing the catalogue to friends, family or others on various social platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and generate sales. A commission is earned on every order besides bonuses.

Users also have the option of listing their own products by enrolling into Meesho’s seller account following which they can broadcast themselves on various online social groups and start earning.

Building this app was not easy. Like every start-up, Meesho founders had their share of struggle during the initial days, right from developing the app to deciding on the language. But every decision they made, it was taken in the direction of creating a ‘user-focussed’ business. The start-up wanted to reach out to as many sellers as possible during their early stage itself to get the head start without any risk.

Around 10% of Meesho users are influencers on Instagram and Youtube who are able to make a handsome income by reselling products on the platform. A large chunk of their users also consists of women and students, who are usually very active on social media and are thus able to leverage the opportunity, following small store owners in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

In an interview with Y-Combinator, a California-based seed accelerator, Aatrey had mentioned that they imbibed a lot of patience, especially during the initial days and hired like-minded people from their own network. He terms this as the “single best decision” of his life while reinstating the value of having a strong foundation.

In 2016, the start-up was one of the three Indian companies to be selected by Y-Combinator for a three-month summer programme besides being a part of the first batch of Google Launchpad – Solve for India program.

Meesho secured its first funding of $120,000 from the california-based seed accelerators. Since then, the start-up has raised a total of $515.2 million in funding over 9 rounds; the latest one being Series E in April 2021 which gave the six-year-old start-up a valuation of $2.1 Billion and an entry into the prestigious unicorn club.

In June 2019, Meesho became the first start-up from India to receive an investment from Facebook. The start-up managed to grab the Big Tech’s attention due to its target audience—women and students— and their common goal of enabling small communities and businesses to grow. This partnership was also a part of the tech giant’s strategy to expand its presence in the rising internet market. Facebook has more users in India than it does in any other country and the number is on a steady rise. With India emerging as the second biggest smartphone market, the opportunity is immense.

Power to User: A ‘Zero Investment’ Proposition

A plethora of social media apps have opened up new opportunities, especially for women, students and others, to work from home and earn an income. One of the biggest advantages of using these apps is that one does not need to have any special skills, resume or a college degree to start business. All you need is a smartphone. With the Meesho app, users have the power to select the products they want to sell to their online social community. They also have the power to choose their profit margins and the selling price besides the brand name and identity. Once the customer buys your product, they will be aware of the brand and not just Meesho.

The company came up with an online series— Real Heroes of Meesho/My Meesho Story— to bring to the fore their users’ experience (A smart marketing strategy as well!).

One of them narrates the ordeal of a housewife who was battling depression. She was looking for a job online when she came across Meesho’s advertisement on YouTube stating ‘start your online retail business with zero investment’. Hesitant at first, as most of the users are owing to online frauds, she signed up and started selling a range of products like handbags, clothes, kitchen accessories on WhatsApp. The business earned her over 1 lakh in bonus, which surpassed her own weekly sales target.

This is the common communication tone that Meesho has built around its product since inception — ‘empowering people to fulfil their dream of becoming entrepreneurs’. This communication will continue to be the product differentiator and a strong USP for Meesho.

The founders mention that it is difficult for people to trust the whole online system, but they do trust their social community. This is exactly where Meesho comes in and builds its platform on an already built solid one. It consolidates the trust of their customers in the entrepreneurs who appear as influencers on the app.

There are close to 9 million such women entrepreneurs on the platform today and the number is likely to touch around 250 million by 2025.

Not only has Meesho been able to amass a huge user base over the years by targeting the right audience with its clean and simple proposition of ‘Zero Investment Business’ but also retained them with bonuses on extra sales and referral programs.

The company understood the fragmented digital knowledge among people and therefore kept the app simple. The user interface of Meesho is extremely simple and easy to use.

This is also combined with the necessary logistics support and payment tools. The delivery operations are managed directly by Meesho. Since most of the products are non-branded, the company lays heavy emphasis on quality.

Building a strong channel was a priority which was targeted in the initial days itself. Majority of the suppliers who sold their inventory through Meesho, relied on the company for the majority of their income. So in its initial phase, its entire focus was on setting up a minimal logistic network. This was quite a challenge as each state had different rules surrounding entry and exit of vehicles. Overcoming their hurdles and keeping the focus intact, Meesho has managed to build a robust marketplace for resellers and suppliers, wherein the app doesn’t communicate with the end consumers, their resellers do.

During these trying times, the thought of touching anything scares us, especially the ones that shift hands. The real struggle is for newspaper junkies, who cannot even sanitise the same. All the humour aside, what is the solution? The only way to calm those hyper newspaper reading nerves is to go online.

