It’s not just the government, even start-ups and big tech giants are actively trying to help the small business fraternity. Amazon is a small business friendly platform where a seller located in any location in India can open their store and sell to customers across India. But due to the intense competition on platforms like Amazon, a lot of small businesses fail to show up on the first page of search results or make profitable sales. As a solution to this, Amazon organises the ‘Small Business Days’ event which took place towards the end of 2020 and has recently concluded for the year 2021. This event is in line with national efforts to provide a technological leg up to the thousands of small-scale entrepreneurs whose livelihoods have been wiped out due to the pandemic.

About the Amazon Small Business Day 2021

The Amazon Small Business Day 2021 took place between the 2nd and 4th July 2021. As the name rightly suggests, it was an exclusive event by Amazon India to support small businesses registered on their platform. By encouraging shoppers to make big purchases during these days, Amazon did its bit to boost sales and revenue for the local and small business community.

Why is Amazon hosting the Small Business Days event?

Amazon is doubling up on its efforts to help small businesses survive and revive post the second wave. As such, they hosted the ‘Small Business Days’ event for a duration of 3 days to generate business for the beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries of the event – Types of small businesses, their locations

Local and pan India small businesses were the prime beneficiaries of the event. Local entrepreneurs, homegrown sellers, manufacturers, start-ups, brands, women entrepreneurs, artisans, regional weavers, local stores were invited to list their products. Unique sellers like Indian craft makers were introduced during the event and given a platform to make a fresh start for their business.

The Numbers Game

A total of 84000 SMEs have benefitted from record sales during the 3-day period. The statistics are empowering for small town sellers since 68% of the orders received were from sellers who belonged to non-metro cities in India. A total of 7500 sellers who were participants of the event witnessed their highest single day sale in this year’s ‘Small Business Days’ by Amazon. This year, there was a 2.8X increase in their orders when compared to the SBD sale conducted by Amazon in December of 2020. A total of 1700 local shops who participated received at least one order during the event. The Karigar sellers who were part of the ‘Amazon Karigar’ initiative contributed 3400 new products to the catalogue. The women entrepreneurs who were part of the SBD’s ‘Amazon Saheli’ initiative added 8000 new products to the catalogue.

By participating in such annual sales hosted by e-commerce aggregators, you get the opportunity to showcase your unique collection of products. The exposure obtained from the sale days will be beneficial for businesses struggling to acquire customers. You can earn rewards since customers are actively shopping to avail big deals and special offers during these days.

The numbers are staggering, and small businesses can immensely benefit from Amazon’s reach. While this year’s sale has already concluded, keep an eye out for similar events by other well-known e-commerce aggregators. Support and resources are provided by aggregators to list profitably during sale days. For instance, you can manage your inventory, prepare fulfilment centres, organise digital marketing campaigns, and automate your pricing strategy through Amazon’s platform. Participating in e-commerce aggregator sales and events, especially focused on small businesses will be your first or most important step in digitally transforming your business.

Ordering groceries has become as easy as a tap on the phone, with plenty of options to choose from besides other services. But, behind this seamless – search, click, order, deliver – motion, lies a humongous supply chain, including producers, retailers, wholesalers, and so on.

Ever wondered how the grocery merchant you ordered a rice packet from got the same in the first place? Maybe s/he had a similar exclusive platform where s/he ordered it from?

Well, this brings us to the vast cycle of e-commerce processes for businesses and the introduction of B2B online food and grocery start-up, Jumbotail.

Jumbotail, a ‘data-centric and agile company in the B2B e-commerce domain’, gives thousands of Kiranas, producers, retailers and wholesalers a common platform to buy and sell products. Starting out small, the start-up today operates a full-stack e-commerce model consisting of its B2B marketplace platform, industry-leading warehousing infrastructure, last-mile delivery supply chain network, and a fintech platform for payment and credit solutions to Kirana store owners.

Bringing the Idea of Jumbotail Together

Like most start-ups, Jumbotail has had its fair share of ups and downs, especially given the fact that it operates in a traditional sector. It all goes back to 2008, when co-founder Mr. Karthik Venkateswaran, a former Major in the Indian Army and a marketplaces technology-product veteran, conceived the idea of aggregating coconut farming in Madurai. Though the ‘aggregation’ proposition was ahead of its time, it didn’t yield expected results.

On the other hand, co-founder Mr. Ashish Jhina, a third-generation apple farmer, continued with his management journey at Boston Consulting Group in New Delhi. The duo came together at Stanford University and discovered a shared interest in the Indian grocery and food supply chain, more towards its gaps and filling the same. They went on to pursue their respective paths, but the idea lingered at the back of their heads and was discussed on multiple occasions between the two.