Digital age is booming and so is the digital news/content industry. Taking the notch up is aggregation and localisation and among all the players, Dailyhunt has managed to tap the same most efficiently.

Local language content has remained one of the most growing and underutilised opportunities in the Indian internet space. Half of the Indian population is online, making it one of the fastest growing internet markets globally. Adding to that, according to a report by KPMG and Google, 9 out of every 10 new internet users (between 2016 and 2021) used their local languages to access the same.

Bengaluru-based Dailyhunt entered the segment to fulfil this void in the Indian market. This news and content aggregator digital platform start-up has amassed a user base of over 150 Million today and has one of the most downloaded apps that publishes news, videos and content across 14 languages.

Keeping Up With ‘Trends’: Inception of Dailyhunt

Founder Virendra Gupta placed his bet on India’s diverse language base in 2007. He was no stranger to the world of management and Technology, bringing along with him his 20 years of rich experience.

Gupta started out with his first venture Verse Innovation Pvt Ltd (Parent company), a VAS (Value Added Services) start-up. The company provided SMS alerts on job, matrimony, property, education and others to subscribers across the country.
When a business is up and running and profitable, you always keep a foresight on its future in order to keep the ball rolling. VAS was on the verge of losing its sheen. This led to the decision of acquiring English and vernacular news aggregator Newshunt, which was created by ex-Nokia employees Umesh Kulkarni and Chandrashekhar Sohoni. Finally, Verse Innovation pivoted from being a VAS provider to a news and content aggregator. In 2015, it was renamed as Dailyhunt.

The whole industry of ‘localised content’ or anything local was at a very nascent stage, with everyone flip flopping over the idea. Gupta was always keen on new ideas that bridged the gap between technology and common man. He had envisioned providing content in different languages for people to take the digital route with convenience.

In 2018, he was joined by Umang Bedi, who brought his experience from tech giant Facebook and took over as the Dailyhunt’s co-founder and President.

The Early Entrant

70% of India is said to speak non-English language and that’s where Dailyhunt’s product finds its relevance. Understanding the ignored and untapped potential customer, something majority of the start-ups and giants hunt for today, Dailyhunt was the first one in the league to enter the regional content space.

The market environment also played its role as a catalyst for Dailyhunt’s success. The smartphones were getting cheaper and the app stores were taking off back then. Dailyhunt’s ascendance coincided with Android’s rise in India. This gave the company its golden push to capture the market and take an early lead. Not only they created the content which customers understood (news/information) but also what they enjoyed (short videos).

Dailyhunt’s platform provides three major types of content: news, e-books and magazines. The entire content is available in 14 different regional languages and can be accessed through the app or the website. Majority of it is sourced from over 3,000 providers, including some hyperlocal correspondents for news.

Talking about revenue, the major chunk comes from advertisement. It ties up with large news media and publishing houses for content on its platform and shares the advertising revenue on the news screens with them. Second is the revenue generated from e-books and magazines, which is shared with the publishers.

The platform to date has progressed from 2,000 content creators to 50,000, progressing towards personalised content.

A Multi-Faceted App

While it is important to cash on the opportunities with right moves, it is more important to have the foresight to understand the market sentiment and create an opportunity out of it.

The sound of ‘Made in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ echoed loud in the country, with local companies jumping on to the opportunity. Dailyhunt was not far behind. It already had a product at place which was created on those sentiments and the market environment further accentuated its popularity.

In September 2020, the company launched a short video making app — Josh — to fill the void created by Tik Tok, Likee, Vigo and other Chinese apps which were banned by the Indian government.

This latest addition to the platform is estimated to have around 85 Million monthly active users with over 1.5 Billion video playing daily. It has managed to stitch partnerships with 200 exclusive content creators on the platform. Local language support is one of the key attractions of this app which saw a massive growth in the first few days of its launch itself. This is especially applauding because Dailyhunt placed its bet on regional languages at the time when it was considered not so ‘glamorous’. The business was driven solely on the sheer demand for such products, with no frills attached.

Dailyhunt entered the Billion dollar club after raising a funding of over $100 Million led by Google, Microsoft and Falcon Edge’s Alpha Wave Incubation. Following the announcement, the company raised another over $100 Million as part of a Series H financing round from Qatar Investment Authority and Glade Brook Capital Partners. To date, the company had managed to secure $430 Million from various investors.
The latest round is to scale up Josh and double down on its Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) push. This brings us to the strong technology backing of the app, which has been devised intuitively, driven by AI, and is an outcome of deep machine learning.

Strong Technology at Play

It is pertinent to talk about the technology behind this app and overall Dailyhunt platform, which is one of the reasons behind its sustainable success and product differentiation.

Each language has its own script. One of the challenges Dailyhunt faced was interpreting the font of that particular language on mobile devices. The issue was tackled at an early stage itself. Besides, each language has its nuisance in terms of its correlation of multiple words with other languages. So when people work on data science and machine learning, sentences are broken into words and are correlated. This complexity was solved by the company through supervised and unsupervised data learning technology. In the former, the machine is trained allowing you to collect data or produce output from the previous experience while the unsupervised learning technique doesn’t need training or intervention. This is done because, if the reader doesn’t understand the context of each word, he can’t enjoy the essence or emotion of a content.

Using AI inputs like time, usage patterns, festivals, clusters and social signals, Dailyhunt is able to categorise content. The company claims to be only one in the field to have its own ad-tech online real-time auction bidding engine, besides Google and Facebook. The company’s system has been architected to run a huge data stake and user signals in real time, hence, enabling them to deliver data in real time.

This robust technology serves one single purpose – Creation of a strong digital media platform and an AI driven content discovery environment which will help consumers discover, consume and socialise with content.

These applications run with different USPs to gain a position in the market.

In the overall market, Google News, Flipboard, Inshorts and Dailyhunt top the list of leading news aggregation platforms. According to Apptopia, an intelligence provider app, Dailyhunt leads this space in categories of monthly active users (MAU), happy users and new users.

Following the footsteps of its peers Google News and Flipboard, Dailyhunt has forged partnerships with leading mobile manufacturers like Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo (become their default news app on selected devices) to reach a wider market.

On the other hand, its video-streaming app Josh faces competition from Instagram reels, Times internet’s MX Takatak, Sharechat’s Moj, Mitron and Bolo Indya.

This homegrown app, however, played the ‘Made in India’ card and took the early lead when the Chinese app was banned. The challenge, however, now lies in user retention. It has started to provide its users an opportunity to earn money by making short videos. The income generated is linked with a benchmarked number of likes and followers.

The growth potential of Dailyhunt is immense given its strong core vision of delivering engaging personalised local content. Users spent more time on the Dailyhunt app per month (average 120 minutes) than YouTube and Facebook (20 minutes).

DailyHunt focused on generating revenues through ads, the big share (almost 80%) of which is controlled by Google and Facebook. It explored to cater to a niche for itself by offering localised advertising solutions, especially making itself an attractive proposition for SMB’s who are in search to target remote areas and towns.

Born as Mark Elliot Zuckerberg in May 1984 in New York, Zuckerberg runs one of the most thriving global conglomerates and most valued companies in the world that is synonymous with success, vision, ideation, entrepreneurship, social media, and networking that has a market cap of 324.90 $ (April 30th).

If he has the same 24 hours a day that we all have and the same adult human brain that weighs around 3 pounds, what makes him so outstanding and so outperforming?

These are the questions many of us will well ask ourselves when we see him splashed across magazines, Television channels and discussed threadbare in B-Schools and in several entrepreneurship meets.

Surprisingly, this American computer programmer who dropped out of Harvard University after his sophomore year in 2004 spends only 50 to 60 hours a week at his office. However, the flip side is that he dedicates his full day to dwell and obsess over Facebook which is the mission of his life.

This 37-year-old tech CEO confesses to starting his day at 8:00 am by doom scrolling through Facebook, Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp to catch up with the rest of the world. So, if you were contemplating on a digital detox and telling yourself to meditate first thing in the morning – think again. Because Mark Zuckerberg does exactly this as soon as he wakes up.

This is where it all began…

In February 2004, when Zuckerberg was 19 years old, he launched the facebook.com (renamed Facebook in 2005), which was predominantly a directory in which fellow Harvard students entered their personal information and photos into a template that he had designed. And in no time, much of the student body had signed up. Zuckerberg’s roommates, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes helped him add features and make the site available to other campuses across the country.
Facebook experienced swift success as registered users could create profiles, upload photos and other media, and basically keep in touch with friends. It had a key differentiator which was the feature of building a database of real people and including friends of friends which was a major hit.

In 2005, Facebook received its first venture capital funding of $12.7 million and then one thing led to another and as they say the rest is history. And today Zuckerberg’s net worth is at: $119.4 billion. Over the years Facebook has been mired in controversies and criticisms that even questioned if Mark Zuckerberg was really meant to be a CEO, but with each hurdle the company and the leadership has emerged stronger and rides successful till today.

Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg’s growth story will always be the holy grail for entrepreneurs keen on making it big. So, given below is a roundup of select key themes from Zuckerberg’s personal and professional lives that we can emulate. It is a motley list of management tips, life lessons and conscious behavioural changes for individual development and professional advancement.