Both Karthik and Ashish, primarily being from agricultural backgrounds, had first-hand experience with regard to the gaps in the food supply chain, including mismanaged distribution and procurement at Mandis. More prominent for them was the gap between retailers, wholesalers, and producers besides logistics, payments, and other challenges.

In 2015, the duo launched Jumbotail to fill this gap and bring the trio of retailers, wholesalers, and producers together on one single platform in order to streamline the process. Their respective combined backgrounds in agriculture and management played to their strength.

As a result, it faced challenges such as hesitancy and lack of trust from people to use the app. However, deriving inspiration from successful online business models of Amazon, eBay, etc., it gradually convinced people about the potential future of online marketplaces such as its booming landscape, revamped communication, its role during a disruption such as demonetization, and how Jumbotail stood as a collective alternative for all this.

Jumbotail realised the issues in having non-streamlined networks at the distributors (wholesalers) end who faced communication discrepancies and time constraints. Similarly, at the other end with Kirana stores, it figured out issues such as poorly structured procurement methods, resultant financial constraints, largely low educational qualifications, and tech and market awareness due to which it designed its marketplace (an app) in a simplistic user-friendly manner that effectively catered to all of this.

This app was also made compatible on low-end 2G/3G network phones and the company introduced fintech platforms to it that enabled transactions and provided access to working capital credit. Through this, Jumbotail was able to get its idea across people, overcome major obstacles and get thousands of customers aboard over the course of a few years.

Essentially, this happens through the app which drastically simplifies the traditionally prolonging task of retailers having to physically visit markets which would result in other issues such as financial loss due to temporary closure, warehousing, transportation, disputes, etc. This online platform opens up a whole new world to Kirana store owners by eliminating several constraints in the following ways.

Procurement and Transportation

What would initially require retailers to shut their stores for a day or two and result in unnecessary communication, transportation and time/financial loss is now available at the retailer’s fingertips wherein orders can be placed online. For instance, its ‘GoldenEye’ and multilingualism feature simplifies and educates Kirana store owners regarding market trends, purchase patterns, product margins, stocks, etc, without them having to spend much time researching and that too in their preferred languages. Besides, Jumbotail offers to install data packs into customers’ devices and add the same in their invoice post-transaction.

Collectively, through this, Jumbotail aims to re-engineer the Indian grocery ecosystem by providing fair access to markets and increased economic opportunities for millions of ‘mom and pop’ grocery retailers, brands, and staples producers and farmers.

The company runs on a B2B business model with a large chunk of revenue coming from commission collected from sellers (particularly wholesalers) who list their products on the app along with supply chain services such as warehousing and door-to-door delivery for retailers among other generic aggregator services. The company also earns from digital product placement, digital merchandising and in some cases, sampling.

Coming to funding, Jumbotail raised around $2 million in its seed funding; even before its incorporation, which convinced future investors of its ability to build the business. Credits for this growth spree go to its timely tapping in of the right market (Kiranas), its conviction of the future of 4G internet and its ability to visualize a combined future of both as an economic powerhouse of India which was proof enough for its first investor – Nexus Venture Partners.

Post this, the company has witnessed a manifold increase in interest by investors from around the world. The latest being in the third round of its Series B wherein it met its targeted $25 million single round investment by gaining a whopping $14.2 led by VII ventures.

Prior to this, it raised around $11 million in the second round of Series B the previous year along with its other stages, therefore, summing up its total funding to around $54 million. Overall, the company aims to utilise this capital to scale its business to new regions and double down its network along with launching a suite of services to help FMCG brands go to the market exponentially faster and at a low cost.

Jumbotail: Competitors and Meeting the Challenges

Jumbotail initially faced competition from big start-ups like Grofers, Big Basket, etc. Some of these brands have also had to reinvent themselves due to outrage around their business models. For instance, Grofers, which went from a logistics company that delivered groceries from Kiranas to consumers eventually ended up building its own inventory and eliminating Kiranas due to increasing demand. This, despite “simplifying” supply chains, ended up having severe consequences on Kirana stores.

Jumbotail instead operates a full-stack tech-driven supply chain to provide warehousing facilities for its wholesalers and simplifies logistics by its storefront delivery system, which helps enhance small scale business operations. Thus, committing itself to the preservation and improvisation of Kiranas, it leaves little room for their elimination.

Of late, Jumbotail has developed stronger competition in the likes of Ninjacart, Waycool, Udaan, etc. with Ninjacart being the fiercest, boasting funding of over $200 million (4 times that of Jumbotail) and a steep difference in workforce of around 2000 employees. Despite this, Jumbotail is seeing profits and seeks to ramp up its operations in several parts of the country outside its Bangalore headquarters to boost ahead of competitors in the long run. At the end of the day the main challenge comes down to staying afloat in such a saturated market while still looking out for everyone in the supply chain.

The ‘X’ factor: What Made Jumbotail Stand out?

The start-up has managed to adapt to various different scenarios of the grocery-agriculture industry and cater to some of the major demands of Kirana stores’ even during times of major inconvenience. For instance, the ongoing pandemic where they could boast about being one of the only companies in their sector to have profitably functioned during some of its most stringent months. Thanks to its ‘J24’ programme which connects Kirana stores to its own hi-tech streamlined supply chain network, it stood as an exclusive alternative for traditional offline players that were highly disrupted during the lockdown crisis.

Another distinguishing factor is Jumbotail’s understanding and analysis of mistakes of those who have directly jumped the gun of profit, without genuine consideration of their brand’s actual motive. This gives Jumbotail an edge over its competitors who have faced the wrath of accusations of “wiping away” small scale stores and farmers.

The company also aims to increase its pre-existing omnichannel integrations by adding several more hyperlocal platforms. All of this, with the help of its $14.2 million raised in its Series B3 funding earlier this year.

So how far will the company go? What does the future hold for Jumbotail? Only time will tell. At the moment, it looks bright and they certainly seem to have stuck to their tagline. Their ultimate goal to streamline and rebuild India’s supply chain along with garnering the retailer’s trust only seems to be moving upwards. Therefore, they certainly have made their mark by overcoming obstacles and turning challenges into opportunities.

For more inspiring stories like this, read our Inspire Section!

During these trying times, the thought of touching anything scares us, especially the ones that shift hands. The real struggle is for newspaper junkies, who cannot even sanitise the same. All the humour aside, what is the solution? The only way to calm those hyper newspaper reading nerves is to go online.

Digital age is booming and so is the digital news/content industry. Taking the notch up is aggregation and localisation and among all the players, Dailyhunt has managed to tap the same most efficiently.

Local language content has remained one of the most growing and underutilised opportunities in the Indian internet space. Half of the Indian population is online, making it one of the fastest growing internet markets globally. Adding to that, according to a report by KPMG and Google, 9 out of every 10 new internet users (between 2016 and 2021) used their local languages to access the same.

Bengaluru-based Dailyhunt entered the segment to fulfil this void in the Indian market. This news and content aggregator digital platform start-up has amassed a user base of over 150 Million today and has one of the most downloaded apps that publishes news, videos and content across 14 languages.

Keeping Up With ‘Trends’: Inception of Dailyhunt

Founder Virendra Gupta placed his bet on India’s diverse language base in 2007. He was no stranger to the world of management and Technology, bringing along with him his 20 years of rich experience.

Gupta started out with his first venture Verse Innovation Pvt Ltd (Parent company), a VAS (Value Added Services) start-up. The company provided SMS alerts on job, matrimony, property, education and others to subscribers across the country.
When a business is up and running and profitable, you always keep a foresight on its future in order to keep the ball rolling. VAS was on the verge of losing its sheen. This led to the decision of acquiring English and vernacular news aggregator Newshunt, which was created by ex-Nokia employees Umesh Kulkarni and Chandrashekhar Sohoni. Finally, Verse Innovation pivoted from being a VAS provider to a news and content aggregator. In 2015, it was renamed as Dailyhunt.

The whole industry of ‘localised content’ or anything local was at a very nascent stage, with everyone flip flopping over the idea. Gupta was always keen on new ideas that bridged the gap between technology and common man. He had envisioned providing content in different languages for people to take the digital route with convenience.

In 2018, he was joined by Umang Bedi, who brought his experience from tech giant Facebook and took over as the Dailyhunt’s co-founder and President.

The Early Entrant

70% of India is said to speak non-English language and that’s where Dailyhunt’s product finds its relevance. Understanding the ignored and untapped potential customer, something majority of the start-ups and giants hunt for today, Dailyhunt was the first one in the league to enter the regional content space.

The market environment also played its role as a catalyst for Dailyhunt’s success. The smartphones were getting cheaper and the app stores were taking off back then. Dailyhunt’s ascendance coincided with Android’s rise in India. This gave the company its golden push to capture the market and take an early lead. Not only they created the content which customers understood (news/information) but also what they enjoyed (short videos).