Create a clear and compelling vision

Mark Zuckerberg has one of the grandest visions that any entrepreneur could possibly have – Of Connecting the World. With a world population of 7.9 billion people, and with Facebook presently having 2.80 billion monthly active users is striding forward on achieving its mission which is why it can attract and retain some of the best talent. Talent that wants to be a part of this vision. With a clear-cut vision comes the ability to lead the team forward in the right direction. Every entrepreneur must have a complete vision of what he or she wants to accomplish, and this is fundamental to entrepreneurial success.

Give wings to goals with passion

Get completely immersed in your vision and allow it to consume and engulf you. It is not uncommon for Mark Zuckerberg to stay up late to programme while at Harvard nor for his company to conduct all night hackathons. Some of these nightly sojourns have given birth to the Facebook features that we casually use such as Chat and Friend Suggestions. While it is not about night and day, what is important is the fact that when you passionately obsess over your vision some of the best breakthroughs happen. Entrepreneurial success comes only when you give yourself completely to the vision and obsess over how you can achieve that vision that is burning within you.

“Ideas don’t come out fully formed. They only become clear as you work on them. You just have to get started”. Mark Zuckerberg.

Keep the customer in mind always

When businesses build and create products and services with the customer at the forefront, it is always a win. It is very easy to fall prey to your product and eventually stay in love with it and completely lose sight of what the customer wants. This is one of the most common failures of entrepreneurship when the founders end up spending time on convincing the customer that they need the same. Instead, if entrepreneurs pause and understand the customer mind and get under their skin to know what makes them tick and then marry it to the entrepreneurial vision, the outcome is easily saleable. Facebook works with the overarching theme of what customers want to share about themselves in a social platform which is the driving motto behind the backend of Facebook.

Build simple but effective products

Making a product that is simple, easy to use, and addresses the key concerns of a well-defined target group is key. That is what Facebook excelled at. It never over engineered anything beyond a point and struck at an optimum point. In an overzealous attempt to dazzle the customer, entrepreneurs often make the product so feature rich that becomes counterproductive. As entrepreneurs it would be worthwhile to learn how to build a simple and effective product that fascinates the customer but never overpowers them as that puts them off.

“I think a simple rule of business is, if you do the things that are easier first, then you can actually make a lot of progress.” Mark Zuckerberg

Start small but think big always

While it’s admirable to have a grand vision and passionately think about it always. Actions are what will take you closer to the goal. Interestingly Facebook, while having the vision of connecting the world, took it small initially opening Facebook up only for college students, who are reachable and available. Scaling up immediately after founding can be extremely dangerous, however starting small and gradually building as funds and support trickle in will be a wise move. Entrepreneurial success is largely dependent on the first few years of stability which is when the team, customers, and money start to trickle in.

“I’m here to build something for the long-term. Anything else is a distraction.” Mark Zuckerberg

Rejig your teams as you move the needle

One of the sharpest things to do as an entrepreneur would be to know what type of team members you need at each stage of the company’s growth. This was something Mark Zuckerberg did intuitively. He shrugged off some of the founding members to bring in new talent as the company scaled. Facebook’s hire of Sheryl Sandberg as its COO was a prudent one and was instrumental for the company’s phenomenal growth. So, knowing what team should be in place at what stage of the company is required of business leaders. Entrepreneurs must keep the growth of the organization at the epicentre and never be clouded by emotions.

This is one of the smartest and simplest things that any entrepreneur can do. When one invests energy in team members you have their wholehearted support without asking for it. Every entrepreneur while spending time in forming the team painstakingly must also invest a similar effort in keeping the channels of communication open with them. This gives them the enormous opportunity to know what excites the team members and cater to it accordingly which also helps the business well.

“Treat your employees right so they won’t use your internet to look for new jobs”. During the entrepreneurial journey one must traverse a lot. There are several junctures when you are at crossroads, when you encounter losses, failures, decisions backfiring, trolls and criticism. As an entrepreneur you will have to build the mental stamina to cut the clutter and shut out the naysayers and continue to believe in what you set out to do and never waver from it. This is something that Mark Zuckerberg has cultivated and uses the energy spent otherwise on negative emotions to fan his curiosity, creativity, and agility.

“You don’t let people deter you. Entrepreneurship begins with having good health and realizing that spending time on yourself is an investment of time and effort in your business as well.