Dailyhunt’s platform provides three major types of content: news, e-books and magazines. The entire content is available in 14 different regional languages and can be accessed through the app or the website. Majority of it is sourced from over 3,000 providers, including some hyperlocal correspondents for news.

Talking about revenue, the major chunk comes from advertisement. It ties up with large news media and publishing houses for content on its platform and shares the advertising revenue on the news screens with them. Second is the revenue generated from e-books and magazines, which is shared with the publishers.

The platform to date has progressed from 2,000 content creators to 50,000, progressing towards personalised content.

A Multi-Faceted App

While it is important to cash on the opportunities with right moves, it is more important to have the foresight to understand the market sentiment and create an opportunity out of it.

The sound of ‘Made in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ echoed loud in the country, with local companies jumping on to the opportunity. Dailyhunt was not far behind. It already had a product at place which was created on those sentiments and the market environment further accentuated its popularity.

In September 2020, the company launched a short video making app — Josh — to fill the void created by Tik Tok, Likee, Vigo and other Chinese apps which were banned by the Indian government.

This latest addition to the platform is estimated to have around 85 Million monthly active users with over 1.5 Billion video playing daily. It has managed to stitch partnerships with 200 exclusive content creators on the platform. Local language support is one of the key attractions of this app which saw a massive growth in the first few days of its launch itself. This is especially applauding because Dailyhunt placed its bet on regional languages at the time when it was considered not so ‘glamorous’. The business was driven solely on the sheer demand for such products, with no frills attached.

Dailyhunt entered the Billion dollar club after raising a funding of over $100 Million led by Google, Microsoft and Falcon Edge’s Alpha Wave Incubation. Following the announcement, the company raised another over $100 Million as part of a Series H financing round from Qatar Investment Authority and Glade Brook Capital Partners. To date, the company had managed to secure $430 Million from various investors.
The latest round is to scale up Josh and double down on its Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) push. This brings us to the strong technology backing of the app, which has been devised intuitively, driven by AI, and is an outcome of deep machine learning.

Strong Technology at Play

It is pertinent to talk about the technology behind this app and overall Dailyhunt platform, which is one of the reasons behind its sustainable success and product differentiation.

Each language has its own script. One of the challenges Dailyhunt faced was interpreting the font of that particular language on mobile devices. The issue was tackled at an early stage itself. Besides, each language has its nuisance in terms of its correlation of multiple words with other languages. So when people work on data science and machine learning, sentences are broken into words and are correlated. This complexity was solved by the company through supervised and unsupervised data learning technology. In the former, the machine is trained allowing you to collect data or produce output from the previous experience while the unsupervised learning technique doesn’t need training or intervention. This is done because, if the reader doesn’t understand the context of each word, he can’t enjoy the essence or emotion of a content.

Using AI inputs like time, usage patterns, festivals, clusters and social signals, Dailyhunt is able to categorise content. The company claims to be only one in the field to have its own ad-tech online real-time auction bidding engine, besides Google and Facebook. The company’s system has been architected to run a huge data stake and user signals in real time, hence, enabling them to deliver data in real time.

This robust technology serves one single purpose – Creation of a strong digital media platform and an AI driven content discovery environment which will help consumers discover, consume and socialise with content.

According to Apptopia, an intelligence provider app, Dailyhunt leads this space in categories of monthly active users (MAU), happy users and new users.

Following the footsteps of its peers Google News and Flipboard, Dailyhunt has forged partnerships with leading mobile manufacturers like Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo (become their default news app on selected devices) to reach a wider market.

On the other hand, its video-streaming app Josh faces competition from Instagram reels, Times internet’s MX Takatak, Sharechat’s Moj, Mitron and Bolo Indya.

This homegrown app, however, played the ‘Made in India’ card and took the early lead when the Chinese app was banned. The challenge, however, now lies in user retention. It has started to provide its users an opportunity to earn money by making short videos. Users spent more time on the Dailyhunt app per month (average 120 minutes) than YouTube and Facebook (20 minutes).

DailyHunt focused on generating revenues through ads, the big share (almost 80%) of which is controlled by Google and Facebook. It explored to cater to a niche for itself by offering localised advertising solutions, especially making itself an attractive proposition for SMB’s who are in search to target remote areas and towns.

The company was able to establish an effective ad network with its data driven delivery of content in its newsfeed. It started moving towards being less social-driven to interest-driven.

The difference? Those who populate content based on your social network (friends and connections) are social driven networks while the ones that populate content based on your interests (stand-up comedy, sports etc) are interest-driven.

Dailyhunt is moving on similar lines and heating up the competition. The company created a vernacular newsfeed, built an interest-driven network for ad-making use of the local knowhow that it has created and embedded in its product for a decade.

With advertisers looking beyond global platforms to reach vernacular users, Dailyhunt is pacing up to build a localised newsfeed for India to challenge Facebook.

The company’s next move is to triple the user base, double the time spent on the app and release five times more content to be monetised through video advertising.

What is Zomato and How Does it Work?

Nowadays we know Zomato as one of Indian’s most popular online food delivery start-ups. It is one of the largest digital platforms for all things restaurant and food-related, but this was not always the case. In its infancy, Zomato was just a simple online portal that acted as a catalogue of menu cards from various restaurants and was launched under the name ‘Foodiebay’.

The founders, Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah, launched Foodiebay in an attempt to make restaurant-goers’ lives easier by cutting away the long queues people had to wait in. Sometimes, it was just to take a glance at the menu to decide if they wanted to or could afford to eat there. The solution of cataloguing and giving potential customers easy access to the restaurant’s food items proved a massive time-saver, which greatly improved the traffic to their website. This led to a rapid expansion of the brand and the online platform and thus, Zomato was born.

Now, in the present context, when most of us think of Zomato on the surface, we think of the food delivery app, which is akin to the likes of Swiggy that gets food to you from the restaurant. However, food delivery is not the core of this start-up. Primarily, Zomato is a restaurant aggregator, and its main product or wing is the website that acts as a convergence point where users can find everything they need to know about a restaurant when they go on the hunt for a night out. Menu pricings, offers, table bookings, branch locations and even customer reviews can be found on its online portal.

The core goal of this brand is to give customers a holistic overview of the eateries that they are going to spend their well-earned money in. It is a one-stop-shop if you will. Having said that, Zomato does also have food delivery options that are provided from the restaurants that they partner with and is facilitated through the streamlined ‘Zomato Food Delivery’ app.

Since its inception in 2008, the brand and the platform as a whole have seen tremendous growth and is currently present in 24 countries and more than 10,000 cities globally. It officially became an entrant into the unicorn club in February of 2018 when it raised $200 Million in funding which brought the brand valuation up to $1.1 Billion. In the span of just three years the brand valuation has shot up through the roof and as of 2021 it was valued at $ 5.4 Billion.

The surge in its growth was due in part to the core platform function of aggregating restaurants on its website as well as the diversification into the online food delivery space in 2015 with the mobile app.

Zomato’s Platforms and Initiatives: The Reasons Behind Its Success

The Website

As mentioned before, this was Zomato’s first and core iteration as it ventured into the online food industry. The website portal is an online restaurant directory/listing platform that connects users with all the restaurants in their city or immediate vicinity and cuts the information intake time in half. The site gives people a wide variety of information about what kind of restaurants there are, the food choices, menu pricing, and relative locations. It also acts as a booking platform through which customers can easily book a table well in advance with partnered restaurants.

The site also helps filter out restaurants as per different preferential categories like price point, style of cuisine, customer ratings, dietary needs and hygiene factors. The website as a product or mechanism for the brand is a two-pronged strategy from an entrepreneurial and business standpoint. The plan starts with streamlining the user experience, which drives heavy traffic for the brand and enables it to spread its reach. Simultaneously, as a result of this heavy traffic, the website is the perfect platform for hosting advertorials and offers that restaurants wish to reach their customers with. Zomato uses this to their advantage by featuring ads for restaurants and charges them a commission for it. This brings a lot of visibility for the restaurants in question and revenue for Zomato. It is a win-win strategy and that is why the website is at the core of the brand’s market penetration, acting as a cornerstone for all its other branch-off ventures.

Zomato Food Delivery App

The App, which was launched in January of 2011, served as a strong supporting wing to the business and is second only to the primary website. The basic function of it is similar to Swiggy. It takes food orders from customers on behalf of its partner restaurants and delivers to them via its own fleet of Zomato delivery personnel. Though the fleet is relatively new following the success that newcomer Swiggy had seen using its own fleet instead of using third-party delivery services which Zomato was initially doing.

The app offers a variety of different features that streamline the user experience and has many similar features to the website. Centred around convenience, the app allows customers to order food online from partner restaurants in over 500 cities across India. Additionally, you can also track your order’s status in real-time, avail offers and discounts that a particular restaurant has, book tables, look up restaurant details (reviews, photos, ratings, menus, etc.) and filter your restaurant search with the filter option on the app which mirrors the website.