“Health is certainly extremely important, and we’ve done a number of things at Facebook to help improve global health and work in that area, and I am excited to do more there, too. But the fact remains that for entrepreneurial success and stardom he continues to be an inspirational figure. And emerging entrepreneurs will benefit largely by looking at the multiple success factors of Facebook and of its famous founder. While the path to achieving business success is different for everyone, Zuckerberg’s journey can certainly act as the right reminder when you tend to question yourself when – overwhelmed by the entrepreneurial insurmountable risks.

It all began in the year starting 2000 – India’s internet exploded and everyone, including the big tech, came in to grab a piece of that pie. The global tech giants, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter and Google, provided India with powerful platforms to transact, seek and express information and consume entertainment while accelerating their own user base.

This honeymoon period, however, now seems to be fading for these companies. Something seems to have changed in the past few years. There is a common global sentiment – “Put a leash on big tech (social media platforms)”.

Countries have been seeking stronger regulations of social media platforms, some even banning them. Similar has been the case in India. Recently, the Indian government ordered Twitter and Facebook to take down 100 posts critical of its coronavirus handling. This comes two months after similar orders were passed to take down accounts and posts with negative narrative on farmers protests. In February 2021, the ministry came out with new rules and regulations for social media, which were criticised for being “anti-national and unconstitutional, suppressing freedom of speech”.

This brings us to an important question – Do regulations undermine the idealism of an open market in a country? The answer is no. Regulation is good. But the agenda behind it needs to be clear and not created to suit a particular narrative.

Tightening the Noose: What the Government Says?

While passing the recent orders to take down the 100 posts, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “We respect social media a lot, it has empowered common people. Social media has a big role in the Digital India Programme. However, if social media are misused to spread fake news and violence, then action will be taken on the misuse of social media in India whether Twitter or else.”

“There is freedom of speech but Article 19A says that this is subject to reasonable restrictions,” he said, adding that all the social media platforms will have to adhere to the Constitution of India which allows criticism of the government and the Prime Minister, but spreading fake news will not be allowed.

While the government came under criticism to create “unreasonable barriers” for big tech firms, the government itself counter questioned these firms by saying that they apply different parameters for different countries.

“Different parameters can’t be allowed for different countries. It can’t be different for the Capitol Hill incident and some other parameters for the Red Fort incident.”

If the content violates Twitter’s Rules, it is removed. If it is found to be illegal in a particular jurisdiction, but not in violation of the Twitter Rules, the company withholds access to the content in India only and the account holders are notified.

In today’s scenario, for a market to be open and ideal, regulations play an important role. As mentioned earlier, regulations are good, given the agenda and reasons behind them are clear. In India’s case, this is somewhat distorted. It’s a grey area when it comes to operating laws for social media platforms.

How can something that is freely expressed verbally in public or on other media platforms be “unlawful” for social media platforms. Moreover, is it the law of India or is it the law of the country where the parent company is based? Or, is it the ‘law’ as framed by the company, regardless of the law(s) of either the parent or the host country.

These unexplained questions dilute the idealism of an open market. “Selective” censor of tweets /posts /accounts /hashtags further undermine the transparency and purpose of the regulations. This is more hurtful for a country like India which is known for its vibrant democracy.

We can Chain them, but can we do without them?

An ideal open market is a long gone concept as “businesses” are at stake now. Governments across the global, including the US and Australia, are looking to regulate big tech firms but are also open to doing deals with them.

In some cases, big social media platforms and apps losing access to the Indian market may not be as big of an impact for the company than for the Indian government which relies heavily on them for global interactions and pushes forward its own messages and narrative. It goes both ways. Ideal or non-ideal, the business will continue as usual for nations.

Carnegie employed the best minds in business and combined the innovative process with the long-term goal of acquiring industry equipment in any market crisis.

Andrew Carnegie’s legacy – which is solid and moral – differs from his contemporaries. He pioneered philanthropy through his vast wealth and gave away most of his fortune to the cause while calling upon other wealthy moguls to do the same.

Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison was undoubtedly one of the most innovative creators and inventors of late 19th and early 20th centuries. Along with science, his business intelligence and entrepreneurial skills further enlarge his legacy as a pioneer of unmatchable entrepreneurship.

Edison was the inventor of what is now known as the research and development “R&D” technique. This is because Ford’s unique business model, the Ford Assembly Line, changed the automobile history. Henry Ford promoted the automotive industry for many years, and his company continues to supply great cars for the masses well into the 21st century.

Ford put his entrepreneurial skills to the fore and unleashed the power of mass production with his large factories that produced the first-ever car for the masses- the Ford Model T. Ford’s progressive labour policies and his constant drive to make each vehicle better, faster and cheaper made sure that the world would think of Ford when they shopped for a car.