Interestingly, where apps like Swiggy just get the food to you, Zomato has an added option of letting customers place orders, which they can then go pick up for the full takeaway tradition.

The features of the app aside, it was a smart business branch-off that contributes to the business’s revenue stream. By bridging the gap in the online food ordering industry that exists in India, the brand brings convenience and efficiency to the table, which drives up customer engagement and makes it such a popular platform. As a result of the rise in popularity, and the visibility and traffic these restaurants get from the delivery app, Zomato can charge a delivery fee, which is split between the company and the drivers.

Zomato Gold

This wing of Zomato’s revenue-building scheme is a subscription platform where users and customers can access exclusive deals at restaurants and pubs that are under the Zomato banner. In this, there are two broad categories, one for nightlife and one for dine-out customers. In the dining, segment members receive complimentary dishes from the menus of partnered restaurants and get deep discounts. In the nightlife segment, customers get complimentary drinks from the menus.

The gold membership platform acts as a heavy revenue generator as well as a loyalty-building scheme. The deep discounts and complimentary menu items ensure higher user loyalty for the platform, more footfall for partnered restaurants. Consequently, the subscription fee paid by users and the registration fees that restaurants pay to Zomato to be featured pulls in a steady stream of revenue and brand popularity for the platform.

All in all, the multi-pronged approach of streamlining the user experience and cross-promoting partnered restaurants have served Zomato well in becoming not only a viable business model but one of India’s most popular and fastest-growing start-ups to date. More than just being a series of apps and online portals, Zomato has turned its product line into a symbiotic business builder and the foundation upon which it stands today.

With the apps and platforms doing the heavy lifting in building up the brand value and driving customer engagement, Zomato also has a series of initiatives that further bolster the venture of this rapidly expanding start-up. Let us take a look at them and how they contribute to the overall growth.

Hyperpure

Where most of the previously illustrated initiatives were geared towards bringing customers and restaurants together, the Hyperpure venture is specifically designed for the restaurants that Zomato partners with. After all, they are their customers too in a way. Hyperpure is a B2B foodtech vertical that helps restaurants source fresh, hygienic and high-quality ingredients such as meat, produce, beverages, seafood items and so on.

It connects these restaurants directly with farmers, mills, producers and processors across the country to create an effective logistics network. This ensures that eateries can stock their kitchens with quality ingredients in a consistent fashion. It also serves the dual purpose of putting sources such as farmers and producers into business thus providing much-needed income. This approach not only diversifies Zomato’s value chain but also adds value to the brand name itself within the industry circles as a go-to brand to be partnered with, thus increasing the reach.

Zomaland

Counter-balancing the digital-forward presence of Zomato, Zomaland is the physical manifestation of the brand which acts as a food and entertainment carnival. The best eateries, musicians, comedians and games come together under the banner to display the vast connection and network that Zomato maintains in a single location.

Yes, people want convenience but as times like the 2020 lockdown have proven, people also want to have fun and celebrate in the real world. This venture takes the food connection and brings it into the real world, which creates a lot of clout for the brand and footfall for the restaurants that take part in it. Launched in 2018 as a flagship event it saw over 100,000 visitors in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru alone. It has since been hosted in multiple cities and even been registered with the Singapore Tourism Board. Beyond being a fun event to build a brand name, it serves the purpose of widening Zomato’s business network. For a start-up that is a very valuable thing to have.

Zomato Kitchens

Zomato took things a step further and took to the start-up industry by providing kitchen infrastructure to entrepreneurs looking to open their own restaurants by funding them and setting them up in the right locations under the brand banner.

It is one thing to be a start-up, it is another thing entirely to help start-ups while your business is also in the start-up category (albeit a well-established one). This showcases the level of integration and vast network that Zomato has access to as well as the level to which the business scaled up. This venture essentially contributed towards building brand loyalty from the industry side.

All in all, it is quite evident that the reason for the overall success of Zomato is due to the wide array of products that line its market strategy and bolster its foundations. The combination of maintaining a strong core operation in the form of their website and having multiple apps and initiatives playing a crucial supportive role has ensured its place at the top of the mountain of start-up unicorns.

Now, while Swiggy does hold the lead in the delivery segment through the app as its core function, Zomato stands as a heavy-hitter in the restaurant directory and cataloguing arena. So, at the end of the day, yes, there is heavy competition, but it becomes less about who is the best and more about who offers the best service in a particular area.

Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah started Zomato with the aim of cutting down the time spent lining up at restaurants by customers, and yet, has grown into an industry titan that inspires brand loyalty from both customers and partnered businesses. This has been the case in the Indian food delivery scene for many years, at least until August of 2014 when Swiggy came onto the scene and turned the tables by revolutionising the food delivery industry.

Swiggy: How It Began

Swiggy is many things but at its core, it is a hyper-local food delivery app that has streamlined the ordering and delivery process beyond anyone’s wildest expectations and it is every entrepreneur’s dream. Swiggy is the brainchild of Sriharsha Majety, Nandan Reddy and Rahul Jaimini and had its roots put down in Bengaluru’s neighbourhood Koramangala, in August of 2014.

Swiggy stood out from day one of its inception into the market, a market which at that point was already quite saturated. It should be noted that players like Zomato were already active and thriving when Swiggy was just starting out, but they all fell to the back of the crowd because did not seize the opportunity. In the years preceding Swiggy, the online food-delivery scene was not a very attractive prospect for many of the big players as it was quite a fragmented beast to tame. This pushed the likes of Zomato to look elsewhere for its expansion, a decision that it would come to regret.

Going against the grain, Swiggy proved otherwise and its expansion exploded in about four years, making it India’s fastest-growing platforms and earning it the coveted ‘unicorn’ title. In late June of 2018, with a total valuation of $ 1.3 Billion, Swiggy had officially entered the unicorn club. Just to put how extraordinary that is into perspective, it took Flipkart, which was previously considered as India’s largest and fastest-growing start-up around six years to do what this food delivery app did in just four.

What Makes Swiggy Stand Out as a Product

Much of Swiggy’s success can be boiled down to its approach and format. In a market so over-crowded with industry giants that have had years to set up a business network, the only way to stand out was to execute a maverick move, which Swiggy did in the form of its app. It is a well-known fact that a business that controls the value chain in a market, has greater control over the market itself, hence the entire premise of the app was based around building up and reinforcing an excellent logistics operation.

Building a logistics network is a tedious and time-consuming task that does not yield much customer retention out the gate, which is why most start-ups tend to shift focus to first getting their name out into the market sphere through apps, marketing and outreach activities. Swiggy proved that while this was a big task for a start-up to undertake in its formative years, it was a worthwhile one.

Thanks to this approach, the very concept of the app and how it functioned served as the foundation for the brand’s success. Yes, brands like Zomato, TinyOwl and Foodpanda performed a similar function of connecting customers to their restaurants of choice but in doing so, they completely neglected the delivery aspect of it and left that task to other third-party delivery services or the restaurants themselves. Needless to say, this left the delivery and customer-care end of things lacking in timely deliveries, quality of service and severely limited the restaurant’s ability to live up to the demand as a restaurant can only do so much delivery when the primary focus is on their in-house customers.

The Swiggy app on the other hand completely cuts out all the middle-persons and keeps its sole focus on connecting hungry customers with their food orders. Operating on a hyper-local food delivery system, Swiggy has a vast network of delivery personnel whose primary goal is to get the food to the customers in 30 to 40 minutes. Keep in mind that this was at a time when online delivery as a concept was not too popular with restaurants and much of the competition as well. The reason why Swiggy was able to rise above the doubt was thanks to investors who saw its potential, coupled with a strong combination of a solid logistics network and a streamlined technology backboard to support the vast delivery network.

The App, the Features, the Success

Like many online platforms today, Swiggy does have a website where it features updates, policies, and a well-maintained customer-care line to reach them through, but it is the mobile app that is the star of the show. So, without further delay here are the features of the app and why that makes Swiggy king of its domain:

The Delivery Fleet

Since Swiggy has its own fleet of delivery persons, it does not have to rely on the restaurants to undertake that task and at this point, it becomes more than just a connecting or ordering platform, it becomes a service. Each member of the Swiggy fleet who is registered under the app can be contacted and tracked through the app’s simple interface making the process that much easier.

While Zomato, Swiggy’s biggest competitor to date, also has a fleet of delivery personnel, it is nowhere close to Swiggy on that front as the brand primarily caters to connecting people to restaurants and handles bookings and reviews on behalf of the customers. This makes the delivery business a secondary priority, and to succeed or overtake a market, the sole focus should be on a single purpose, which is why Swiggy excels with the delivery service.

No More Minimum Order

The dreaded ‘minimum order policy’ which states that a minimum value of food needs to be ordered from the restaurant to have it delivered, a concept removed by Swiggy. Since the Swiggy app cuts out the middle-men and has its own fleet, there is no minimum order policy. Instead, Swiggy takes out a commission from the restaurant and a minimal fee for the delivery charges, letting customers order as much or as little as they wish to. This is a key factor in why the app has such high customer satisfaction and retention rate.

Speed Is Everything

Swiggy maintains a delivery target time of roughly 30 to 40 minutes, which can be further tracked through the app in real-time. This time is also segmented into portions of when the order is placed when the delivery personnel arrive at the restaurant and the time taken to the customer’s doorstep. This greatly improves customer oversight and keeps the process compartmentalised and streamlined. Swiggy has thus far brought the average delivery time down to 37 minutes, which has proven quite essential to maintaining customer satisfaction levels.

To put this into the perspective of why it is so important to the success of the app and the brand as a whole, take Domino’s Pizza, for example, a pizza chain that renowned for their 30-minute delivery policy. A successful model for the simple reason that hungry customers want food fast, achieving that inspired brand loyalty and higher customer retention.

Going the Distance

Another reason why the engagement on the app is so high is variety. Yes, other delivery apps are catching up to that and have a wide variety of restaurant options as well, but Swiggy has wider coverage. The app enables customers to order from beyond just their immediate vicinity. This aspect of the app speaks to the sheer level of convenience and comfort brought to the customer base as users can try a wider selection of foods in their respective areas.

The Swiggy Wallet and Price Points

The Wallet option lends itself to quick and easy payments through the app and further extends the engagement of the platform as wallet users can access special coupons and offers that would otherwise not be accessible. This funnels in customers to invest more into the core functionalities of the platform and drives the brand engagement as well.

Most of the offers can be availed through partner banks and payment gateways which are streamlined through the app making the singular point of access all the more convenient.

Swiggy took it a step further and offered users a ‘pocket-friendly’ option that lists all restaurants options that fit into the budget category. A smart move on the brand’s part as it prevents alienating the segment of customers who also want to order in but have a budgetary restriction. A strategy that greatly increases the scope of brand expansion and drives app engagement in every customer segment.

Swiggy Genie

The Swiggy Genie feature lets customers get things picked up and dropped off anything outside the scope of food. This includes sending gifts to people, ordering medicines and even groceries from the local supermarket. Given that the platform has such a strong core functionality it allows Swiggy to branch off into such diverse ventures which play in favour of brand expansion and drives the engagement up more for the business through the app as people will have more use for it beyond just food.

Speaking of diversification, the app also has a ‘Meat and Fish’ feature which delivers fresh meat products to customers from reliable, partnered vendors in the city. Ideal for those of us who are looking to make a fancy home-cooked meal or want to skip the hassle of the meat market early in the morning.

Street Vendors and Covid Safety

The only way to survive in the aftermath of the pandemic was to adapt, and adapt it did. Swiggy’s now-infamous no contact delivery system, which is now being used throughout the industry as a catch-all, was that solution. Though sanitary safety measures are commonplace now, Swiggy hit the mark early as it partnered with restaurants during the peak pandemic months to meet the sanitary requirements. This drove up brand loyalty and app engagement as people relied heavily on this type of delivery given that everyone was stuck at home and had been itching to try something other than home-cooked food.

Seeing this trend Swiggy also rightly seized the opportunity to bridge a major pain point in the market, which were the street vendors. In early December of 2010 Swiggy announced the launch of the ‘Street Food Vendor’ Program that would benefit around 36,000 people in 125 tier 2 and tier 3 cities in the first phase of the launch.

The venture was in partnership with the ‘Prime Minister Street Vendor’s AtmaNibhar Nidhi’ (PM SVANidhi) scheme that ensured all vendors are registered with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) receive a Food Safety Training and Certification (FOSTAC) in partnership with FSSAI. This bridged a major gap in the market left by the pandemic as street vendors make up a large portion of the market and were hit the hardest by the lockdown. A great strategy that helped Swiggy expand its reach into a market hardly touched by much of the competition.

Given how much they have diversified over such a short period and still managed to rise to success despite the pandemic, it speaks volumes about the smart entrepreneurial decisions made by the founders.

Having said that, at the core of why the app was so successful as a product and platform was due to a customer-first approach and speedy service that stood as the cornerstone upon which every variant and branch-off of the platform was built. Essentially, the reason they were able to overtake the market out of the blue was because they dared to not follow the crowd and they did not alienate any segment of the market or customer base; there was something for everyone. To think that all this started because Sriharsha Majety and Nandan Reddy wanted to make life easier for the Indian restaurant-goer with a tap of a button.

For more inspiring stories like this visit our Inspire Section.
